May 01, 2009 -- Can you steal a deal buying a Chrysler now?

With the news of Chrysler's bankruptcy, Clark is already getting people wondering if now is the time to steal a deal on one of their cars.

The short answer is no.

First, Consumer Reports says that Chrysler's passenger cars are not reliable. The consumer champ concurs with those findings based on his own experience as a frequent car renter.

Second, even if you think Clark is being unnecessarily hard on the failed automaker and still want a Chrysler, it's not time to buy quite yet.

There will be opportunity to buy at good prices once Chrysler renounces ties with many of its dealerships as part of a restructuring effort. That's when you can swoop in and pick up the wounded ducks. Clark expects that to be later this year, probably in the summer.

And if you still think he's being unfair to Chrysler, the penny-pincher encourages you to rent one and see if you don't agree with the assessment from Consumer Reports!

In related auto industry news, Ford outsold Toyota in April for the first time in a year. Sounds like Toyota believed all the hype about how great they were and started overproducing vehicles, building too many factories and crafting gas guzzlers at the worst possible time.

The car market can change on a dime!

What others are saying

  • Go for americans
I have a ford scord 97 LX and it Is the best car I had so far, they are really good and RELIABLE. I have also a nissan armada 07 and is just problem after problem, specialy the braks I guess not all american car are bad after all. I´m guessing my next car is gonna be a ford!!!!!!
  • buy american
of the last 6 new vehicles I have bought, 5 were gm and one a toyota (assembled in the u.s.).

life is just not fair. just ask former enron employees about their pension benefits.

the truth is, the sooner the big three clean house the sooner they can get back to the business of building cars for sale at a profitable price.

I doubt toyota, hyundai or any of the other foreign nameplates want a restructuring of the big three. After all, they love having a huge cost advantage. think about that and maybe that might change your mind. Don't you think these foreign manufacturers just love all the uncertainty and such in detroit? of course they do!!!
  • take away my benefits
Of course I would not like to have something taken away from me that I was promised. You miss the point though.

the point is that incompetetent management intrested in short term results and union leadership only interested in furthering their power are the real culprits here.

these retirement benefits were a totally unfunded benefit doled out at a time when detroit had zero competition at home. this should have been addressed 20 years ago...and both the unions (who are supposed to be looking out for their workers) and management should have demanded it. and the union leadership should have told their workers the truth of what would inevitably happen if they did not adjust for competitive forces.

Now you see where we are.

Unless you expect the american taxpayer to pay for these retirees benefits, who do you think will? these benefits will all go away in their entirety upon bankruptcy.

Mark my word, the big three are all on a death spiral that will only stop with bankruptcy and a total rework of wages, benefits and retiree benefits.
  • Buying Chrysler , GM, Ford Products
If you rent any manufactures product, more than likely it is a base design vehicle. Can you rent a Chrysler 300 C, or a Chevy LTZ Tahoe, Ford Truck King Ranch. Not where I live.
Go to a Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge store and take a RT Charger or Challenger, Limited Grand Cherokee, or the NEW Hemi Ram. How about stepping up and drive any of the SRT vehicles. Go to a Chevy store and drive a LTZ Tahoe.
Point is, you get what you pay for.
Do yourself a favor and go to Chrysler, or a GM dealership, or Ford and drive what you deserve to drive and do not settle and short change yourself.
Buy from the original Big 3 and support us.
Just like everything else right now and not just speaking for the Automotive industry, GREED is what started this mess. And Common Sense will revive us
    God Bless America
  • I LIKE MINE
I am very pleased with our Chrylser Sebring GTC.
We purchased it used with a loan from a credit union.
I hope clark can post some more info about all the car makers and the money they have gotten!
    Keep up the great work.
  • Vast improvements
I've owned nothing but Dodge Rams the last 30 years. 7 of them. The first was a 1978, I can say that the ones they have made since 1998 is vastly improved in everyway! I love my full sized Ram 4x4. The quality on the old ones were bad. But don't try to tell me they still are, because they are not. I work them hard every day here on the farm, and there every bit as good as a Ford or Chevy, or anything else for that matter. They are a part of the Chrysler famiy, so don't condemm them all. I have rented Chrysler cars, and found them to be just as good as anything else.
  • Chrysler reliability
Bought 1992 Plymouth Gr.Voyager new. Have now 221,000 miles and van is strong and reliable. Secret? Regular maintenance and good/excellent local repair shop. Intend to drive for next 5 years or so.
  • ...
So does this mean Dodge is going under with chrysler? are they still tied to Daimler the german car company? My wife owns a PT cruiser and it is an ok car, but i agree most chrysler products are crap...Dodge and Jeep are the winning brands and include Ram and Challenger (they are Dodge, not Chrysler) will they still be there if Chrysler gets sold to Fiat?
  • chrysler reliability
My Ex wife had a Dodge Dynasty, and I got so fed up trying to perform routine maintenence and a simple oil change that I wanted to take a sledgehammer to it.
My current girlfriend has a 98 Chrysler Concorde with a 2.7L V6 engine, and after she bought it we found out about the huge problems from very poor design that the company refuse to admit exist that can lead to engine failure. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=2.7+chrysler+engine&aq=1&oq=2.7+ And they are still using this same enine in new cars after knowing about the problems for years.
  • Chrysler Car Rental
I rented a small Chrysler UT last weekend out of Dullas Airport. I didn't recognoze the model name, however, the car rode well, was firm, got great gas mileage (31 mpg) to York, Pa. and back. The seating was very uncomfortable ( sore back) and the door arm rest was rough and gave me a sore arm after half an hour of leaning against it. Visibility was poor based on how the glass area was designed.
  • Chrysler & it's products
No question Chrysler could have done a better job in years past. However if you drive the current product, specifically the new Ram & Challenger, you can't help but be impressed. I've not driven a better truck & the Challenger does an excellent job capturing the past look while including all of the latest technology. Consumer Reports is not the only or the most reliables source in these cases. See for yourself...that's always the best test!
  • Brian
Okay Brian, we are going to go ahead and cut your wages and rework your health benefits. Then rework your retirement. If you are retired, we'll just scrap that altogether. Alright, sound good? Didnt think so. Alot of people are very quick to take away from others as long as it doesnt happen to you.
  • Good Point Brian
Ford is still borrowing! Listen, my 1994 Toyota Corolla with 196,000 miles has given me no major problems compared to the 2001 Ford F150 my boyfriend has with 98,000 miles on it. I would LOVE to buy American, but I don't have the money to keep up with all the work they need as they age! Sorry.
  • Chrysler Products
I never did like Chrysler Products and never will. I think they are JUNK and they should GO UNDER and should have when Lee Iacocca took over Chrysler and asked to be bailed out then... Chrysler Sucks!!! Good Riddens
  • ford is borrowing also
while true that ford is not borrowing from the feds, they are still borrowing big time. last summer the ford family hocked all their stock and set up an irrevocable line of credit with some big banks to the tune of 20+ billion. they are borrowing heavily from that line of credit.
so debt is debt and i seriously doubt any of the big three can survive without a thourough house cleaning. work rules, wage scale and health/retirement benefits for current and former employees have to be totally reworked or in the case of health/retirement benefits for retirees scrapped.
  • What if?
How about if everyone quit doing business with all of these banks that had to have a bailout. How long would they be a monster mega bank if no one would have anything to do with them? Might send a message to the government to boot. I will not but a car from chrysler or chevy again. Ole Henry Ford might of been a little rough around the edges but he knew how to do things and ran Ford his way, Must have rubbed off on a few that are around now, Guess my next car or truck will be a FORD.
  • Chrysler
Thank goodness! It's about time. Chrysler should have been gone in the 80's with the first bailout round. Let it sink.
  • Ford
I would love to buy a new Ford to show my support for a company that is not taking money from Uncle Sam. The last thing I want to do is buy a car from the US Govt.
  • Chrysler Bailout
GM and Chrysler have been bailed out with tax money forcefully taken from tax payers. I will give them my business or give them my tax money, but darned if I will do both. That new Ford F150 sure is looking good since the bailouts. If everyone quit buying GM and Chrysler cars, other companies looking to rip off taxpayers via gov't bailouts would think twice.
