Apr 20, 2009 -- New Jersey adopting decal to clearly mark teen drivers
Clark has long believed we need to do something in America to make teenage drivers stand out on the road. After all, auto accidents are the No. 1 cause of death for teens.
The consumer champ has always been excited by the Europeans' approach of putting a huge red "L" on the back of a new driver's car. Doing so ensures that other drivers give them extra leeway on the road.
New Jersey is now the first state to take action on this issue. The Garden State will mandate that a learner's decal be displayed on the cars of new drivers until they turn 21. The move should greatly please insurers who incur great costs to insure teens.
Yes, this is a small step, but it's a very important one in Clark's estimation.
New Jersey is also joining with other states in placing tight curfews on teen drivers; banning multiple passengers in a teen's car; and restricting driver cell phone use while in transit.
The danger of death is greatly compounded when there's more than one passenger in a teen's car. The San Francisco Chronicle reports 61% of teen deaths occurred when the car was driven by another teen. Meanwhile, 1 in 5 of all road deaths involves teenage drivers.
As parents, we don't want to restrict the freedom of movement of our children. But our first duty as parents is to make sure we have children who are alive and safe.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.
In my home country, it is standard procedure for all learner drivers (teens or adults) to display prominently a removable large L in red lettering. This provides other road users with an opportunity to treat the learner driver with some amount of caution. The USA should copy this long established practice.
Teen Drivers
Why to age 21. They can vote at 18?
Teens Driving
Teens should not get their permits till the age of 21. That will save many lives.
I'm a small-government type, but...
If the states want to do this, more power to them. It's not for the driver's safety, it's for everyone else's safety!
TEEN DRIVERS
THE L DECAL MAY SOUND LIKE A GOOD IDEA IF THE TEEN HAS THEIR OWN CAR, BUT IF THEY DRIVE THE FAMILY CAR DOES THAT MEAN MOM HAS TO DRIVE AROUND WITH THAT DECAL ALSO?
Young driver decal
I realize that driving is not a right, and that inexperience can be deadly however perhaps we should also identify "old men wearing hats", "mom or dads with a grouchy kid in the car", etc. Washington State has a graduated license and I think this is a good idea that works. Restrictions become less as the length of driving time grows.
Teen Drivers
Does this foolishness apply to military vehicles also ? Perhaps only if they also carry automatic weapons ? These people are adults, expect them to act as adults. Teach them as children to be responsible not when they turn 18.
your kidding right
I taught my daughter how to drive the right way when she was 15 and a half thats when she could get her learners permit. She is 21 never had an accident or ticket there are many so called expierenced drivers that cant make it 5 and a half years without an incident. Make traffic laws tuffer on the bad drivers and dont embarass the ones who havent done anything wrong
What?
Most accidents are caused by the NEW DRIVERS, not the other drivers. Maybe they charge an extra tax for the decals.
"L" Decals
I would agree for those that have their learner's permit. I don't agree to the age limits envolved. Age 20 and 21 are not considered teen years. If age 18 and 19 are considered an age of independence where a person is no longer controled by their parents and considered responsible, then they should not have to have an "L" decal.
TEEN DRIVERS
I THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA..KIDS FORGET EASILY HOW FAST SOMEONE CAN DIE IN AN ACCIDENT..THIS WAY EVEN THE CHILDREN WILL BE A REMINDER..THE "L" COULD STAND FOR "LOSS" AS WELL..
Driving is Dangerous, Period.
Something has to be done to promote safer driving. Text-ters are as bad, or worse than, drunks on the road. Not all teens are poor drivers, but in this day and time it is only smart to restrict their driving privileges until they gain more experience, and God hope, maturity.
More BIG BROTHER ...Enough!!!!!
teen driver decal
I also would be MUCH more patient towards an inexperienced driver. BUT, why limit the decals to teens? Why not require them for ALL drivers until they have had their driver's license for two years?
teen driver decal
in the state of Wa they already can't drive with others for six months, can't drive at certain hours. A decal is big brother going too far.
teen drivers
I would like to see a decal or other identifying sign on the cars of those with learner`s permits (no matter the age).Other drivers would be more patient and understanding.
New Jersey adopting decal to clearly mark teen drivers
This decal might attract the pedophiles.
Teen Driver Decal
Get with the program, let's do something about texting while driving. If your still inclined to do something about teen drivers- require an xxx number of practice hours spent behind the wheel before issuing a license.
Decal
Im all for the teen decal what a dumb thing for a parent to say let the parents teach there kids, they are doing a hell of a poor job teaching them anything now days
Teen Driver Alert
Putting a sticker on the back of the car won't make you a better driver, it just warns the drivers around you that you are young. Put a breathalyzer in the car and forbid cell phone use first.
Decal to mark teen drivers.
I see it a little differently in referrence to the parents first duty.
We as parents not the GOV. should be restricting the freedom of movement of our children (Why even the mother bird does not kick the newborn out of the nest until they have seen the consequence of not flapping your wings) until they understand that freedom is not free but is a privilege earned through resopnsible actions over time. So as we start to introduce the world of cars and mobility to our youth we must also apply the consequences and cost of such freedoms. Such as let them work and save for the majority of the car and insurances before they are allowed to drive. Next, besides teaching them rules of the road and showing them videos (how boring, no wonder they don't understand the potential they hold in their hands when they get behind the wheel) hold class just-outside the hospital trama center so they may have first hand opportunity to see the results of auto accidents rather them showing them movies. This may seem a little insensitive but truth and consequences are co-partners in teaching reality. Of course for parents who don't want there child to see the possibilities that await everyone of us who may make mistakes with our 2+ ton machines that we drive then they get the big red letter warning sticker to warn the world of there ignorance and lack of knowledge behind the wheel of a car and maybe they should be paying our insurance.
Newly Licensed
I love the idea, and I'm puzzled by those who object. Are you the same folks who object to putting drunk drivers in jail and revoking their licenses?
Teen driver alert
I think it is a wonderful idea! I don't know how many times I wished there was something like this when my daughter was learning to drive. Other drivers are impatient and rude and in my opinion they are the real dangers instead of the teenagers. There were many I wanted to smack for how they were treating her when she still had her permit.
teen driver alert
I don't think this is questioning ability, I think it's questioning experience. I have a 16 year old male who has been driving for 3 months. He is very careful and a very good driver, but he is also slower than more experienced drivers. I've seen people whip around him (when he's in the slow lane) and also almost hit him from behind when he's waiting at a stop sign. He needs time to gain more experience without getting hit by another inpatient driver. Maybe this would get them to back off.
teen driver alert
Sure, like I want my teen daughter who is driving home alone from her job at 11pm to have a sign that screams "I'm inexperienced and vulnerable!" How stupid is that?
Decals in Japan
Japan requires/allows decals for new drivers and for old drivers. I think it makes more sense to put decals on cars for drivers who are getting their first license and for elderly drivers, rather than just "teenage" drivers.
Decal
Applying a decal on back of vehickle to warn drivers that there is a young driver at the wheel is good. It could cause the young driver to be more cocious, as well
teen driver decals
What's the point? Some beginning drivers are better than their 20, 30, 40, 50 year old counterparts!!
The most dangerous are those over 70. Are we going to invoke a law that their cars have decals?
New Driver Sticker/Magnets
It's worked in Japan for years.
let's add an identifer for crooks to be able to see on who to pry on. Not a good idea!
NO NO NO
Why do we need to spend more money on things that have no purpose. I have 2 teen age drivers and would not allow anything on their vehicles. There are just as many bad drivers or worse(drunk driviers) than there are teens drivers. Look at the stats. Elderly are a close second to teens Why not restrict there's. Government needs to fix the economy and not my teen drivers. Georgia needs continue to keep unmarked car from giving out traffic tickets. Why do you need to be in disguise??
No to a Decal
We have 4 cars and 3 drivers. Before we got the 4th car (for our youngest son) we drive whichever car was most easily available, so at no time was there a special car just for the kid. No to a decal but maybe to a magnet!
Who cares about the teens on the road
Why is New Jersey so concerned about the teenage drivers, I would much rather know which cars are being driven by convicted drunk drivers.
Teen drivers
Forget the decals, up the driving age to at least 18.
Teenage drivers
I think it is a good idea to show some, way that they reen drivers. Also I was wondering if we could adopt nationwide overhear a Large L for leaner driver on the back of the car then people behind are not so impatint with the driver in front of them, this is what they have in the U.K. I felt better while learning that the people behind wouldn't get so agitated with me for going a little slower.
teen drivers
I was a driver examiner for the state of arkansas and after testing teen drivers, I found that experience on the road is all the teens lack. I found that all of us need to watch our driving habits. Most of us can not go one mile without violating the law. Pay attention when you drive and you will see what I am talking about. I've seen 14 year old driver that are better drivers than most adults.
Highway Safety in Georgia
Did you know that Georgia is the ONLY Southeastern state that does not permit unmarked police vehicles to enforce traffic laws? As a lawman, I can tell you that unmarked vehicles are a great deterrent to aggressive, reckless and speeding drivers. Ask your legislator why he or she does not support allow us Georgia lawmen to use unmarked vehicles to enforce traffic laws.
Georgia Driver Decal
My son has his permit and we use the car magnet for all our driving lessons. The car magnet is a warning to other drivers - be very careful around this new driver- I don't want him to crash into you.
CAR MAGNET
My son got his permit and I put the Newly Licensed car magnet on. Folks stayed back and quit tailgating us. Actually, they were very kind when they realized there was a new driver behind the wheel. Both my son and I were more relaxed. I will not let him drive without it and will insist he use it when he gets his full license. The Georgia DMV's are distributing the brochures. When you see the statistics of teen accidents- you would support it too.
Georgia -Teen Driving Identifier
Georgia offers the Caution-Newly Licensed car magnets to teens with permits and 1st year drivers. The magnet alerts experienced drivers to slow down and drive more carefully when near the inexperienced teen. Research done in other countries has proven that the magnet does prevent car crashes- not only for teens, but for other motorists. There are 250,000 new drivers in Georgia every year. They crash at a rate of almost 50%. Don't you want to know if one of them is driving near you? Teens have to get real road experience to make them better drivers.Let's help keep them safe and protect ourselves at the same time.
Teen Decal
Why would we need a law? Nothing is stopping you from putting a decal or sign on your car.
teen driving decal
YES-I am all for it!
! sign
This is a good ideea but need to be extended to everyone who just got a driver's licence regardlees of age! It works fine in Europe why not in US? One step further,it should be mandatory for everyone to complete a 3 month driving school before being tested and receiving a driver licence.Current requirements are putting not only the young drivers at risk but also everyone else. It's time for a change!
Good idea
I think its a good idea,I think it should be taken even one step farther. Anyone over the age of say 80 should have a big letter "O" for old on their back window. That way people will have more patience with the elderly, not tail gating and getting upset with them when they drive 10-20 mph slower then the posted speed.
Yes I am being sarcastic, this is a stupid idea. Just more examples of our liberal moronic goverment sticking there nose where it don,t belong.
Drivers license Nanny
This is a real good idea, especially for large metro areas. Driving in Atlanta rush hour is intimidating, so any help to distinguish inexperienced drivers ( and give them more room) would help me in being patient and avoid a possible accident.
There is an added Bonus, when the police have another way to distinguish under 21 persons in bars, clubs ... so they don't have to mark there tires any more - just look for the "L" leaving the lot.
good idea
We have a non-profit organization here is GA that sells magnets and stickers proclaiming "Caution, newly licensed driver". I have noticed that when my teen has this sticker on display, the agressive adult drivers back off and are more patient. When we forget to display it, my teen is honked at for driving too slow or taking too long to make a turn. I think a designation is a good idea!
Learner Drivers
I absolutely agree that new drivers should carry identification on their vehicles, just like the "L" plates used in the UK. It's a benefit not only to the impatient experienced motorist, but also takes pressure off the learning driver.
targets
Here in Ohio, we now have specialized license plates that DUI offenders have to put on their car. Now, NJ is wanting to point out teen drivers?.. Obviously, the DUI offenders need to be punished, but I'm not sure embarrassment is the way to go about doing it. Plus I believe it helps law enforcement target and easy ticket.
No sitting ducks
"Should make the criminals happy Can't wait to see the statistics on how many of the "sitting ducks" will be robbed or worse because the state of New Jersey has decided to point out an easy target."
that is an excellent point b/c an disgruntled driver will try to scam the insurance co.
I see Clark's point, but why target these people? I think the cell phone, curfew and multiple passenger thing is great on its own.
Should make the criminals happy
Can't wait to see the statistics on how many of the "sitting ducks" will be robbed or worse because the state of New Jersey has decided to point out an easy target.
targets...
I think this only targets our young adults. How many crazy people are already out on our streets looking for someone to "mess with" for their idea of fun? If there is an accident involving someone with this decal, they will automatically be assumed guilty. And I agree with the comment about child predators - how many sickos would love to have some easy way of targeting younger adults? I'm just very wary of this idea and glad I'm not in NJ.
I think that this is may be a good idea, but I've always felt 16 is way too young to drive. I think that people should not have their license, until they turn 21. I was 22, when I got my DL. After finding out that a teens brain, the frontal lobe(the part of the brain that controls reasoning), is not fully developed until the age of 21, it makes sense that young people should not be driving. They have way too many distractions, and unlike adults, they may not know how to quickly react to them. I don't know if the car decal will solve the problem, but it may help.
Kids aren't the problem
Give me a break, Clark. All the speeding, tailgating, honking, finger-poppping morons on the road that I've ever seen are adults over 30. Kids here in CA are some of the best drivers around. This is just more unwanted governmental intrusion; we have enough of that nonsense as it is. Spend the money instead on additional law enforcement to crack down on ADULTS who ignore traffic laws instead of hammering on kids.
Decals
What's next? The letter "A" in scarlet for certain people?
Kid Drivers
Might be a good idea to mark the cars and trucks of these kids. But not for the one's that are serving in the U.S. Military. They have a real harsh SGT. to deal with if they screw up, on anything. They learn real quick that somethings they cannot get away with, and what someone will overlook once, not twice. Maybe some parents need to be just a little more demanding of little Waldo or Waldoren when they get their license to drive a 3000lb weapon of mass destruction. Driver's education should be taught in high school with a either a pass-get the license, fail-no license. complete with a how to on emergency maneuvering on a track, this also must be a pass/fail situation at the learning drivers expense. How about a medical test for all drivers ever two years to maintain a license, you know vision, general health, reflex's. Might weed out a few who do not need to be on the road to boot. And last but not least, how about a law like in Germany about drive right, If your not passing, best be in the right hand lane, a little added incentive would be the police office pulls out his night stick and gives the offender a good rap on the skull for blocking traffic, might knock some good sense in them. At least they might learn to stay in the right lane after a while.
more nanny state tactics
Great...another step towards nanny state. Are we going to have a sticker for old drivers, felons, Dwi people? Where does it stop? Child predators will probably like this law too...nice of the government to point out the youngsters to them.
Statistics
Where are the statistics showing that labeling new drivers reduces the number of accidents?
Caution-Newly Licensed Car Magnets
Clark, The Ga. Dept of Highway Safety has supported the "Caution-Newly Licensed" car magnets for 3 years. The information was in Reader's Digest. the car magnets work!! Tell your listeners to go to the website (wwww.newlylicensed.org) or check out the billboards around the State.
unintended consequences
I can't help but imagine a Big Oil conspiracy theory behind training new drivers to always take separate cars instead of carpooling. Seriously though, a no-teen-carpooling law increases the number of inexperienced drivers on the road (not to mention traffic in general, smog, etc.) -- think about it.
"L" plates
As a military spouse living in Wales UK several years ago, I had to use "L" plates until I completed the rigorous licensing procedure required. A pain? sometimes . . .but I sure appreciated knowing that the person I was sharing the road with was not fully qualified, as yet. Most people were VERY understanding if I slowed down, etc.(they didn't know I was a foreigner probably lost in a new area!)I believe this type of identification should be required of both teen new drivers and immigrants. Driving is a privilege from my viewpoint and this requirement should be national.
Well duh...
Of COURSE the incidence of death is gonna go up when there's well, more PEOPLE in the car. I'm sure that that statistic applies in parallel to non-teen drivers as well. Blindly quoting statistics that in reality mean nothing just makes one look ignorant, Clark. A more useful one would be the number of INCIDENTS as related to the number of people in the car...but that's probably not as dramatic and easy to sell to insurers and parents as DEATH!
Marked cars
I don't know, sounds too much like "big brother" to me. Besides, I see officers every day sit by and watch cars run stop signs, not signal, speeding, etc., why would they bother watching for a sticker!!
