Apr 16, 2009 -- Store brands still more of a value than name brands

For years, Clark has been preaching about the value of buying store brands instead of name brands. But few people heeded his message -- until last year when the recession made it a necessity for many people.

In a surprising twist, The Financial Times of London reports that it's been mainly wealthy families earning more than $100,000 annually who are "trading down" to store brands.

So the brand names now have to figure out how to recapture the mojo for their product lines. For example, Procter & Gamble has decided to reinvent their presentation with what's called performance-based value messaging.

Their new Bounty campaign is "Clean the mess with less." What they're actually saying is that even though Bounty costs more than the store brand, it's actually cheaper because you need far fewer towels to clean up the same mess.

Clark's take on the issue? Don't fall for the advertising. The reality is that store brands are so much better than they once were. The private labels are no longer shelling out inferior goods. So you can be comfortable with saving the money when you buy generic.

In another retail trend, we're now seeing widespread market segmentation of store brands. You may see up to 3 different versions of a particular generic good -- each with a different price point and different packaging.

One product may be superior to the brand name; another may be equivalent in quality but 30% cheaper; and a third will be low quality for a dirt-cheap price, much like the original "no frills" goods of the late '70s and early '80s.

What others are saying

  • Walgreens Store Brands 100% guaranteed
Walgreens guarantees their store brands 100% buy it try it if not satisfied bring it back for a refund.
  • Store brand guarantee
Be careful of the store brand guarantee. At Kroger, it only applies to some products, and you need your receipt to exchange.
  • Kroger guarantee, revisited
I agree with Monika's comment (4/18). In my opinion here in southwest MO, Kroger outlasts the remaining store brands, especially the Always name. Just about everything by Kroger that we've purchased has matched up and/or succeeded past any of the brand names, and we purchase a large variety of Kroger's products.
  • Not true
I disagree. You get what you pay for. I find that generic or store brands are often, though not always, inferior. Foods lack flavor, spoil quicker, etc. It's rare that I find a store brand that can match a name brand. Don't even get me started on the garbage that the 'dollar stores' sell.
  • Kroger Guarantee
Kroger states that if you don't like their brand product you can return the unused portion for the actual brand product. Not a bad way to try out their brand!
  • Bounty vs store brands
Sorry, Clark, I do not agree on this one. I've tried many other brands and haven't found any to match the qualities of Bounty for texture, absorbency and softness. Sometimes you have to pay for what you want/require.
  • Name brands aren't necessarily the best.
As a packaging professional, I can say that many 'house brand' items are exactly the same product as the name brand, just has a different package/label. Some packaging even use the same photography. Personally, I like Trader Joe's. It is cheaper than the national brand, and since they are not under (as much) pressure to cheapen the product to inedibleness, the food is better and has fewer scary chemicals in it. The national food/consumer product companies are the ones who are shrinking the packages and charging you the same as before.
  • store brands
Publix brand items are terrible. I've tried most of the their items and they all seem inferior to name brand products. Wal-mart brand items seem to be pretty good.
  • Kroger brands
We regularly buy Kroger brand items and are happy with their products. We've noticed that their prices are cheaper than name brands most of the time, even if we have a coupon for the name brand item.
