Apr 10, 2009 -- Updated credit freeze guide available

Have you noticed that listener calls to the show about ID theft have dropped off versus a year ago? Christa speculates it's because people don't have as much credit to steal anymore!

Clark would like to believe the drop in calls is because his listeners have embraced his advice and frozen their credit. But he knows better! So a few word about the virtues of a credit freeze are in order.

When you put a freeze in place, it does not affect your current use of credit. You are simply issued a secret PIN from each credit bureau that prevents a criminal from opening up new lines of credit in your name -- even if they steal your identity.

The PIN can also be used to temporarily "thaw" your credit so that legitimate applications for credit and services can be processed.

The cost to freeze your credit ranges from free to $10 per bureau, depending on your state. So when you multiply that by 3 credit bureaus, you could pay anywhere from zero to $30 in total.

Victims of identity theft can have any fees waived, and seniors are often exempt from the fees in most states.

People often wonder why the credit bureaus aren't more gung-ho about people freezing their credit. After all, they do make money from the process. But it turns out that the money they make is puny to them. They'd prefer to make the big bucks by creating a dossier on you that they can later sell.

When you freeze your credit, however, the credit bureaus can't sell your info anymore.

What others are saying

  • Credit freeze whammy
I just received a notice from Transunion saying they will impose a fee for putting or removing a credit freeze on my information. Is it worth it?
  • Credit Freeze Works Fine
I froze my credit a month or so ago, and just saw a deal I wanted to pick up on. I'd save an additional 20% if I purchased with the merchant's credit. I used the telephone systems at the 3 credit reporting agencies to temporarily thaw my credit, and the new credit card was issued the next morning. I thawed for 3 days to allow for a hiccup... and my credit is now frozen again.

Thank you to Clark for letting me know about freezing, and providing the links and information to help me get it done.
  • Credit Report Freeze
Don't listen to Clark Howard on this one. While he is usually right - don't freeze your credit report. My husband and I took his advice last year and froze our reports. It is true you won't continue getting credit card offers. It is also true that you can not easily unfreeze the report. Using the pin I went to all 3 credit bureaus web page to get a temp freeze lift to refinance our house. 16 days later the credit is still not unfrozen. I have written and requested the freeze be lifted providing information required. Their response - to ask for more information. Meanwhile my husband and I can not refinance our property. Credit freeze sounds like a good deal but is NOT!
  • Credit organizations
I think them selling your information should be illegal. Seems to be a conflict of interest. I understand they make money off of supplying that info to reputible places that should be enough. Their mass selling of info helps cause identity theft. Also wheres my cut of my money its my info not theirs. I cant just go pick up someone else stuff and sell that what allows people to sell my private information. I never agreed to that at all.
  • Check accuracy before you freeze
Recently put credit freeze on file. I was unaware my birthdate was wrong and when I went to unfreeze the info. I supplied didn't match what they had. In addition, I supplied wrong PIN. Got it worked out but what a pain.
  • Use of Quizzle-like sites with a freeze
Be advised that you may not be able to use Quizzle if your credit is frozen. Not sure if it is possible to get around it yet but I tried creditkarma and it advised I could not use their site due to the credit freeze.
  • Credit Freeze
Paul 50% of you comment is irrelevant as 100% orf mines. Just ignore others, go drink coffee.
  • your tv show
My husband and I love your show, but at 22 minutes into the show, there is a break for Comcast News, and the show never comes back. What's up with that.
