Apr 10, 2009 -- Clear Internet rolling out to more cities in 2009 and 2010

Good news about the price of your Internet connection. The marketplace is about to get busted up by a third competitor!

Much of America has suffered under the shared duopoly of the local phone companies offering DSL and the cable giants offering cable modem service. But those who live in distant suburbs or rural areas may only have access to one or even none of those choices.

This is the year that things are about to change.

Clear (aka WiMAX) -- a new technology that sends out a blanket high-speed Internet signal to cover an entire metro area -- is set to roll out in a number of new American cities. Baltimore had been the first city to have it on a trial basis. Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland are the latest cities to get coverage.

Coming later in 2009, Clear will be extended to Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Philadelphia and Seattle, among other cities. That accounts for about one-third of the nation's population.

By 2010, Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C. will also be rolled out.

With Clear, you can have either floating or fixed wireless Internet. The former allows you to access the Internet when traveling at speeds of about 70 miles per hour -- hopefully as a passenger rather than as a driver!

Clark has a first-generation version of Clear (then called "Clearwire") at his beach home. He pays about $24/month and has been impressed by its reliability over the course of 3 years. But keep in mind that prices will likely fluctuate as Clear rolls out to more markets. The entry of a third player is always a game-changer in a capitalist system.

One word of caution: Be wary of your current Internet service provider trying to lock you into a long-term contract ahead of Clear's arrival in your market. With everything that's coming down the pike in 2009 and beyond, you definitely don't want to be locked in!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Clear Connect
Flight Attendant. Extremely pleased with the service in my Atlanta apartment and also the wireless while on the road. Easy to set up, and fast connect while traveling.
To my surprise, I was able to connect in Dallas and Raleigh last week and Washington today. No contract problems to date.
  • Clear's Problem is Physics
Clear offers service in the 2.5 GHz spectrum, as opposed to the 700 MHz spectrum that Verizon and AT&T bought into for their planned LTE deployments. The higher the frequency the more limited the coverage area, so it will take Clear a long time to build out decent coverage.
  • Clearwire are criminals
They won't refund your money and I had to change my debit card so they couldn't charge me for service I NEVER received and has since sent back the modem!!
  • Clear and Sprint
@Sun Pat, Sprint teamed with Clear to offer 4G. They didn't create it on their own.
  • Charter Comm. is much better than Clear
Charter gives me a faster DSL speed at home, currently at 10Mb, and at a cheaper price. Clear does not even reach that speed. The only thing Clear might be useful for is for Mobile Internet - but saying that Sprint is offering a free 4G device for mobile internet which is an established company. I do not really believe Clear offers anything special and it is not a good idea to lock in for 2 years until the smoke has settled.
  • Clear
I ordered Clear Home phone and just found out that it does not work with Security monitoring system. Be careful and do your homework like I should have.
  • Clear bad experience
Bought the home + wireless and in Sandy Springs at Dunwoody Place and 400 NO signal. canceled service but Clear would not refund cost of modem and card , I loose $183
  • CLEAR Customer Service is horrible
I decided on CLEAR to lower my internet cost. The rep that came to my house gave me wrong information all across the board. I just wanted home internet but I have a desktop & laptop. The rep said the modem wouldn’t work for the laptop so I basically ended up getting 2 wireless cards b/c of the special they had. I specifically asked how many days I had to cancel & was told 20. Once I realized it wasn’t cost efficient, I tried to cancel a week later and it became a big argument b/w the cust.rep & I. He was raising his voice and just being plain rude. Luckily I found the phone number for the rep that came to my house to back up my story. Once the cust.rep spoke with the rep that signed me up, he came back to the line with a new tone to his voice willing to help me out. I was able to change my plan to home and thought all was well. Until a month later, I received a bill again which I didn’t understand b/c I paid $65 when I signed up so when I changed my services I should have had a credit. I had a $3 credit and it was showing for a couple of weeks I didn’t owe money for the next bill (August). I check my email today saying I’m passed due. I then called CLEAR and they are basically telling me they are not giving me a credit and the original $65 I paid was for that month of service. I just don’t understand this mess I have only had this service for a month and have paid them now almost $100. My service is only $33.

    FYI

Be careful about the contract, I told them I didn’t want to be under contract after experiencing all this mess. One rep said it was fine all I had to do was pay a one time fee. I was then told if I wasn’t under contract then I couldn’t receive the special I was given.
  • Free Wifi
C-Channel also provides free wi-fi at locations across the city. For a complete list, please visit http://c-channelatlanta.com/locations/ .
  • Clear Internet-Not Such A Good Deal
I currently have comcast internet, I did an internet speed test and found out I'm at 14.95mb, Clear only has tops 6mb for the same cost as comcast. P.S. Comcast is a big investor in Clear! How can we get away from Comcast?
  • Best Buy / Clear: dirty tricks
The representatives pushing Clear at Best Buy stores are signing people up while conveniently "forgetting" to mention that there's a 2-year contract with $250+ termination fees. The Clear customer service rep I talked to said they've had tons of complaints against this practice by those reps, and they say they're not Clear employees even though they're wearing Clear uniforms.

And yes, it took me about 20 to 30 minutes to cancel, too, even within the 7-day trial.
  • It's working great in Atlanta!
I called their toll free number (888-787-2750), the sign-up took about 5 minutes, I got the modem the next day and I'm getting 7200kbps!
  • Clear in Atlanta
I see the negative comments posted
here.. but for me the customer
service has been outstanding. I called today to add an extra connection for only $5.00 and can not be happier. They even are shipping the extra hardware for free... the value you get is unmatched.. Watch our big 3 cell phone providers than offer slow speed wireless and a 5GB limit per month.. Clear offers a high speed 4Mps unlimited for less than your 5GB.. limited service. A word to the wise. Insider info told today is that Clear will go nationwide coverage by Sept.
  • Hard time canceling even during trial period
I just spent over 30 minutes on the phone trying to get this service cancelled..... even though I am still within the trial period. Not only that, they sent me "clear plugs" so that I wouldn't have to put my router in the garage with my modem. Because I have my current router configured for fiber optic, they were sending me the Plugs PLUS a router so I could get things hooked up faster. I am not a handyman and can't run cable, put up shelves in garage, etc. When the UPS box came, only the plugs were in there... no router. The girl on the phone said they still had to charge me for the router because they were not showing an overage in their inventory!!! Their company has the idea the customer is wrong... I will definitely dispute the charge AND tell everyone I know about this bad experience!!!! I guess I'll just stay with my 1.5 mb fiber optic connection.
  • Clearwire
I checked online today--July 15--and Clearwire costs MORE than my current Bellsouth DSL and it's also slower. Cheapest price for Clearwire was $55 monthly plus $5.99 for the modem. That's NOT a good deal.
  • Clear wire WiMax is where it's at
I have it and I love it, the price the simplicity of it and the lightning fast speed, you will have to move the modem around the house or apt to get the best possible signal, mine works best close to a window facing the city where the signal is coming from, bye bye comcast, hello ClearWire WiMax, I'm impressed! Check your own interenet speed at www.speedtest.net it's free and works very well, Good Luck!
  • Clear not as good as they say
I am very disappointed so far with Clear WiMax. I went to a retail outlet at a mall near me and got lots of guarantees about how fast the service was and even saw on a google earth map what the coverage was at my house and it looked awesome.

After hooking it up and moving it around to every room in the house, I can barely get 1 bar on the modem and get no signal on the USB mobile antenna. Download speed tests reports 750 KBPS from the modem, not the 6 MBPS I am paying for. It's slower then my cable modem.

I promptly called customer service and had a less than stellar experience. They told me that because there are a lot of trees around me that is probably the problem. Trees? Really?

So bottom line, don't believe the hype and I am glad they have a 7 day return policy because I am taking it all back.
  • Clearwire -JAX, OR, AK
I signed up with Clearwire in Jacksonville since it supposedly provides coverage in 3 of the 4 places I spend most of my time. Jacksonville, Oregon (Bend and Portland), Alaska (Anchorage only), but nothing in southern California. I have the wired home modem to carry around since they do not provide a USB modem for the Clearwire (evidently only for CLear). At best the connections are slow and intermitant in all three cities. Even with all bars lighted (which is not very often, usually just one on and off) is usually slow, with long pauses between a few decent spurts. Customer service has always been responsive, but not able to solve the problem of poor connection. Even in Anchorage equidistance from 3 towers had trouble holding a signal. Will admit that now that the Bellsouth DSL superior quiality had deteriorated to the typical ATT crap (with almost daily interuptions and even one 48 hr period w.o. here in Jacksonville) have been able to use the clearwire to at least stay parially connected. Maybe Clear Wi-Max is better, but will wait until a large number of positive shows up.
  • getcha gotcha stuff
Scott - there are no real gotchas because you have a choice on how you sign up for the service - contract or no contract. the contract saves you the minor $35 activation fee and purchasing the equipment (you lease it instead. I sell Clear and don't mid answering questions at anytime with no pressure. I have done so for a couple of people who have contacted from reading my comment to Lisa a little further down this forum. • Clear pricing
How much are the taxes and other fees? Any getcha stuff?
  • Clearwire experience
I have Clearwire in Jacksonville, FL and it simply does not work most of the time. I can't even browse ebay! It is literally as slow or slower than a dial up connection and Clearwire will not let me out of my 2 year contract when they fail to provide adequate service.
  • Where to get Clear
    www.clearinatlanta.com
  • Clear
I have both the mobile usb for my laptop and the modem for my home and I ABSOLUTELY love it!! I never have problems with the service..Not sure what is going on in Jacksonville, but I am in Atlanta and the service is Fabulous! Was able to get rid of Comcast and save myself alot of dollars. I hooked the modem into a wireless router and my whole house became a hotspot...Love it and will recommend to anyone!
  • WiMAX where have you been all my life..
I just finished my 7 day trial..all I can say is WOW! Fast Speeds and the only wireless service to offer true unlimited access(no 5GB monthly limits like the other guys). If you try it you will be hooked...
  • Call me for WiMAX
    Lisa,
Call me and I will set up a demo for you of the service. It's great!

  • I Want WiMAX I HATE Comcast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anyone know how I can get Clear WiMAX ? Pleeeeeease let me know :)
  • Cheaper and Faster then the Major carriers
I tried the mobile version and it's plans start at $30/month, that is about 50%less than all the other air cards on the market.

They all start at $59.99 and then you are FORCED into a contract, have to do the stupid mail-in rebates that I HATE and require a deposit.

When I get paid next month i am going to sign up with Clear WiMAX

Ps. www.ClearWiMAX4U.com have some good specials and also fast intallations. Hope this info helps,

    Take care,

    J
  • Still NO high-speed in my area....
I live in Alvaton, GA (about an hour from Atlanta), and we still have *NO* access to high-speed internet. I don't count satellite, because it cannot do half the things you want high-speed for, and it's very expensive compared to cable or DSL.
I live in a small pocket that is 5 miles from the nearest usable cell signal, and there's no cable service, and to date, no DSL.
I love it when a new Internet technology rolls out. It's always in the areas that already have high-speed. What about the areas that don't? I realize that companies look at a ROI before they will do something, but GEEZ! I will probably be the last guy in the country to give up dial-up, because that's all we really have access to out here.
I just checked Clearwire's site, and they say nothing is available for me either.
  • Fast & No Contracts, if you choose
Clear WiMAX is Greatý - jenniferý - Today
Did not want to sign a contract and they let you do that if you choose. My credit isa bit shaky,so I did not know if I wouldbe approved, but I was in less tahn a few minuets!!

The whole setup was fast and I was online inless than an hr after the Clear guy set my up.

Pros USB modem is the fastest thing i have ever used hands down!

Cons The Home Internet is faster than DSL but slower than Comcast (then again Clear WiMAX is alot less expensive)
  • Clear WiMAX is fast not the same asw Clearwire's old service
I have the USB modem and that thing is FAST -it's like Wi-Fi on Steroids, No really! Waaaaaay faster and less expensive than Wi-Fi hot spots and Air cards. You can read about it @ www.clearWiMAX4U.com and check out what Gizmodo is saying about the Clear spot
  • clear
The complaints about clearwire are from the pre-wimax customers, which is slow, the new wimax is what Clark is talking about. note the customer from portland.
  • Clearwire
If Clearwire requires a two year contract I will run the other way. Experience has shown-if there is a contract WATCH OUT!
  • Clearwire in Jax and Atlanta
Clearwire is launching wimax in Atlanta most likely this summer. The service currently offered in Jax is not true wimax. The only market Clearwire offers true wimax now is Portland Oregon.
  • clearwire
Clearwire in Jacksonville has horrible service stuck in 2 year contract soon to be over thank goodness.
  • Clearwire
Likewise for me. Crappy service in Jacksonville, and expensive to cancel.
  • Clearwire Sucks Eggs
Clearwire is nothing but aggrivation and crap. We had it in Jacksonville and it was terrible. constantly lossing the signal. E-mail programs didn't work at all. Then when we tried to quit they attempted to charge us $200 even though they couldn't provide services. They had the nerve to charge me $200 to quit the service. They are sharks and snake oil. Clark you should be embarrassed to even mention them!!!!!!
  • Clearwire
I have been a subscriber to this internet "no service" for 1.5 years, stuck in a no good contract, they have been the absolute worst service available no faster than dial up charged me for web hosting that I never signed up for, and instead of reimbursing my acct. they offered a free month of hosting, of something I don't need.
Wi max or not no way would I ever sign up with a company like this.
  • shop lifting poll
A few years ago I saw some teenagers shoplifting cigarettes [reaching over the counter when clerk's back was turned]I grabbed a clerk told her they took the kids to office--their Dad was out in the car waiting for them--he came in and started yelling at me!! cause I turned the kids in! He paid for the smokes and took kids and left in an huff!
  • AT&T Uverse in Atlanta
We have had this service for over a year and it is much more reliable than cable internet. We live in Kennesaw so it is available in metro areas other than Sandy Springs.
  • AT&T Uverse in Atlanta
AT&T already offers 18 Mbit internet service for $65 for customers with fiber to their street. Currently limited to Sandy Springs.
  • Internet Service
Here in Georgia, we have a choice of slow or slower for Internet. What ever happened to that "white space" service Clark mentioned a while ago?
  • Bandwidth?
I believe the bandwidth is significantly lower with clearwire versus cable or fios. The cost is slightly lower maybe $5 per month, but you're cutting your bandwidth considerably.
  • Clark recommends Clearwire?
It has very bad service here in Jacksonville and they lock you into a two year contract. You have 10 days to try it and if you are 1 minute past that you are stuck. Customer service is terrible. I am shocked he would recommend this service. I would stay away from them if I were looking for a new iSP
  • I have it and love it
I made the switch from Comcast cable to Clearwire WiMAX here in Portland OR and I love it. I got the plan that mixes the Home and Mobile plans, and it's really fantastic. Outside of the ability to use my laptop ANYWHERE without having to buy credits a plan or search for free WiFi, the home service is very reliable and the price very competitive with Comcast. Better yet, I was able to cancel my Comcast internet and keep TV without getting dinged for it - you get a discount on cable Internet if you have cable TV, but not the reverse.
    Switch now!
  • Many complaints against clearwire:
    http://clearwiresucks.com/blog/

I've also read they are mostly "pre-wimax" in most cities at this time, so performance isn't as good some places as others.
