Apr 03, 2009 -- Get that new PC feeling again with free downloads

Is your computer running slowly because of a virus or spyware?

ComputerWorld.com recently featured a list of 15 free downloads you can use to bring your computer back up to speed.

(Editor's note: Clark is not responsible for the content on ComputerWorld.com. He is merely presenting their list of PC fixes for information purposes only. See below for his free spyware protection options.)

Meanwhile, on a related note, Clark recently read a tech writer's review of the revisions of major browsers like IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and others.

Mind you, the consumer champ is not one of those anti-Microsoft guys. But let's just say the verdict wouldn't exactly please Bill Gates.

Firefox was named as tops and Chrome came in second best. And IE? Well, it was roundly panned.

  • Clean my PC
    Clark
I made a download direct from your web site for a free clean up my PC program. The only problem is this will run a scan for free then try to scare you into paying about $40.00 to fix the problems. This may not be be a scam but it is about as close as you can get to one. I am really surprised that you would endorse something that appears to be very shaky and then leave it on your website.
  • free downloads for pc
Clark please check your recommendations. Nothing is FREE. I installed the PC clean up from PCworld and now my computer is running worst. The others comments probably are well justified where more spyware programs were installed. I will try to cancel my subscription-it was a $29.95 plus the $9.95.
Clark must be getting freebies from PCworld to recommend them.
I am upset that I took Clarks word and did not check.
  • Free Downloads for PC Speed
The only thing free on this planet is air, PC Tools does not give the program to speed up your PC for free. Either you pay 29.95 plus 9.95 s/h, or signup and make a purchase at one of their preferred retailers online. How is that free software, yes you can download it but to actually perform the clean up it costs MONEY.
  • scams and virus
How to get Google has a problem and needs to close off my PC
  • Free means free; companies hope you buy their NonFree later
Look, you get what you pay for. I have used Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, Spybot S&D, Avast!, AVG, for long long time. They work! Do the updates! Avoid some of the Spybot features.
They hope you will buy their NonFree products later. I did: I have nonFree Avast! now.
  • 15 Free Downloads
I used several of the programs and there was a noticeable improvement in an old notebook PC that is running XP.
  • FREE Software is another SCAM
Clark needs to stop asking people to go to his website. It is a ripoff.
  • FREE software
Have to agree with all the negative comments. There is nothing FREE and in all probability I have added tons of ad ware from trying to see what these FREE software programs could fine. Just took a nose dive on my opinion of Clark, who I heard for the first time today on his show. I thought how good this guy was and he should be cautious about recommending his website as having FREE software that will fix our problems. Check it out Clark - you will find that it does not do what it is professed to do "free spyware protection options" are not there.
  • Spyware
I downloaded the first "free" software on the list and was very impressed with what it appeared to be doing. That was until I figured out that by "cleaning" my laptop, it installed over 300 spyware domains in my computer registry. It took over an hour to clean them out and I have since burned the list. I thought that since it was mentioned on this web site and was from a published article from a well know magizine, it would be safe. But, once again, there is a reason the software is free. Instead of cleaning my computer, the program loaded spyware.
  • Virus After Reformatting
I think Rick it right Once you reformatt your hard drive the "long way" There is nothing hidding in the bushes. I have tested many hard drives with antivirus programs after reformatting the "long slow way" And have found nothing What's up with that Mike????? Are you an antivirus program seller???
  • Virus After Reformatting?
This is in response to Mike's post regarding viruses that can't be gotten rid of by reformatting a hard drive. I have never seen a virus that I couldn't wipe clean by using a second PC to reformat a hard drive (Not a quick format.) - Mike could you be more specific on what virus under what conditions cannot be removed by formatting?
  • Browser
Firefox and the Adblock Plus add-on: you'll never want to use IE again.
  • Cleaning or Reformatting?
Some systems have a built-in restoration partition (look in 'computer' or 'my computer' for a C and D drive (there is actually one drive, but divided into two)). Usually, you hit Alt+F11 or just the F11 key as the system restarts and you can begin to restore your computer to factory default. You may have to use the original DVD/CD's and reboot to them, but either way should get the job done. Also, always maintain a backup of data...always. Buy an external Hard drive or burn the files to a DVD and keep safe. An antivirus program will slow down a computer, especially one with lots of music and videos. YOU must use an antivirus program if you use limewire, morpheous, etc peer-to-peer (P2P) programs: key is to scan the file before you open it once it's been downloaded. Finally, I recommend for PC users to create a limited user account (control panel) and use it to search the web (you will be very pleased with the results); and, when you have the computer running just the way and the things you like, do a Registry backup!!! You will never need to fear a virus again! Good luck!
  • Stop Using Windows
Switch to Linux. Try http://linuxmint.com for a great, free OS with free software.

  • Reformatting
In case you didn't know there are some viruses that you can't get rid of by reformatting your hard drive.
  • Just reformat
There's nothing better than a brand new reformatted computer. You know it's clean and you don't have to worry about anything hiding. I do mine every few months and I always will, and I don't use any dum programs that clog up my computer that's a waste of time and money. The so called free ones are the worst.
  • Internet Browsers
The newest version of IE (8.0?) isn't so bad, but it's still a bit slower and less secure than other choices.

Don't be fooled by the Apple and Firefox fanboys, though: both Apple's Safari browser and Firefox were recently hacked into in record time in a competition program. Only Chrome came out unscathed.

Chrome gets me recommendation for average users because it's so simple to use, simple to update and fast. Personally, though, I use Opera and love it. It's a power users dream and also one of the safest browsers out there with built-in e-mail, RSS feeds, chat and all that jazz. It's also best for those with disabilities since it can be used completely without a mouse.
  • Reformatting---Just Say No!
You get one guess who runs a local PC repair shop: the guy suggesting you "regularly" reformat your hard drive---period.

That's the biggest load of hooey, since Apple came out with the "anti-PC" ad campaign.

Reformatting your hard drive is the equivalent of stripping your house down to the foundation--instead of repairing the siding or replacing some damaged shingles.
  • reformatting hard drive
Jersey Chris (04/06/09 02:46:10 PM) No one could have given any better advice than reformatting your hard drive. I do mine once a year (more often if needed). Everytime I get sucked into installalling malware or some other super duper software to monitor my computer it just bogs it down. I've reformatted for twenty years and as long as I don't add the supplimental adware progams my computer runs fine. The worse offenders are the "free" applications promoted by different shows and web sites. They are a nightmare to remove and they keep pressing you to buy the better version.

My son put me onto Firefox and I'll neer go back to IE.
  • cleaners
I soundly give Ccleaner a thumbs up!
I tried spybot after two months of everyday use and it still got nothing from using http://www.ccleaner.com/
  • Firefox
I've been using Firefox since it came out and wouldn't use anything else!
  • Best way to speed up your computer
Ultimately the best way to speed up your computer is to back up your important data (photos, music, documents, locally-saved email, etc) then reformat your hard drive and reinstall your operating system. This will wipe any malware and get rid of any applications you no longer use that might be taking up resources. At that point, run Windows Update (PC) or Software Update (Mac) to install patches and software updates which are critical for protecting yourself against potential security risks and performance bugs. When you can no longer update any further, install your malware programs followed by your everyday applications as you need them. The will help cut down on the amount of software that is needlessly taking up system resources. Also, you most likely don't need the virus software that says it does everything to protect you six ways to Sunday. These applications take up a lot of system resources and will bog your system down. Research safe surfing to avoid potential bad guys and you won't need mega protection. It's amazing how much faster a computer feels with a yearly wipe-down.
  • Chrome
I've used Chrome on my new Dell PC. Works great, but has some serious bugs in it - like not being able to respond to a Hotmail email.
  • Which program did...
Christa use to speed up her old computer? I checked out the comments for the programs listed in that article & many were not complimentary. I use my computer for work & absolutely cannot afford to mess it up or have it compromised in any way. Healthcare HIPAA issues.
  • free apps
    a must have ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
  • Internet Browsers
I use Firefox on my MacBook and love it! Very easy to use, many add on utility software available and very good security.
