Apr 01, 2009 -- An early look at the price of gas in summer 2009

Where will gas be as we begin slowly approaching the summer of 2009? $3/gallon? $4/gallon?! How about between $2.25 and $2.35! That's the latest word from The Houston Chronicle, which closely follows the oil industry.

Some of you may recall that last year before the peak of the run-up in prices, Clark predicted the national average for a gallon of gas would be $2.25 come May 1.

Long-term, there's no question that we have a problem with supply and demand in the oil market. With today's relatively cheap prices at the pump, this may be the perfect time to steal a deal on a fuel-efficient vehicle since nobody else seems to want them.

Meanwhile, the airline industry is another sector that relies heavily on the price of a barrel of oil.

The airlines have been experiencing terrible sales as of late. So if you have frequent-flier miles in an account, this is the best time to redeem them since the '80s.

For the rest of us, domestic coach fares will be a real deal. Southwest Airlines is offering $98-$238 roundtrip anywhere they fly in the United States. And it looks like the "Gang of 5" full-fare airlines will have to follow with their own heavy summer discounting.

Clark predicts buying a ticket in April for summer travel will be a much better deal than buying closer to the summer -- if you can get the kind of lead prices Southwest is advertising.

Looking to go to Europe? Book a flight for May and you could score a roundtrip ticket in the range of $400. May fares are the best they've been since 2002. No word as of yet on the international deals for June, July and August.

What others are saying

  • Oil prices will increase during the summer as soon as the heat waves starting showing up pepeople are going to start turning on the ac. AC requires energy what are some forms of energy OIL.
  • Gas prices will only go up-along with everything else.
The price of gas, along with EVERYTHING else you purchase is going to go up. Not just because of inflation of the dollar, but also because of Cap & Trade the Statist / Enviro-Nazis are pushing to impose on the U.S.A.

  • Drill here drill now foolishness...
We just don't have that much proven reserves, and even if we hit a few more really big deep reserves in the gulf of Mexico we will have a very hard time drilling up enough to impact world markets. Don't let last year's political rhetoric fool you (or make you sound a fool.) Now having said that, there are two countries that have more in the ground than the Saudis ever had. You might want to get the facts! Who? Canada and Brazil. It is harder to process (Canada) or harder to get (Brazil), but it is plentiful. Be nice to Canuks and teach your children Portuguese, because these are the oil rich nations of the future.
  • Fuel Prices
DRILL HERE,DRILL NOW.We need to use our own Resources and gas/Diesel engines are not going away!
  • Gas Gouging
You saw the price of Oil collapse, but notice the price of gas never followed as quickly. I didn't think this drop would last, but gas prices spiked during both Bush admins + wars, but dropped during Clinton's. From a consumer standpoint, maybe our "friends" in the Middle East like Dems better, but hope we don't have a Carter era.
  • fees
I like low fares but the result might be like flying in a third world country really old planes. And with pilot working for half the pay they did 2 years ago and after losing their retirement I expect less experience . As long as we get cheap fares who cares.
  • Airline fuel surcharges
How come the airline fuel surcharges are not affected by the price of fuel? Probably because it is just a junk fee that was created to hide the actual price of a flight. Oh well, they will probably be the next to be bailed out.
  • Ga Senate Bill 57 eliminating yield spread
There go no closing costs mortgages. Brutal if you refi and have lost equity already and don't have cash to cover costs. Sounds good - will be a loser
