Mar 30, 2009 -- Cash-back credit cards trump affinity cards

There's a new gotcha involving those kinds of credit cards where you try to rack up points for free travel or free merchandise. These types of "affinity cards" are tied in with a particular retailer or airline or other business.

However, the risk is that with so many companies on the ropes, these points may become fool's gold should that company go bust.

The only reward you should be getting is cold hard cash. By all means, if you already have a lot of points, you should use them up as quickly as possible. But be sure to then make the switch a cash-back reward card.

Looking for a cash-back card? See some options that pay 2%.

  • credit cards
your ideas on the show about crdit cards suck
  • Best Rewards card - - Just my opionion
Ditto on the "read the fine print" comment. As a semi-pro rewards card guy, I recommend the following wallet contents:

    1. 5% Discover Gas Card (I have 3 cards due to the $100/month limit)
    2. 3% Costco AMEX card restaurants (incl. fast food)
    3. 2% Fidelity 529 College Savings card for most everything else

Also hotel credit cards have nice rewards that they pay up-front so you don;t have to actually use the card much. Marriott is my favorite although you have to ask to convert to non-rewards after one year to avoid the annual fee. (Remember the most sizable rewards on hotel cards tend after the first use.)
  • discover
the only good thing about discover is the $100 cash back you get after spending your first ($500?) on the card...then as has been mentioned the cash back promo is a tease...i only use it for the specified 5% cash back promo and only until i hit the cap....if they try and charge me a fee to renew they will go in the trash, but hey $100 cash back on a no fee card is a pretty good promo.
  • Read the fine print
Discover card is a piece of crap. It will give you 0.25% if the purchase is part of your first $1,500 in total annual purchases
0.50% if the purchase is part of your second $1,500 in total annual purchases, and
1.0% if the purchase is part of your total purchases in excess of $3,000
You will get 5% Cashback Bonus only on the first $400 if you are enrolled in their quarterly programs
  • affinity cards
We use our United VISA card all the time, you can use the points to join the Red Carpet Club, which gives you all the comfort in a first class lounge. It is better that trying to save for a ticket. Just pay for the ticket, and use the points for the pleasure
  • Discover card
I love my Discover card for giving me 1% on purchases, and 5% on selected areas of retail (ie, travel, hotel, home improvement, etc). They also offer up to 20% cashback if you go through certain select companies. The main two drawback are you can only withdraw in increments of $20 and not every place takes Discover.

If you're an environmental hippie, they also have bio-degradeable cards!
