Mar 25, 2009 -- CheckingFinder.com locates high-yield checking accounts

The web has made finding the best deals on banking so incredibly easy. It's gotten to where you can just pop in your zip code to see if a small community bank or credit union has a great deal available near you.

For example, some checking accounts come with very high interest rates because they're essentially funded by retailers! Merchants pay exorbitant fees whenever you run a debit transaction as a credit card and sign for it. So the bank, in essence, rips off the merchant and then passes along a part of the bounty to you.

This is similar to a checking account equivalent of a credit card company offering big cash back rewards funded by heavy merchant fees, according to Clark.

CheckingFinder.com is one website where you can search by zip code for high-interest checking account offers. The consumer champ popped in his zip and found 2 banks paying at least 4% on their accounts.

Most of these kinds of accounts will require you to do a certain number of debit card transactions each month and they may have other requirements as well.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Banks too far away
Just remember that you can bank anywhere you want. All ATM fees are refunded if you meet the basic qualifications. It doesn't matter if the bank is 800 miles away. People need to READ more. Then you would understand.
  • High Yield Checking
YESSSS! My ship finally came in! Thanks Clark for the scoop on the high yield checking account. My employer recently added this bank to their portfolio and luckily the bank is located less than 2 miles from work!
  • Many many thanks!
The first issue I got of your newsletter had the item about the high-yield bank accounts. I checked and there was one just a few miles from me, so I immediately changed my checking acct. to them for 4% interest - I really appreciate the information!
  • Hey y'all, just lighten up a bit out there!
The state of the economy being what it is, and the people in Washington D.C. running it being who they are... I want to keep a good amount of money in "cash". I have four accounts filled to the max with a debit card for each one of them. I have to use each debit card at least 10 times a month. This is really no major deal. I use debit card #1 the first week, #2 the second week, etc. I pay for all small things with my debit cards but not big things because I don't want to drain a lot of money out of these 'high yield' accounts that are earning interest. These accounts are FDIC insured. I started at 5.08% last summer. In January the rate went down to 4.0% but that's still way better than I would be getting in a moneymarket. I don't mind doing a little 'work' for an extra $4,000 in interest a year, and actually this is no extra work at all because I would be paying for things with a credit card if I weren't paying with a debit card. Clark has put you onto something good here. Listen up!
  • Moolah
I see that Royal Bank offers a high interest checking if you have $25,000. Too rich for my blood.
  • Location Location
I live in S. Ca. It's directing me to Mid West and East Coast Banks
  • Free Checking
What a joke! I live in Ventura Cty, California and they were directing me to banks in Missouri.
  • This is a piece of cake!
I just joined a credit union that offers 4% for the first $50,000. Making the required 10 debit card purchases is as simple as 10 pieces of gum individually checked out at a self-checkout at the grocery store. Done!
  • High interest checking
Check out Catholic and Community Credit Union, Shiloh Il, 5.25% interest
  • high yield cking accts
Clark! The two banks offering interest in my area (75050) require you to use their DEBIT cards!
  • high-yield checking accounts
Way too much BS to get a good rate! Most of these banks requires 10 to 15 transactions. You will end up spending more than you will ever make!
  • Southern Community Bank & Trust - Excellent Employees
I first learned of high-yield interest checking accounts last year on Clark's web site. Southern Community Bank & Trust in NC (several states away from where I live-OH), is great. I have been very pleased with their service and with the employees. You can't find a nicer group of people in the banking industry today!
See my original posting about SCBT after having opened a checking account (w/out opening it in person).

You won't regret choosing this one!
  • high interest paying checking accounts
And for how long do these banks pay these rates? Check out a credit union, their services are tops. Why keep more in your checking account than you need, based on your monthly expenses. I use a checking account earning 1% and the rest of my funds go into a money-market account earning 2%. A phone call can transfer funds to and from either account.
  • How about a high yield savings account
Any tips for finding a high yield savings account or MMA? I checked Bankrate and they only list the banks that pay them a listing fee so it is not very comprehensive.
  • Capital Bank
Capital Bank in Raleigh, NC does is as good as it seems. You do have to have a direct deposit or bill pay and use your debit card 10 times but for 4% it's a good deal.
  • Allstate Bank has great savings rate
Talk to your Allstate agent and they can get you a high yield savings account
  • ILLUSORY SAVINGS
...what a farce...great rates..I have about $98,000.00/.......but a ripoff...you have to have debit trash junk card purchases.....maybe 12 of them a month!!!..banks are 112 miles away.....up to 478 miles....Ohio....must initiate direct deposit......this is a stinking tortured complicated way to try to get 4%....forget it....I have all that thru current banks.....
  • CheckingFinder.com
Though I live in Virginia, the site sends me to banks in Ohio & Missouri! I did try typing in my zip code several times and got the same results. Then, tried another zip code (CT) and it sent me to the same credit unions & banks.
  • high yield checking
This must be an eastern phenomenon. It does not seem to be available anywhere near SW Washington state.
  • high yield checking account
Thanks Clark for checkingfinder.com. I just got a 4.25% checking account for my elderly parents, 94 and 97 years of age. They had enough money in their checking account at another bank which we cancelled. They are now making more than just a few pennies a month. Keep up the good work and keep us informed. A long time listner.
  • In the Raleigh, NC area
Here are banks that I know of in the Raleigh, NC area that are offering high-yield checking accounts.

    Crescent State Bank ~5%
    http://www.crescentstatebank.com

    Southern Community Bank ~4%
    http://www.smallenoughtocare.com

    Coastal Federal CU ~4%

    Capital Bank ~4%

  • I was thinking about this the other day...
I believe that this also is the reason why we have free checking now. Nothing is free in life! In essence we really are paying for checking but through our merchant transactions since the merchant jacks up the price of the goods to pay for these transactions. So really we are getting ripped off. Well not really because were actually paying for checking accounts again and there not free.
  • Another useful website
This site has a useful list as well.

  • checking accounts
This sounds pretty good. We may look into Brookhaven since it is almost around the corner from us and we can go in if necessary.
  • high-yield checking
clark look into the fine print before passing this info on to your public. most have alot of costly parameters that need to be met before you can draw this interest. do your homework!!!
  • High Interest Checking
Are you kidding? My current bank does not have enough branches and puts a hold on my check if I do not go into the branch, why would I want a banks 352 miles from me?
  • High Yield Checking
Woo-Hoo! One within 20 miles of me. I'm not so sure about using a debit card though - I never do that. I thought you get charged - will have to calculate if it's worth it.
  • Checking Accounts
I believe checking accounts are not FDIC insured is this true?
  • high interest checking
Well... I searched by my zip code in Northern Va and the closest 'deal' was 800 miles away!
  • Bank Locations-High-Yield Interest Rates
All the locations are too far from my home town but did find one in Jax, Fl. that pays 4% at FirstAtlantic. A great bank and they help with problems.A wonderful small bank.
  • joke
this is a joke. there are no banks close. maybe online yes.
  • high yeild rates
Our United Heritage checking was paying 6.01% to start. they reduced to 5.01% and are currently at 4.01%. I love it. So much better than any CD I could get.
  • Mail delivery
If mail delivery goes to only five days a week, will bills from people you owe add an additional 2 days to your due date to make up for Saturday non-dilvery?
  • Bank Locations - High-Yield Interest Rates
Too far away for my zip code. I lkie to be able to look my bank rep right in the eyes.
  • High yeild checking
Limits of $25,000 is a drawback for me, is there anywhere with high yields for $100K-$200K ?
  • internet banking
Distance doesn't matter nowadays since majority of banking is dealt online. Most banks charge fee if you seek assistance with account inqueries in person or over the phone. Sort by rates instead of closest distance for the best rate option.
  • nothing closer?
I cant believe that the closest bank is over 200 miles from Chicago. These banks must not like to operate near major metro areas or something.
  • A better site than CheckingFinder.com
    Try http://www.highyieldcheckingdeals.com/
This website is has all deals. Checkingfiner.com just has banks that advertise with them. I have an account with a local community bank that isn't listed on checkingfinder but is on highyieldcheckingdeals.com
  • another site for high yield checking
I just realized that the this site is likely a better one for finding a high yield checking. http://www.highyieldcheckingdeals.com/
  • Take advantage as long as you can
We have such account. It is nice to get 5% APY. The online statement an at least 1 automatic ACH is not much an issue. So is the 10 POS transactions. However, no sure how long these offers can last. Be careful though for the fine print--I am trying to open another one which is not local and the terms is a little unclear to me thus far. I mean the fees that may involve for say ACH transactions.
  • Checking account interest
I have one in my town and it started at 6% and is now down to 4%. Free ATM fees up to $25 and must use debit card 8 times a month. Also, one automatic debit or credit per month. IT IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • checking account interest
Great! I found one in my little town paying 4%!!!! Thanks Clark.
  • in a galaxy far far away
I am in San Diego and the closest one is 189 miles away. Go figure???
  • Didn't work for me!
The nearest bank on this list is 129 miles from my home.. And I live in a highly populated place (LA metro area).
  • Love it...should have done it long ago!!
To the person who wrote this...ATM withdrawals are not one of the qualifications on the account. I would re-read and give it another shot. Another 2-3 % is significant interest these days.

    THEY IMPOSE BAD CONDITIONS
...I do not like the ach mandatory feature, and I do not like the ATM mandatory withdrawals.......this is not for me, too many unneeded strings on my cash..I can live at 2%......
  • Reward Checking
Leave the megabanks for community banks and credit unions. BofA and the other bailout recipients won't be systemically essential if you close your account! I made over $1,000 in interest last year on my Reward checking account!
  • Check out credit unions too!
I searched in my zip code and couldn't find any credit unions listed. But ours offers the same rate 4.01% as long as you do 12 or more debit transactions/month. To switch my account over, it was just a matter of a phone call. It is great and I yearn 2% extra each month.
  • THEY IMPOSE BAD CONDITIONS
...I do not like the ach mandatory feature, and I do not like the ATM mandatory withdrawals.......this is not for me, too many unneeded strings on my cash..I can live at 2%......
  • Check Finder.com
I recently switched over to a local community bank using CheckingFinder and am excited about making some money on the DDA! It's always a hassle to close one account and reopen another but the future rewards will be worth it. I am required to make at least 10 debit card transactions monthly and allow one ACH credit, like an auto deposit of your monthly paycheck. another plus is the bank will refund ALL ATM charges.
