Mar 23, 2009 -- Store brands have new mojo in down economy

Store brands are really gaining momentum in this time of a slowing economy. Grocery retailer Kroger reports it's now getting close to 30 cents out of every dollar of revenue from sales of its private label brand.

Private labels are so much cheaper than name brand goods, typically by about 35% or more.

Clark recalls the first big wave of private label goods back in the '70s. They were just awful and came in plain white packages with black lettering. No logo whatsoever.

But today, private labels meet or exceed the name brands at a cheaper price. Retailers get more money whenever they're purchased and shoppers are obviously happy too.

Wal-Mart has historically been about offering brand names for less, but they're reintroducing their Great Value private label because the timing is right. Likewise, Costco Wholesale is trying to reinvigorate its Kirkland Signature brand.

Both stores hope to experience some of the mojo that Kroger has going right now with its private label.

As Christa notes, many private labels succeed in catching your eye because the packaging has become more fun over the years. Her children particularly love a no frills brand of oatmeal because of the cartoons on the box.

No longer is it necessary to buy the store brand cereal and pour it into the brand name box to fool the kidlets!

  • adding it all up
My wife and I have been using store brand formula since our baby was born last February. As we do with everything else these days, we wanted to see what our real savings was on this and found a special caculator done by Parent's Choice. Putting in our brand against the comparable Wal Mart store brand product we learned we were actually saving $58.21 a year or nearly $700 a year. When you look at this objectively and realize that the nutritional value of all formula is regulated by the FDA, making them the same in that area...it's hard to imagine going any other way.
  • Walmart Baby Formula
The Walmart brand baby formula is equal to the quality of big name formulas like Enfamil and Similac - FDA requires formulas to have the same ingredients by law. Walmart's Parent's Choice Infant Formula can save parents up to $600 a year on formula for each baby, which is a great savings in this or any economy.
  • Soda
I have to disagree with the soda being of less quality. The Walmart brand and even some other generic brands are just a good. Coke and Pepsi brand their products so well people have a hard time getting over that though! I can tell when people give me wierd looks for offering them a Mountain Mist from Aldi's

  • Love the wal- mart
we shop for most our groceries at the wal-mart and found that it saves us at least $50 per week (family of 5). Expecially the store brand items - but like all things they are based on experience, for example with Ketchup, peanut butter and soda I have yet to find a non major brand that I like. also please be smart on the use of the word "organic" that is fast becoming an expensive word that may mean little based on the product
  • It pays to shop around
Sorry to disagree, but Walmart's "Great Value" brands are a notch above the quality of store brands offered at Safeway and Kroger. A good example are the GV cake mixes - less than $1 and every bit as good as Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines that cost 3X more.

Meats are another story though. Way too many stores now sell beef and chicken "pumped up" with salty broths. Safewat still sells real meats that aren't adulterated with weird chemicals.
  • Kroger
I've tried every cheap brand ever imagined and Kroger offers the best quality for the product. They have ones with the white label that are extra cheap and not good. But the ones with nice labels, are very good. Its closest thing to a brand name I've found. Target brand or great value dont even get close. I buy 75 percent of my groceries at Kroger these days, including diapers. Buy the Kroger brand, but dont go to the white labels cheap level. I mean have some standards. LOL.
  • Store Brand Mojo: Infant Formula
Store brands do have mojo in this economy, especially when it comes to buying infant formula. Stores like Walmart, Target and Kroger have their own private label infant formulas that can save moms up to 50% versus the name brands. Great news in a bad economy!
