A new quarterly survey from Forbes has come up with a tally of the best and worst places to seek work in spring 2009.

Among the best spots:

Yakima, Wash.
Kennewick, Wash.
Anchorage, Alaska

Sioux Falls, S.D.
Barnstable Town, Mass.

Meanwhile, the cities with the worst job outlooks:

Cape Coral--Ft. Myers, Fla.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Miami--Fort Lauderdale--Pompano Beach, Fla.
Santa Barbara--Santa Maria--Goleta, Calif.
Naples--Marco Island, Fla.

What others are saying

  • Work/ Taxes
President Obama says he will create jobs. But he will also take more from those that creat Jobs. Even if he took all the wealth of the upper 10% it will not be enough to pay the 3 Trillion dollar bill coming due. Foreigners will soon discover our debt is not secure. Inflation equals high interest rates and corporations being ran out of this country by high taxes, union consessions and bitterness against coorporations. That is that sucking sound Ross Peoit was talking about. Reinvent yourself, get out of debt, live below your income. Income is your only wealth producing tool. Don't wait on goverment to bail you out, Join the Tea Party.
  • Kennnewick Wa job market
Living in Kennewick, as Charles W. must, I agree! Im addition to the areas he mentioned, technology is huge from areas such as fuel cell development to smart power grid technology. We arwe also home to the producer of the fastest production car in the world - the Shelby Areo the only 2 seat jet airplane manufactured for sale to the public. Our housing market is still strone with very little decline in value, and our commercial construction is alive and well. A not to Clark, pronunced the city names correctly.

  • Kennewick, Wash. Job Market
Anita mentioned that most of the jobs in the Yakima and Kennewick area would be in farm jobs...not so for Kennewick. Kennewick is diversified, with atomic energy production area clean up, glassification of atomic waste, manufacturing, construction, wine production, etc. The Tri-Cities area of Kennewick, Richland, Pasco have had tremendous growth in the past few years and the area is still growing. • stay home
to all ya northerners, stay home the south don't need ya!!
  • Employment
I have 3 degrees. 1 in History, Management Information Systems, and an MBA. I have had no success in finding work. I believe there is ageism that is highly prevalent. My personal situation is complicated because due to health reasons I'm on disability and I'm only allowed to work a limited amount of hours. It has been bleak in St. Louis due to Boeing, Ford, Chrysler, Citigroup, Anheuser Busch, and other companies laying off.
  • Sioux Falls, S.D.
I just got back from a visit to Sioux Falls, where I was born and lived for 24 years. I was so impressed with the growth and overall good looks of this city. It didn't feel like there was a recession there at all. It looked like the city planners of the last 25+ years really knew what they were doing, and I'm told there is amazing growth in the medical fields there.
  • Culinary positions
Anyone know of good spots for Baker/Pastry positions??
Please don't make me laugh by saying Vermont.lol
  • to EMPLOYMENT.. why don't u go out and get a job or two..and work like the rest of us. I'm sure McDonald's or Wal-Mart is hiring. getting unemployment checks can only last so long.
  • Hi
You left Springfield MA off the worst list; traveling to Boston MA isn't a walk in the park, but it is worth it. Anyone have any feedback on Des Moines IA, Lincoln NE, or Nashville, TN.

    Thanks for all your suggestions
  • jobs
Huntsville, Al for those with technical degrees. Lots of opportunities. Second largest research park in US.
  • Forbes - independable
I don't believe ANYTHING that comes out of Forbes...and neither should anyone else.
  • Bleak in GA
I live in the Atlanta Metro area. Since being laid off last June I have found two jobs only to be laid off from both due to company financial strains. I'm still on the hunt.
  • Best cities for a job
    Among the best spots:
    Yakima, Wash.
Kennewick, Wash, Anchorage, Alaska, Amarillo, Texas, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Barnstable Town, Mass. Are there any others? Any in california? What about
    Sacramento, California? Renton, WA?
Moving for any reason, including a job, costs. I'd have to sell my house, and my mother would have to sell hers. She's been trying to, but so far, no bite.
  • Hickory NC area
This area has been affected by the furniture decline. Distribution (MDI, Target) and IT (Google farm)are growing industries. Family friendly, great schools, strong values, hard working and motivated workforce, 4-yr and 2-yr colleges in town, great weather. New industries need to take a look at this area.
  • Yakima and Kennewick Wa. jobs
Yakima and Kennewick are farming communities and probably most of the jobs are in the fields.
  • Jobs galore
Plenty of jobs now available at Oak Tree Seed, fraudulently swinging elections!
  • Teaching jobs in the South
Don't head for Florida !!! Plans are for Orange County (Orlando) to eliminate hundreds of jobs and that is after closing smaller schools and reassigning teachers if possible.
  • Employment
So far I'm doing quite well on my now extended unemployment benefits. I have no wife, no kids. I would appreciate if ya'll would get a job, preferably two, and pay your taxes. This is the best vacation of my life. Thank you Mr. Obama... this is change I can believe in!!! YES, I CAN!!!
  • jobs in New Orleans area
there are jobs in the New Orleans and surrounding parishes and despite what you have heard or seen in the media it is a fabulous place to live and raise a family
  • Money/jobs
You have to go where the money is. It worked for me for over 45 years. I moved many times but stayed employed in 2 fields and never took a cut in pay.
  • If you want to stay in Atlanta - RUMC

  • Best Job Cities
It depends what you do for a living. If you are trying to land a teaching job, skip the Northeast and Rust belt; head south or west where the population is growing :)
  • Detroit is at the bottom
Indeed.com has a report of the top 50 largest cities, ranked by the # job postings per capita: http://www.indeed.com/jobtrends.jsp Detroit is #50 out of 50 and Atlanta came in at #30.

Since they're a job search site they get job postings from all over the internet so the data is probably pretty good.
  • fake furniture? Economy?
Ikea might be importing what you call fake furniture but here in Charlotte Ikea is employing a boat load of people. The store is packed every day. Bouy from Ikea means I can change my decore 4 times in 20 years as my tastes change and still not have spent as much as I would have on one set of furniture from Haverty's that I would feel obligated to keep for life because of the cost. Here Here for imports! I love the jobs they give my community and the great prices.
  • What doesn't match?
    Tallahassee?
  • Get Good and You'll Get Work
If you are good at something... You will always be able to find work. Good at Photography, buy a pro outfit ($2500.00) and shot weddings. Like music... Be a DJ. Like to dance... work for a DJ as a motivator. There is work in the Entertainment Industry.
  • what work
What kind of jobs are they talking about? There is some kind of work available in every city.
  • No Work Any More - Mr Change Will Pay You
You do not need to work any more Mr. Change can use your help to pass out our MONEY
  • Economy
WOW! I just spent the weekend exhibiting in the Atlanta Home Show. The media had me terrified that no one was spending money. WRONG! I was pleased to see good show attendance and a number of strong leads. Turn off your television and get out of the house!
  • Deadbeats need not apply
There's work in Atlanta for those willing to get off high salary and job title expectations. And when you are working, work harder than the next guy. Remember the adage, when being chased by a bear, you only need run faster than the guy begind you.
  • Job Market?
Looking in the paper for work takes about 2 minutes these days. And that's including time to sip your coffee. It's pretty bad down here.
  • Detroit Not on List Due to Bailout
Detroit isn't on the list of worst places for work because all of us gave them a bailout. Perhaps Atlanta can get a bailout, too. NOT!!
  • Jobs
In this environment you need to think about the skills and experience you  have and employ yourself. When no job is available, make one. Yes, we could use some American Made furniture.  Most people that have purchased furniture within the past 10 years are willing to pay more for quality.  Most of my stuff has been replaced once some things twice within the past 15 years. It is less expensive to buy quality once instead of these cheap Asian imports. However, that is all that is available.  I don't remember my grandparents purchasing new furniture and my parent's dining room set is over a 100 yrs old.  Just saying... People will pay more for quality (not the cheap looking unfinished furniture stuff) American products.
  • No Jobs?
There's jobs out there. You just don't want to do that kind of work. You might get dirty.
  • Is this right?
I find it very hard to believe Detroit is not on the list.
  • Hickory,NC
Having lived in Hickory for 10 years, the decline in furniture manufacturing and the high imports of cheap, fake, you assemble furniture.
  • Work???
Ya'll left out Atlanta on the worst list.
