Mar 06, 2009 -- Another breach of credit card numbers?

A recent report in USA Today suggested that we're now in the midst of a third major breach of credit card numbers that could affect both Visa and MasterCard holders.

This breach again involves the back-office operations where credit card numbers are processed on behalf of merchants. Surprisingly, these operations typically use the most sophisticated levels of encryption available for our obsolete magnetic strip card system.

The direct danger to you is if the crooks behind this breach make a duplicate of your credit card and start charging it up. Of course, you can always dispute the charge with your credit card company. Ultimately, your liability is zero.

However, if they have your debit card number, you have very few rights under the law. You can have checks bouncing all over the place if they empty out your account. And your bank is not even required to cover you for overdrafts under this circumstance!

Neither Visa nor MasterCard are talking, so we don't know exactly how many people may be affected either way.

Unfortunately, we will continue to be vulnerable until we get modern "smart chip" security standards for our credit cards like they have in Europe. American Express tried to lead the charge on this stateside, but the banks pushed back. Sounds like the heavy hand of government may have to intervene with some regulations on the industry before anything gets better.

So if you use a debit card, here's your assignment: You've got to monitor your account everyday online. This is the only way you can limit the amount of harm in a potential breach.

What others are saying

  • Wells Fargo
There was an oline transaction that was coming out of my account, i contacted the bank to stop it, but they can't help me get the money that was already taken. Wells Fargo won't pay me back, won't tell me the name on the account that was being paid with my money, and it isn't my account.
  • Fake Mastercard - happy ending
I belong to a reputable credit union in my area (it was founded for a nearby large military base for their employees in the early 20th century). I noticed one day that my debit/credit card didn't work. I promptly checked my account - everything OK. Then on Monday morning, I called my credit union, and they said someone lifted my number and tried to charge a $600 purchase and an $800 purchase, but the fraud department caught it and canceled my card before it had a chance to show up on my account! I heartily recommend credit unions, and I feel safe with mine in the way they handled this! Needless to say, I will probably use this card in fewer venues in the future. Even so, I check my balance often.
  • charges on a stolen&closed Steinmart M/C
My credit card was stolen last June in Barcelona. I called that day and cancelled. Three months later small charges started coming thru on this closed account. I can't get M/C to stop the use of this card and they are trying to charge me. Any suggestions?
  • debit card
    Hey Clark,

I have a "debit card" but I requested that it not have a VISA function, so it still works as a POS debit requiring a pin number entry, but won't work as a VISA. It was at no charge with NCSECU. It's also, of course, an ATM card. There are a surprising number of stores that accept it that way... grocery, gas, majority of big retail outlets. If it doesn't work I can use my "real credit card"... only down side is that some cashier's don't know the difference and try to run it as a VISA, which fails... then I have to explain...;o)
  • Monitoring Bank Account
I disagree on the issue of checking your banking account online for the reason that if you have a compromised computer your more prone to fraudulent activity. I would say using a landline/cell phone would be best. I used mine so much that I call the number and don't even wait for the prompts because I've memorized the sequence of numbers/poundsigns to enter. You should too!
  • Theft of MC and Visa numbers
This happend to me last week. No one has an explanation, but my Capitol one Visa, and my bank check MC were both taken and charged against. I now have $138 in overdraft fees. I have closed the accounts with no replacement cards being issued...but no one seems to give a crap. The bank must have lost a bundle on this because they are fighting me telling me that they dont show all the charges I am claiming. Luckily I printed the screen from my on line bank statement as the charges appeared...they are now gone from my screen. Crooks.
  • ATMS & Gas Stations
I had my info stolen after I got gas at a pump with my debit card. Within 24 hours they recreated my magnetic strip and had my pin from when I plugged it into the pump. Almost $2000 gone 3 days before Xmas!! I don't understand why banks and CC companies aren't trying to make cards that can't be so easily hacked & recreated! You think they would rather fix the problem instead of spending tons of $$ paying back their ripped off customers.
  • Unauthorized charges on debit card
What can you do about all the extra charges companies put on your account when you order something that is supposed to be a FREE TRIAL on line.
  • Strategy for Fake Visa/MasterCard
I have a fake visa/mastercard that only has $100 in the checking account. I then use another account and transfer money back and forth.. If a charge greater than the threshold will be declined.
  • Credit Cards
I just received a new card from Citibank along with notice my old number had been compromised by a merchant database compromise.
  • Report please
Why can nobody provide a report of who exactly this was? Like TJX and BJ's before them - I will never do business with a credit card again for them. BUt this sounds like a 'processing center' - where we have no choice in how it's done.
I heard it was things like gas stations.
  • Sears Mastercard issued by CITI CARD
Mine was hacked using it at a Marshalls store. This has happened to me at a TJMAXX two years ago. Its a pain to have to wait on a new issued card, as I use it for all billing and purchasing. But I must say CITI is right on the crooks and stopping them quickly plus notifying me what has happened.
  • Debit Cards
I only use my "debit card" as an ATM car. Debit cards are asking for trouble.
  • (And by "that" I mean monitoring your debit card account regularly.)
  • Duh. You should be doing that anyway.
  • debit card
I had to order a new one as I was notified by the bank that there was some attempted unauthorized activity. I wonder how I could find out more. My bank only knows that they were advised of some 200 such attempts. Nothing of mine has disappeared as yet. I'm watching.
  • Credit Card Breach
We were hit for over $6600 this past weekend. Got a call from the (I assume)from the clearing house fraud department. Contacted Our Credit Union on Monday. The store reversed the charges and a credit showed up on our statement 4 days later. We were going to be stuck with the 4 days of interest if we had not contacted the Credit Union again. They are looking into refunding the 4 days of interest at this time.
