Mar 05, 2009 -- T-Mobile's $50/month unlimited plan for longtime customers

There's a fare war going on, but it's not with the airlines. It's with the cell phone carriers!

It all started with Sprint's discount division called Boost Mobile. Boost Mobile offered an unlimited talk/text/web plan for $50/month -- and that includes most of the taxes and junk fees.

The impact on competitors was immediate. Industry reports have suggested that T-Mobile suffered the most defections to Boost Mobile. So T-Mobile has now introduced a loyalty plan to counteract its competitor's pull.

If you've been with T-Mobile for at least 22 months, you're eligible to switch to their all-new $50/month unlimited talk plan. T-Mobile's system supports a lot of great handsets that Clark thinks will appeal to consumers more than Boost Mobile's antiquated hardware. However, T-Mobile charges an additional $20/month for texting and web access vs. Boost Mobile's all-inclusive $50/month deal.

If you're eligible for the T-Mobile loyalty plan, you should see the offer when you log in to your account online. If you don't see it, go to a store and tell them you want to convert.

Verizon and AT&T both have yet to match the $50/month unlimited offers, but Clark thinks loyalty plans should be used industry-wide.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Loyalty Plan
So I've been with T-Mobile for about 4 years, had a family plan for that long. Our second contract term expired in July, and I had no desire to sign another one. However, t-mobile called with a special offer, and now I pay 69.99 a month for unlimited calls for two lines. I also got a discount on the sidekick and g1 plan, and only pay 20 each for both. Go T-Mobile! All in all, I pay about 120 a month for unlimited everything on two data using phones, which is impossible anywhere else.
  • $18 Upgrade fee
I just signed a two year plan with T-mobile. I bought a new phone with a mail in rebate and paid $18 "upgrade fee" to purchase this phone and the $18 was taxed. Is this legal?
  • T-Mobile "Drop Dead" Letter
I'm a few months into my 4th year with TMobile, beyond the contracted 1st two, as an AK resident.
When I signed on for service, during visit to DC area, made it clear I live in AK, out of TMobile's standard coverage area; the response, was "no problem". Now, with all friends, family, etc having my #, received an unsigned/undated letter from TMobile, saying they don't want my business anymore, since I'm "roaming" too much.
When queried, TMobile's customer service people state:"...business decision...too bad..."
  • Cell phones
Clark always to the rescue!! After having AT&T for 6 years & phone problems after contract expires I am D.O.N.E. with the big cell phone plans. MetroPCS is not in our area yet but I will not renew my contract with ATT but stick it out until a better plan is available. Thank you Clark for all that you and your staff do to keep consumers aware of the rip-off's. Doesn't corporate America get it...rip people off and lose your business. Or, give good customer service and grow your biz by leaps and bounds!!
Happy Day..Shelia R. in Pensacola, FL

  • Loyalty Plan Fine Print
This is the fine print on T-Mobile's Unlimited Loyalty Plan:

[{{ Limited-time offer; subject to change; non-transferrable. Unlimited Loyalty Plan Terms: Unlimited features are only for direct communications between 2 people. Domestic only. Plan does not include messaging. General Terms: Offers available only to current customers who have been on qualifying post-paid plans for at least the last 22 continuous months. $35 per line activation fee applies to new lines. Regulatory Programs Fee (not a tax or government-mandated charge) of $.86/line/month apply, taxes, fees, and other upfront and monthly charges may apply. Taxes approx. 6-28% of your monthly bill. Bill Credit: Subject to credit approval. New 2-year service agreement required. Number must be ported to new qualifying line from another U.S. wireless carrier; allow up to two billing cycles for credit. Abnormal call patterns: Call duration and/or your continued eligibility for service or any rate plan may be limited or terminated for (a) consumer protection purposes, (b) abusive conduct or abnormal call pattern(s), or (c) significant roaming. Your primary use must be within T-Mobile’s owned network coverage area. }}]

You are getting a 2 year contract with this plan, if you take it.
  • Unlimited minutes--T-Mobile
I've been surprised to see so many not get offered the unlimited minutes by T-Mobile. I have to admit, since my contract ran out last November, I've only been going month-to month with them while I figured out if I wanted to stay with them or go elsewhere. I called and asked them about deals, but none of them were good enough at the time to make me want to sign another contract, so I kept going month-to-month. I also let T-Mobile know that I wasn't sure if I would be staying with them or going elsewhere. I've been with them for 3 1/2 years.

I moved 4 months ago. When I would call customer service with questions I would always hear the computer voice ask if I wanted to hear about their special offers. I ignored this for two months as I didn't want another contract. Finally a week ago I decided what the heck and listened to it. Wow! Imagine my surprise! I was signed immediatly, no hassles, no questions. Well, questions from me as I kept saying, "Are you sure it's this simple? Are you sure there are no hidden fees?" The lady was very nice and laughed at my increduality. I waited a few days and called back to make sure I had indeed been signed up and I was. This is great and all with no contract.

I was surprised to see such great write-ups about Boost, however. I checked their website. That showed me their offer was $50 a month but each phone call was .10 cents a minute. So, unless I read it wrong, it came across as $50 a month PLUS a charge for each minute you placed a call.

I have reached customer service individuals at T-Mobile who have told me the wrong thing before. What I've typically done is waited a few hours to a day and called back and spoken with someone else. That is usually all it's taken to get the correct information. So, those of you have been turned down, call back, and don't take no for an answer. Demand to know why if they turn you down, and if they can't tell you it is their job to find someone who can.
  • Unlimited plan
Tmobile is denying that they have such a plan. Called today
  • one more thing..
when I call tonight I will also be getting information pertaining to dates of the end of our contract, early termination fees (I've heard they prorate?), and everything else needed to get away from this company. Since SunCom switched we have had nothing but trouble. Each time I call I am told the opposite of the truth (example: I went out of the country in Jan and called over a month beforehand to request an unlock code as (I told the lady) I would be purchasing a prepaid sim card in a foreign country (not T-Mobile sim = needs unlock code). I was told I didn't need one, of course that was incorrect. I spent almost an hour on the phone with T-Mobile using my calling card from EUROPE and still didn't get the code until 3 days before I came back to the states.

I upgraded to the G1 when it was released and was told I would not have to switch my SunCom UnPlan. Wrong. They offered no equitable compensation/plans (2 lines, 1 @ unlimited for 60/mo and the other at 1000 for 30/mo and they wanted us to take a 1500 shared fam plan at 80/mo and free my faves for 1 year. after that year we would have to pay for them.. what?)

I can not wait to get away from them. My code should be useful when switching to AT&T though..
  • loyalty unrewarded
I have been a customer of T-Mobile (SunCom before it was bought) since 2001 and have never been late on my bill. I was told that I was 'not eligible,' however, nobody at their company seems to be able to tell me exactly why this is. In fact, they do not know what the specific requirements are. (or so they say) What is most frustrating is that my parents, who have been with them for less time, are eligible. When I ask about this the only response I get is that it is for "select customers." The only difference between my husband and I's lines and my parents lines is that we use more minutes. Perhaps they are not offering this to people who would actually benefit and only to people who really wouldn't use the minutes anyways, thus having T-Mobile benefit more? Hmm..perhaps another phone call to customer service is in order (as if it would do any good). Anybody else have similar situations to this?
  • UNloyalty Plan
10 years with company, never late, never disconnected, 2 lines, data plan with G1 and still cant get plan?? Nothing about this suggests they reward loyalty...Will be looking to switch...
  • T-Mobile Customer service
May be I should call it no custumer service. We did not have any luck with this company so far, we have been with them for over 2 years now and it all started with coverage and roaming. Our first trip to Colorado, we could not get our phones to roam as there was no T-mobile coverage there. The reason we were given was that they had no roaming agreements with Cingular in that particular area. Well that sounds Ok. until our nest trip to another state and another state and we got the same answer. So if you were sold on a free roaming plan, guess what, they do not have a lot of roaming agreements in place (at least two years ago they didn't). Then we had an issue with dropped calls at home, where we had a very weak signal to start, and the phone will not pick the siganl from another company, because again they do not have a roaming agreement for our area. Fine, we learned to live with that, because like many we have tried other carriers and they all have their issues. Until a few weeks ago, when we had to take a defective phone back to the store, where they told us that we have to go through customer service and they dialed the number for us. This phone had issues from the time we got it back in Novemeber of 08, but like many we are too busy to deal with this (good thing these days) and when I took it back to the store, a T-mobile employee would open the back, check the phone replace the battery and give it back to us, where it would work for a few weeks. On the phone, they tell us that we need to ship the phone to them but they will have to check the phone and if it showed physical or water damage, we will be charged $100, which I really did not like, but the rep. did all his diagnostics and assured me that the phone is not showing any water damage. Here is where it gets very interesting, we come back home, we place the phone on a shelf for a couple of days until we got the new phone and the return box, where I took extreme care following their instruction to replace the phone and package it. After all this, we are told now that we have to pay $100 because the phone has water damage. No luck getting a resolution through T-mobile, we are going to the BBB.
  • T-Mobile loyalty program
Been with T-Mobile for almost three years and called them the other day asking for this plan. They said my account didnt qualify. I asked why and she said that it depends on several factors including bill pay and others. I have never been late (in fact pay my bill early) and never even gotten a free phone upgrade. She said I still didn't qualify and would not tell me the reasons why. She said the system would not show her. My contract ends in six months and I will be going with boost mobile...
  • T-Mobile $49
I have been with T-Mobile since they were Airtouch and maybe even before I just can't remember the company's name that far back. I was told I was not eligible due to my region. When I told them my neighbor 3 doors down told me of the offer; I was then told it's not available to everyone at this time. I expressed to them my disappointment in my neighbor a 5yr loyal customer vs. myself at least a 10yr loyal customer being able to get a plan that I don't qualify for - T-Mobile did nothing so we are looking at Sprints everything $99.00 a month.
  • Only kinda good
My wife and I were thrilled with this option... until we actually tried to set it up... I have been mostly happy with T-Mobile for 9 years, never missed/never late... I also have the $10/month @home phone (internet phone). We were able to transfer my wife to my account, and hoped to sign up for the Unlimited family plan ($90 for 2 lines) and add unlimited texting for $20... We were told that the only way to do this would to increase the price of the @home line to 39.99... Otherwise, we have to pay $50 each for min + $15 each for unlimited texting... Customer service has still been great, but this policy SUCKS. T-Mo should reward loyalty, not punish me for siging up for @home.
  • T-mobile $50 unlimited plan
My mother just told me that she has been with T-Mobile for over 22 months and they are not giving the option to all customers! T-mobile is sending out letters to those they want to choose! T-mobile is also saying that you can't be late on your bill and then there are other qualifications. So please e-mail me any and all details if you were able to get on board with this plan! They didn't give her the plan because of some other discount that she have with MaryKay! We have a family plan with 4 phones and I am paying $95 per month for my line! This would be an outrage if we couldn't qualify! This info was given when talking to a rep over the phone! PLEASE HELP US OUT WITH THIS! E-mail me at stealth300@hotmail.com
  • T-mobile Loyalty plan
I have been a T-mobile customer since 2003. I have been having a problem replacing my son's phone. A button fell off his T-mobile Shadow which was purchased 7/08. They said the defective button was not covered under the warranty because it was normal wear and tear. I explained then that the phone must not be designed to last a complete year. When I threatened to call you they offered me any phone at the lowest price without extending my contract. I wasn't happy with this so I decided to think it over. While thinking about it I heard you talking about their loyalty plan. I checked it out. My family(husband, two children and myself) currently share 2000 minutes ($99.00) and unlimited text (19.99) and there is a fee for each line ($29.97) and a hot-spot for my husband's laptop ($9.99) with other fees our bill is about $200.00 a month. To change to the Unlimited family plan ($89.99) with two additional lines (39.99 each)with the unlimited text and hot spot I am still at $200.00 a month. No savings just a repackaging.
  • t-mobile loyalty
SOOOO glad I heard Clark's 5 Mar '09 podcast. Just called and changed my plan from unlimited @ $99.99 to the $49.99 unlimited loyalty. Just had to add txting for 4.99 and I cut my bill down by $50 a month!!! WOOOWEEE
  • credit card debt saettlement
can you settle your credit carddebt with creditors and if so how does it work.
  • Not a deal for us
My husband and I have been with T-Mobile before they ever became T-Mobile. We are on their "family plan" @ $99.99/month. We also added my parents for an additional $9.99/month each. Switching to the "loyalty plan" would cost us a LOT MORE since each family member is charged $39.99 EACH!
  • To Rachel...it is 22 continuous months...see below

  • T-Mobile
Well I pay about 42$ a month now. I might think of switching if it was cut and dry 50 amonth plus taxes but it's not so I will stay put!
  • T-mobile
We have two phones with them. We were able to convert one for 49.99 and the second for 39.99. great deal for us.
  • T-mobile
I just called T-mobile. I have been with them for years. I had the unlimited plan for $100.00 a month plus taxes. The recording as you wait for the operator tells you to ask about the deal. I now have the same individual plan unlimited calling anytime for $50.00 a month and I accepted the $4.00 a month for up to 400 text messages and some number of photo sending for $65.00 including taxes. Thank you Clark,
    John
  • The operator told me 24 Month
I have been with T-mobile exactly 22 months and I was so excited to hear you talk about the loyalty plan, but when I called T-mobile today to get information they told me that I had to be with them for 24 months, not 22 months. I'm so dissapointed!! If this is true, you might want to post a correction on your website or talk about it on air.
  • about time on rewarding loyalty
It's about time a cell company rewarded loyalty. I'm with AT&T and every offer I get from them is with an additional line of service. How many people do they think live in my house? Everyone who is old enough to have a cell phone has one!
  • T Mobile Loyalty
I was able to switch to the plan by logging in to My Account. The offer was the first thing to appear when I logged in.
  • T-Mobile Loyalty
I called them and went on the website... the $50 loyalty plan does not appear that it applies to "Family" plans.
