Mar 04, 2009 -- Going the non-contract route for cell service

Are you overpaying for your cell phone service? Carriers love to lock customers in contracts because then you're obligated to a much more expensive plan than you typically need.

There are a variety of non-contract plans out in the marketplace that can be a real benefit to consumers.

If you use less than 300 minutes/month, you'd probably do much better with a pre-paid plan where you buy minutes as you need them. Net10.com is one service Clark particularly likes in this arena. There are no roaming charges and Net10 only costs 10 cents/minute.

If you're use more than 300 minutes/month and travel from time to time, you might want to consider Metro PCS or Cricket.

Finally, for heavy cell users, Clark likes Boost Unlimited. They have an all-inclusive $50/month plan that beats many of the big carriers. The only drawback is slightly outdated web surfing capabilities.

Of course, you can port your existing number over from any of the Big 4 carriers -- whether you're currently with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint or Verizon. Just watch for those early termination fees!

  • pageplus
Has anyone used pageplus for either the prepaid or unlimited plan? 120 days to re-up minutes (min $10) = $40 a year for an emergency phone. Seems like the best deal going, no? Am I missing something?
  • Love TracFone
I have been a cell phone user for several months now. I own a TracFone cell phone (which is a Kyocera K126C model). The reason why I like TracFone a lot is because there are no monthly fees, bills, unexpected surprises, etc. with the phone that I have. It is the type of cell phone that puts people in control. With a TracFone cell phone, a person can add as many minutes to it as they like, regardless of how much or little they talk on the phone. Plus, my phone has a Double Minutes For Life benefit, which means that all future minute cards that I add automatically double and also add more service days to the service end date (for instance, if I add a 200 minutes card to my phone, I actually get 400 minutes, due to the double minutes benefit). I would never use a cell phone from a provider that charges high prices for minutes that I won't need, expensive cancellation fees, etc, because I feel that those types of phones (contract phones) are not good for some people's budgets. I understand that every person has their own preferences as to what type of cell phone they want to have, and what features they want on it, etc., but I will stick with Tracfone. Their phones are excellently priced to fit almost every person's budget and help cut costs on phone service a lot.
  • Tracfone destroyed my account in one phone call...
In one day, Tracfone shipped me a defective Motorola W376g phone to replace my defective w376g phone. When I called to activate it, the rep lost my old phone number, then lied to me about when their customer "service" closed.

You are CRAZY if you consider Tracfone. These people are idiots.
  • Straight Talk
I'm thinking about getting a prepaid phone through Straightalk. Does anyone have this plan and is it as good as it sounds?
  • cell phone services
Watching Robin a few days ago, Clark did a spot for a low priced, service & phone (Straight Talk ) I thought he said...can't find them ? can someone help me please?
  • Cell Phone service
I listened to a Clark Stinks recording specifically because he never mentions coverage or quality when he talks about these new cheap cell phone services. I was anxious to here his response about that and felt he didn’t really answer it. I agree with the caller. Why should I buy into a lot of grief loosing signals, or not getting a signal to save money on cell service? If the coverage is not there, or is a poor quality, than you’re comparing apples and oranges when you just consider price.
  • Net10 Service Agreement Question
In reading their service agreement, it appears that if you don't purchase additional minutes at least each month that you lose any minutes you have and they terminate you service. Can this be true? Sounds like real rip off to me. Any of you Net 10 current users help me with this question?
  • Net 10 user for 2 years
I've been a Net10 user for 2 years and never paid any additional fees. I pay 10 cents a minute and 5 cents a text. I've had great service and used it while white water rafting in North Carolina and down in South Florida. The people claiming to pay fees must be using a different service. Great show, Howard.
  • Net 10
I bought a new LG phone on sale at K-Mart for $39.99. This same phone on Net 10 site is $59.99 & it came with double minutes purchased. I needed a new phone since mine was 5yrs. old. The LG also came with 300 free minutes. By going with Net 10 from my previous carrier AT&T, I'm saving $360 a year. With the minutes doubled, I'm paying $.05 per minute.
  • Tracfone
I like the ability to pay only for what I use on Tracfone, but I guess Sarah, Bob, Ron, Al and DT never had to call customer service. I had a question I wanted an immediate answer for, so I called, instead of using e-mail. I was told the wait would be "approximately 10 minutes." I was "on hold" for 2 hours, and heard their stupid, "Your call VERY IMPORTANT to us..." message 167 times," but never talked to a real human being. I had to hang up because the battery in my handset went dead. Have you ever tried working on the computer with a voice repeating,"Your call is very important to us..." every 43 seconds?
  • About Page Plus
    For Page Plus users:

    2. Are calls free when placed to other Verizon users, i.e., mobile-to-mobile Verizon users?
    3. Will I be able to keep my Verizon phone number?
    4. Will I be able to keep my Verizon phone (equipment/instrument)?
    5. Can I cancel anytime, my Page Plus enrollment?
  • To Cell
OK, Cell, so what is the name, what is the website of this 2-cent a minute all the time plan that you have? Please share!
  • Verizon
I had Verizon and had horrible customer service. They billed me twice and it took more than 6 months to get it resolved even though it was their error. They couldn't credit my account and, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, the supervisor told me to switch to another company if I was so unhappy--just remember to pay the early termination fee. Awful service. Will never use them again.
  • cell
I have already beaten all of your plans. I spend 2 cent a minute all of the time . It never expires
  • Tracfone
Love it...have used it for years with no problem and minimal $$s
  • TRACFONE
I am very happy with Tracfone. I am a low minutes/month user and for $100 I'm good for a year.
  • NET 10 IS ONLY .10 A MIN
    Nathaniel,
I don't know what your talkin about.I been on Net10 over 2 years now.NEVER paid any xtra fees or monthly service charges,I buy the prepaid cards at Walmart $30 for 300 min or $60 for 600.
Most Walmarts charge salestax but alot of truck stops like Pilots Loves or TAs
do not charge tax, depends where you go
  • Boost
Switched to Boost little over a month back. Coverage is not as good as Verizon. I fly alot and am always needing weather and local information, so hoping the unlimited internet will help. Happy so far, just coverage is not the greatest.
  • All well & good in the city, but…
…what about us in the boonies? With Verizon's purchase of Altel (CDMA) and Unicel (GSM), we're down to just Verizon and AT&T for local choices. Neither is what you'd call 'affordable' and neither has decent pre-paid service.

I have ATT prepaid with unlimited internet and it's $50/month. Now, I don't talk much so I routinely carry a $100+ balance that's just going to waste. But it's my only no-contract option that let me bring my own phone and get unlimited EDGE internet.

It stinks, because previously I was with T-Mobile in another area and it was wonderful. Same $50/month, but post-paid and got 650 min a month, unlimited nights/weekends, unlimited internet and 400 text messages.

    Pre paid is a ripoff!
  • Boost Unlimited
Their "unlimited" mobile-to-mobile calling is only to other Boost, Nextel and Sprint. I couldn't see what they charge for calls to other carriers.
  • Porting not always for Verizon
In Dec I wanted to switch to Metro PCS from Verizon and V would not let me port my number. They said that if I own it and they did. I have had the same number over 7 yrs and don't owe Verizon any money and was not even under contract anymore. So I told them to "f" off and got 4 new numbers with Metro PCS and I'm saving $110 a month.
The service is good but the people who work in the store are idiots.
  • Love TracFone
I have had TracFone for about four years now and I love it. I can enough minutes to last me for a year for $100 and they roll over if you don’t let them expire. The coverage is nation wide with no roaming. The low volume user couldn’t ask for more.
  • Virgin Mobile
I have had problem after problem with Virgin and poor/non existent customer service. I am changing to Tracfone this week. My Mom has had Tracfone for 5 years and is very please. Tracfone also has good coupons for online purchase of minutes. The Virgin Mobile so called coupons/referal codes are a headache to say the least.
  • Virgin Mobile
I have had nothing but problems with Virgin Mobile. I am switching to Tracfone this week. My Mom has had Tracfone for 5 years and is very happy with the service and the great coupons they have for online purchase of minutes. Thanks
  • Verizon really is great in every way!
I've been a V.user since 2005 and love their service (coverage), their customer service and I use 1400 min. per month, but you can change that anytime without penalty -up or down. They cover our area which is rural and anytime I've had problems, their customer service is the best. Verizon for me beats everything listed here.
  • LOVE Virgin Mobile's customer service
Went with them years ago on Clarks's recommendation and haven't looked back. Love their corporate culture -- like Southwest they're laid-back, cool, and customer-oriented. GREAT service. Other carriers are cheaper per minute now, like NET 10 above, but it's not that big of a difference to make me switch and possibly have to compromise on service. I'm still paying less than $7/month!

While with Virgin I've switched plans a few times, changed phones, and got GREAT customer service at every turn. And again, less than $7/month. Beat that, big 4!
  • TracFone Prepaid Service
TracFone is excellent, not only USA-wide, but you can call Europe, Mexico, etc. As "moderate" users, the most we ever pay is $100 per YEAR!
  • Good Coverage
All these alternative plans sound great, but the only coverage I get in my area of Texas is AT&T. How can I verify that if I change over to another company, such as mobileboost, that I will have coverage in my area?
  • Virgin Mobile prepaid is great!
My husband and I are not big cell phone users; we both have Virgin Mobile phones with prepaid service. VirginMobile automatically charges $15 per quarter per phone to our credit card, and the minutes never expire! Yes, we have cell service for $5/month each. And the coverage has been excellent for us - only places we can't get service are the mountains in Wyoming and the middle of nowhere in New Mexico (north of Tucumcari).
  • Trac Phone
I like Trac Phone for low usage. It costs about $6 per month and I don't loose minutes. I can get a year +800 minutes and flip phone for $129. I use few minutes per month; great price and free roaming anywhere in USA.
  • No Contract Cell Phones
We've used Consumer Cellular for more than twelve years. Much cheaper, excellent service and you can adjust your plan anytime you begin to exceed your minutes limit, to avoid high excess minute costs.
  • Skype Phones
I just started looking into buying a new cell phone because I am going to Mazatlian,Mexico for vacation and would like to do more traveling. The price is right for the Phone, unlimited calls, and call all over the World for $9.95 per month. It sounds too good to be true. What is the catch 22?
    Thanks
    Dorothy
  • METRO PCS
If you live in a city that has Metropcs , you should look into it.
I pre-pay each month and I can Call & Text all i want!!!!
  • NTELOS Wireless
Ntelos wireless is also an excellent carrier for unlimited if you live in VA, WV, and some parts of KY and OH. Unlmiited starts off at $39.99.
  • Cell phone service
I use Virgin Mobile which uses the sprint network. You must spend $20 every 90 days to keep phone #.Cost per
    minute .15.
  • Pre-paid cell phones
    Clark,
I can help wondering why you never mention TraFone as a pre-paid cell phone service. My wife, 16 year old daughter and myself all use one, and it has worked out great for us. They seem to work everywhere, and as far as I can tell, they are inexpensive. Recently TraFone had a promotion with a particular model which doubles your minutes for the life of the phone. We purchase 120 minutes for $29,95 and we get 240 minutes. For our purposes this is more than enough. They come with texting, a low grade camera and voice mail, along with the access to the internet. Because we don't use them a whole lot, mostly just to keep track of each other, it cost's us an average of $29.95 per month, total.
  • Tmobile
Others are correct $100 first year $10 a year after that for low usage.
  • Prepaid
check out Page Plus. Pay by the minute, can even use your Verizon phone.
  • Tracfone Bonus Codes
i love my tracfone. about $20 for 3 months. i pay for 60 minutes but always get 30 to 60 bonus minutes.

this is a great site for tracfone bonus codes.
    http://www.couponshare.com/coupons/TracFone.asp
  • Tmobile for low usage
My wife rarely uses here phone. With "Gold Rewards" it cost $10 to add another year!
  • Hi
In our neighborhood, we have Pocket Wireless that touts a $30 per month unlimited cell phone rate.
  • Prepaid Cell Phone
Clark you are absolutely correct. Net10 is ONLY ten cents a min. No sur charge or monthly charge.
  • Prepaid cell phone
T-mobile should be the best. 10cent / min if you purchase $100 which expires in 1 year instead of 6 months on Net10 plan.
  • Tracfone
Been very happy with tracfone, use less than 60 min a month, and did not set up voice mail so I can screen unwanted calls.Plenty of regular phones at hand when needed.
  • Termination Fees
Are there any methods to get out of the contract without paying the early termination fee? I heard that Verizon will let you out your contract if you call and say you just can't afford the bill anymore. I tried that with ATT and they weren't having it. They insisted I pay the $175 to terminate the contract early.
  • Verizon is The One
I'm the biggest penny-pincher ever, but I've been with Verizon prepaid plan for two years now. I tell you, it's the way to go. Honest! Trust me! Besides, Verizon just bought out Alltel. Did you know that? What does that tell you about Verizon?!
  • prepaid cell
net 10 is ten cents a minute. don't know where the guy came up with the $16/month additional fee.

another good alternative is tmobile. ten cents a minute, you use a sim card in their phones so if you go overseas you can swap the sim card out for one for the country you are in.

also if you become a "gold member", buying cumulatively or all at once $100 worth of prepaid minutes, they don't expire for a full year. so for the really low user (like me and my wife) you can use 80-90 minutes a month and have your cell phone cost you $100 a year per phone. also you can buy the 1000 minute refill cards on ebay for about $92 with no tax.
  • I did!
After doing the math last year on our plan, we switched to Virgin Mobile. We have saved $269.34 in ten months switching from Verizon to a VM pre-paid plan.
  • Net10 Costs
Howard, you stated that Net10 only costs 10 cents/minute. This is not exactly true. In addition to the 10 cents per minute, users also have to pay the service charge which wil be at least $16.67 per month. You might want to provide your listeners with complete information. By the way, I enjoy your show.
