Mar 02, 2009 -- Insourcing is hot as consumers go the DIY route

What have you changed in your life with all the bad economic news? Even those of us who are not affected -- either we're safe in our jobs or we don't carry any debt -- are making changes.

There's even a new term in the marketing world -- "insourcing" -- to encompass the idea of doing things yourself to save money instead of paying someone else to do it. An example of this would be Target's latest ad campaign.

A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 70% of us believe the current economic downturn will last at least into 2010. More than one-third of us think it will run through at least 2011 or 2012.

Nobody knows about the duration for sure, so we're really analyzing how we spend our money. Some of us are even turning DIY (do it yourself). The Washington Post reports that sales of sewing kits at Wal-Mart are up 30% in just the last few months. People are mending their own clothes instead of paying a tailor or seamstress.

Landscapers are affected too. People who used to pay someone else to tend their yard are now doing it themselves. The landscaping business is down about 7% as a result.

In yet another example, Proctor and Gamble is getting a big increase in people wanting to know how to dye their hair at home. They're specifically looking to match the color a professional already put in.

Two-thirds of us make these nips and tucks. One-third of us are doing so out of the necessity of a layoff or having our hours cut back at work.

However, insourcing may just be a temporary phenomenon pending an economic recovery.

What others are saying

  • it is actually a way of life
Frugality and sustainability are necessary. Not just because of the bad economy, but by the failure of the global economic system
  • DIY at home shows
My wife and I like to go to "Home Shows" when they come to town. But the one thing that they never seem to have is "hands on" demonstrations of how to lay tile on a wall, and things like that. I understand that these "shows" are just a big advertising display for contractors, and maybe DIY demos are discouraged because the contractors don't want people to "do it themselves", but I think that someone is missing an opportunity to draw in "Do it Yourself-ers".
  • Saving on elect. etc
I have been turning off my water heater for at least 12 hours/day (turn it on 1st thing in the a.m.)for about 2 months. Most of the time the water stays warm enough all night anyway. It cut my elec. a lot. I also just canceled my cable - watching TV shows on the internet. And I use a Virgin Mobile phone - pay $15 for 3 months - no contract.
  • Insourcing
Gee, I've been doing this all my life. All those "save money tips" you see on TV, I either already do or laugh at. People thought it "odd" we don't pay someone to do everything. I am aghast , they'd waste their $ when they could do it themselves.
  • Zardo
Hey Zardo thats one of the best post I've read in a while. AMEN
  • Insourcing
Unemployment stats do not take into consideration sole propriators that are out of work and do not qualify for unemployment. My husband used to have three employees now he is back to making home repairs or trim work by himself. After 13 years he may have to close the business completely in two months. We are doing as much as possible to cut corners. Collecting coupons, turning lights off, lowering tstat to 62 for heat, cutting our own hair. I had to find a job and $13 a week extra on my check is not going to do to much for us. I am making the same amount of money I made in 1991. But Pork n Beans used to be 4/$1 two years ago on sale now they are on sale 10/$10. I guess it doesn't look like much of a sale 1/$1
  • Joseph of the Bible
We all need to read the story of Joseph in the Bible. During the 7 years of abundance, he stored grains. During the 7 years of famine, he distributed the grain and made good profit.

Americans are just the opposite. During the good years, Americans borrow and go into deeper debt. During the bad years, they cut and save. People, learn from God's wisdom and do the opposite. Now is the time to spend money, because so many things are cheap. Now is the time to buy stocks for the long term, because it will eventually go up.
