Feb 26, 2009 -- Lifetime home phone service for $200?

Want free home phone service for life? Clark has a $200 device to tell you about that promises just that -- with no monthly fees ever!

Two years ago, the penny-pincher went on the air talking about a new VoIP product called Ooma. At that time, his staffers were speculating about how long it would take for Ooma to end up in Clark's graveyard.

Fast-forward two years and Ooma is still around -- with a new cheaper price! When Ooma first launched, it was priced around $400. Now that has dropped to a range of $200-$249 depending on where you get it. That's a price point at which Clark is willing to take the leap of faith.

The Ooma device looks like a house intercom. You plug a cable for your Internet into it; you plug your traditional landline phone into it; and suddenly you have phone service! Ooma also has a built-in processor that supposedly makes the sound quality comparable to monopoly phone service.

We'll keep you updated about Clark's adventures with Ooma.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Porting
yes, you can port your number for $39.99 or it is free when you pre-pay for a 1 year premiere subscription upgrade.
  • Portability on Ooma Phones
Do they allow you to port your existing phone number to Ooma? Can you switch back if you want to?
  • ooma phone number
I invested on an Ooma device about 3 weeks ago. My goal has been to give it a good run to see how it performs as compared to the call quality on my LAN line before I decide to port or migrate my home phone number to Ooma. After many successful, impeccable voice quality domestic, and international calls (with LAN line sound quality), I am pleased to report that I'll be firing my local phone company. Great product and very easy to install.
  • ooma home phone
whats latest on oboma phone ? can i keep my # ?
  • ooma
I bought ooma on Chark's favorable report and it's as good as he says! The other VoIP products require up-to-date software. I use Microsoft Me and ooma works great with it. The tech. support people with ooma said that is because ooma doesn't work off your software, as the others do.
  • Good, Objective, Comparison
You get a good sense of how Ooma stacks up with Magic Jack (and Vonage and Skype) at:

    http://tech.spotcoolstuff.com/internet-telephone-versus/ooma
  • Ooma revenue picture
Sell hardware for high price; have no service delivery cost (cost passed onto internet service); sell premium service early on for $100/month... this gets market share and people scared of problems for at least 1 year. I guess they get 80% sign up for that. Later introduce upgraded technology to sell more equipment (ad video later); keep 80% on service and you will last a long time… I wish I had thought of this.
  • Ooma and fax
ooma works wonderful for phone calls, much better call quality than majic jack. I haven't had any luck sending or receiving faxes on it. Their web site says it may or may not work well with faxes, I guess it depends on your internet connection. They tell me they're currently working on a solution for the fax problem.
  • ooma
Can anyone tell me how ooma handles fax transmissions both sending and receiving? Thanks.
  • Poor Customer Service
E-mailed them twice over a 4-week period. Still no reply.
  • Ooma
Does anyone know if you can accept collect calls with Ooma?
  • Customer support has been very good for me. I had an outgoing caller ID issue, and they followed up with me almost daily until resolved. Very nice people at ooma!
  • Ooma
ZERO customer support. Technology such as this is bound to have a glitch from time to time. Try getting any help from them. Isn't this one of Clark's pet peeves? Is is mine!
  • Ooma
Had Magic Jack and never really liked it or did it ever work very well. Now I have Ooma and it is awesome. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Combine this with grandcentral and google voice and you have all the features you would ever need in a phone system. Quality of ooma is 200 times better then Magicless jack
  • Ooma Response to Home Security Monitoring
With a monitored home alarm system it is best to have a landline. I have seen brinks alarm work with ooma however it is not suggested or recommended for several reasons. Most important being if the power goes out or internet is down then the alarm system will not work. Or there is always the chance that when it is required to work for some reason it just does not work with the ooma.

It is not something you should not rely on simply because there are too many variables. Ooma cannot take on any responsibility of an alarm and therfore cannot support it.
    Thank you,
    Ooma Support Team
  • Ooma
I had tried Majic Jack and had bad luck with it with a computer crash. I had dropped calls and bad reception as well. I got Ooma a couple of weeks ago and so far it is working great!
  • magick jack
Magic jack is great. I have it for 2 years now and called east canada all the time and no problems at all
  • Magic Jack
Magic Jack is a scam. I never did get it to work after calling for help many times. Their tech support is non-existent. They wouldn't refund my money. Stay away from them.
  • Ooma
Got the Ooma a week ago. I installed it myself in about 20 minutes (and I'm not really into tech). Wonderful reception--no problems making or receiving calls. Also got a free 60 day trial of their premier service--NICE. Would be great especially for people with teenagers. I am going to give up the landline and pay the $40 to port my current phone number. Will not go with the premier package at $99 a year because I don't really need all the extras.
  • Magic Jack
I bought Magic Jack and it wouldn't work for me because I have Wild Blue satellite for internet connection. Is this Ooma the same way?
  • ooma
Do we keep our original phone number?
  • CELL WORKS BEST
I Have Boost Mobile $50.00 monthly, unlimited Everything, no contracts, just buy a new card. And if your low on dough you have 90days before you lose your number. it's a cell and home phone in one..
  • ooma and security
I have had perfect success with integrating ooma with my security system. All I had to do was connect the "phone" connection to the input of my security system. There is no need to keep a landline.
  • MagicJack
I have been using MagicJack since July last year and have no problem. Make sure your internet router set up properly (giving magicjack/computer high priority) then there should be no problem
  • Ooma
I have Magic Jack, and Ooma. Paid $219 and really like Ooma, much more so than Magic Jack. Now I just keep Magic Jack to give when I have to fill out a form and don't want telemarketers calling me. Would highly recommend Ooma to anyone.
  • Majic jack
After 2 chat sessions and 2 1/2 hrs of chat doing things to my computer beyond my skill level,I had to plead to send me a new Majic Jack. I had to pay for it and supposidly I have to send the old one back with my own postage and pray for a credit and hope the new one works, Terrible tech support. Ooma may be the way.
  • voip phones
I find that Skype, which costs me $29.95 a year, allows me to make unlimited calls anywhere for free in the US and pennys to other countries. I also use a Philips cordless phone that is not connected to my computer and I can dial anywhere in the home with my my computer turned off and use it on Skype or a land phone as it has two connections for both types of calls. Or for you TMobile users, they have a niffty deal for $10 extra that will allow you a extra line using the Internet and make all the free calls you want. Just plug in your phone to it. It does not use any airtime and now you have an extra phone line for the home. Calls come through great and includes 911 service. Check it out
  • Um...
Ever hear of SKYPE? Magic Jack is a rip off. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Ooma sounds like a rip off too. Just go to your cell and dump the land line and use Skype and tell your friends and family to get on it so you can talk to them for free. I'm dumping my VoIP through TimeWarner who charges way too much.
  • Phone Power
It looks like Phone Power.com only offers ONE year deals now for the $199. I got mine last summer, TWO years, $199. Still, at $16.66 a month that great and NO problems. Oh, Denise, most of these VOIP work best with Broadband from cable companies, not DSL via a phone line. But you can still have a VOIP via a land line without a local phone. The big phone companies (AT&T< Verizon, etc) are allowing just DSL to your homes without a phone service. If they didn't they'd be losing business to the cable companies. Yes, in a power outage we have no phone service, that's another good reason to have the cell phone. If it weren't for Phone Power.com I wouldn't even have a home phone in the first place but at their low prices why not?
  • voip
How in the world is this stuff supposed to work if your internet/computer is received through your DSL landline?
  • 911
Anna, Yes, E911 is required and the address is added to local erergency services dispatchers.
  • Magic Jach
Magic jack worded great and till I had teck. problems than it worse the all the other NO !!!!!! service and your done.
again good luck with magic jack until you need service don't waste you time you can't find it.
  • www,powerphone.com
Hey Pete, What about 911? Can you make an emergency call and have them find you?
I understand that the 911 locator doesn't work on systems like that. Everyone would have to understand that 911 callers had to give CLEARLY gove the address where emergency help was needed. VYUK

  • Magic Jack
I like my magic jack.It works best when my pc is on-because that's how it was made to be used ---- (that is not an electricity waster either). I call when the phone is on the cradle -press send ,and then pick it up as it rings- the voice quality is good this way too. I like making the necessary calls from the pc and not being bothered by a cell phone- At 70 I don't need the extra expense or bother of a cell. I like making long-distance calls this easy-cheap way too. I still have the land line for my other phone. I am glad not to have to pay the long-distance fee -
  • magic jack
Magic Jack is a joke; Whenever I use it, it transmits and receives in packets of 3 words, then a pause, another 3 words, etc. A waste of money.
  • Ooma is bringing new product out
Just in case you were worried that ooma would go out of business and leave us all stranded, I see some encouragement. They are introducing a NEW setup that uses all wireless connections instead of your house wiring. They seem to be alive and well. Also, I ordered the yearly upgrade for the second line and a lot of other goodies for $8 a month to help support their efforts. If everyone kicks in, they will be around a long time. Very innovative company.
  • dooma
and like knuckle sandwich said that ooma is a ponzi scheme.half the people will get there money back, the rest will get burned. get a tombstone ready
  • Magic Jack
I don't believe Ooma! Just $200 for life? Clark you know how companies like this fail. Next year Ooma could say, "sorry we have to charge fees and such..." Magicjack is the best! Just $19 a year. I've used in now in two cities and it has worked great. Yes, every now and then, I find myself wondering if the more people join MJ, will the service get worst. At least we know if Magic Jack wants to "Jack us UP" with fees someday, Ooma is there (smile)!
  • The scam of MagicJack
I hope that OOMA is a big improvement over MagicJack. Having had MJ for almost a year was a major disappointment. Very unrealiable and terrible tech support. It was a total waste of money.
  • Magic Jack, Ooma, Broadband
I went with www.PowerPhone.com last year, broadband VOIP, pre-paid $200 for two years, 26 features including CID, UNL local, UNL LD and simultaneous ring on my cell phone when calls come to my home phone. I love it. I don't have to wait at home for someone to call back as promised, all calls come immediately to my cell phone when they call my home phone. That's different than Call Forwarding, this is SIMULTANEOUS ringing. Best of all I kept my long time AT%T home phone number and my cell phone number, all for about $8.33 a month. Not as little as those other gimmicks but reliable. And way less than the big companies.
  • Magic Jack
I read most of the comments, and for the most part, some of you might right as far as the MJ is concern, but I will say this I use it to call Barbados and Canada, and I do not have any problem, it rings from both countries too, maybe it is my high speed connection, but it works fine, sorry you guys have bad luck, use Skype or Yahoo phone. Good Luck
  • your old number
can you use your existing phone number with this Ooma system?
  • Magic Jack
I've been using the Magic Jack for about 3 months and it works well. I sometimes get bad connections on incoming calls, but other than that I have no complaints.
  • MagicJack
I bought MagicJack and it worked for almost a week then it stopped. I called their support and they had me remove all sorts of files and programs and then told me I needed to totally turn my computer off and it would work. It did work for one day, I called support again and they had me delete more programs and try the magicjack and it worked, until the next day when I turned my computer back on. Then again, nothing!!! I had told them the last time I spoke with them if it stopped working in a day or two I was going to trash it and they just said OK. So much for customer service.
  • Majic Jack
    Clark:
I purcahsed a majic jack and for the most part it does work well. However some calls to Canada get disconnected for no reason. Any ideas how to improve this or have you heard of any similar complaints.
  • Ooma and Home Security System
For the case where a home has a security system with monitoring, there needs to be either a land line or a wireless device for communication to central control. If you change to maintain a "basic" phone system with AT&T, the charge is about $18/mo plus taxes. If you want a wireless device, the cost from Brinks is $295 plus $50-90 labor to install plus an "added" monthly fee of $10 to your monthly security charge. For homes with a security system, it looks like maintaining the basic phone land line service may be the best option. Now if you integrate the Ooma with your land line and maintain the same phone number, you also will not have the caller ID feature, unless you add that feature to your basic AT&T phone service at an additional monthly fee. Some desire the added security of maintaining a land line should ones power or internet service be disrupted, although there is always ones cell phone as a backup too. In summary, if the home has a security system, it may be best to simply maintain a land line at the "basic" service charge and use ones cell phone for long distance calls. The $199 investment in Ooma for this case can provide free long distance calling in USA, still one can not eliminate that nasty AT&T monthly phone bill due to the home security system requirements.
  • Ooma pays for itself, its great.
The sound quality is great, no monthly bill, free calls anywhere in the USA, very cheap calls to countries out of USA.
A website and fourm to answer tech questions.(www.ooma.com)
The OOma is the best investment you can make, mine paid for itself in 4 months (Based on my phone bill was $50 a month with AT&T).
Even if Ooma went out of business today I have lost no money, only gained, because I have had no phone bill for 8 months. THe way it appears now, Ooma will be around for a good while. Be warned if you want a bunch of extra options there is a $99.00 a year fee.
But if you just want 1 new phone number, Caller ID, call waiting its free once you purchase the unit. I can't brag enough on Ooma, Just make sure you have a good high speed internet connection.
  • PHONE DEAL
...yes, there are alternatives...but it seems they are so wrought with problems...I think I will skip them and stay with my cable phone at $30 a month.I want something reliable, and I also have a cell...$10 a month and 10 cents a minute.....with kajeet. I do not want a method where I am forced to utilize my computer. I have had computer outs...and the cable phone still worked...my cable phone has free long distance calls to anywhere in the USA, anytime, no time limit....$30 a month.
  • Illegal use
    By Martha @ 02/27/09 12:43:57 PM

Martha, you do realize that you are not abiding by MagicJack's license agreement that says you can use it only for personal use? Using it for business is against the law..............
  • Ooma vs magicJack
I have both. The ooma was $203 including shipping at Amazon.com. Magicjack is a toy, as others have said. If you can put up with spotty voice quality, dropped calls, and noise when your computer is updating or doing something intensive then keep your MagicJack. If you want a REAL phone system with multiple phones and two numbers that has great reliable quality, then it's ooma. My magicjack wouldn't even ring one of my wireless phone setups and magicjack's answer was buy another $100 3 phone wireless set and HOPE it rings. With the ooma hub and the satelite system, I have two wireless systems hooked up. Also, I have a second number with a local number for all of our relatives in Pa that they can dial for free and call me in Ga. If anyone wants to buy my magicjack, let me know.
    Ooma is the ticket!
  • MajicJack
MagicJack is a joke! I thought it was a great product until I ordered it. First off, it never works when your computer is in sleep mode (no incoming calls). That means, you have to keep your computer fully running 24/7 and waste energy (which also means, higher electric bill). Second, 50% of the time the calls just drop when you dial a number. Third, even when I do get connected, often the sound just fades away to the point where I can not hear the other person. MJ should spend more $$ on R&D, and less on advertisement. Luckily, I was able to return it before my trial period ended.
  • magicjack
hey, Mari Ann, try a different phone. I was trying to use an office style phone and then decided to try another phone (a trimline style phone) and it worked great with the magicjack.
  • Ooma vs magic Jack
From an ooma user: There is NO comparison between Magic Jack and ooma.
ooma is more like your old phone system. Magic Jack is but a toy.
  • Magicjack
I bought magicjack over a year ago and to this day I still haven't gotten it to work. I've called and talked to three different people and they still couldn't get it to work. I just decided I got "stuck" with a lemon and threw it on my desk.
  • magicjack
I used magic jack at my office. It is great. I make a lot of long distance calls. It works very well and saves the company a lot of money. It cost me about $50.00 and $20.00 a year after that. I feel that if it goes out of business I won't be out a lot of money. The only thing is that you do have to get a new phone number, but I had not had a phone lien for 4 years, so it didn't matter to me
  • Ooma vs Magic Jack
Clark old buddy, we've been using Magic Jack now for a year and we have no complaints. I call international (with 800 calling card), no problemo ! We have it hooked into our fax machine and it works like a charm... We gave up our $40 per month landline service for a $39,99 gadget..most of the time for local stuff we use our cellphones anyway.
  • 8 year payback
    When compared to MagicJack.

    I'll pass, thanks
  • voip
I think I'll stay with Magic Jack, coz they have a $20.00 renewable, ongoing income, and if they go out 20 bucks, Ouw is they oyjer going to stay in business if no cash flow.
  • voip
i'm a happy magic jack user ($40 first year, $20 per year after). If they go out of business, I'll only be out the current year's fee and will have used all my value until then. they assign you a local number in your area code & it works great too.
  • Ooma customers
Eventually Ooma will sell as many of these systems as they're going to. At that point, there will be no income for Ooma. They will have to go out of business, leaving all their customers in the lurch.

Ooma is similar to a Ponzi scheme. Current customers are being serviced by money from new customers. When new customers run out, Ooma runs out.
  • Ooma Price
Just purchased it from Newegg (Great online vendor) for $199. Both the hub and the scout (satellite) as a system for this one price. Can't wait to turn off landline. I hope Clark tries to port a landline number. I've heard there have been problems in the past with this. That's what I'm going to try and do.
  • Price
Actually, according to their website, it looks like the device costs $249.
