Feb 17, 2009 -- Automakers asking for another infusion of cash

Major restructuring is coming for GM and Chrysler as both automakers continue to ask the government for more money to survive. In this case, "restructuring" is a euphemism for saying that we the taxpayers will foot the bill for their bailouts. The final total cost is unknown, but rest assured that we will be "partners" with them in an effort to save auto production in America.

Clark was opposed to the initial round of auto bailouts, and he's also opposed to the latest GM and Chrysler request for bailout money.

The whole question of what qualifies as a domestic automaker is misleading; Both GM and Chrysler import some cars built abroad and slap their nameplates on them. Likewise, foreign automakers have domestic assembly plants and employ American workers. Nissan makes cars in Tennessee; Mercedes makes them in Alabama; BMW in South Carolina; and Honda in Ohio, to name just a few examples.

In capitalism, the most efficient provider should survive, but these government subsidizes actually allow the inefficient to survive. That's exactly why a bailout subverts the intent of capitalism.

It may seem like we're helping to save American institutions. But what kind of example does it set for the rest of the world, when other countries are considering their own bailouts? The French are bailing out just about every industry known to man. Before you know it, they'll be bailing out pastry chefs!

And then there's the "what about me" syndrome. Clark is always hearing from small business owners asking, "Where's my bailout?" That's the hazard you create in capitalism when you pick winners and losers based on the strength of their lobby in Washington, as we're doing with the automakers. It creates a kind of "bailout envy" with a severe ripple effect.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Have It All Your Own Way
Bankruptcy? Fine, but the only establishment large enough to handle that is the government. Be prepared to spend $100 Billion on that.

100 years behind Europe? What choice do we have. We don't have near the population density they do. It isn't even remotely financially viable to change our infrastructure yet.

The reason they are back asking for more money is because the government gave them less money than they needed and told them to come back.
  • Automaker bailouts - just a bailout of the UAW
I view these bailouts as nothing more than the Liberal government paying back the United Auto Workers and their lobbyists for supporting them prior to and during the election. Even if we (taxpayers) bail out the UAW and their job bank and health care services, how can GM get people to buy these UAW cars?
  • Long-Term Thinking
Build PHEVs with zero emissions as well as bicycle and walking routes, plus light and high speed rail. Not individual vehicles. We are 100 years behind Europe!
  • Bailouts?
    Let them all sink.
  • Bail Out
The car companies can bail out themselves.

Easy...Build quality cars that get super gas mileage, at a price Americans can afford. Not brain surgery.
  • A modest proposal
The problem at the Big Three is the huge cost of taking care of the hundreds of thousands of retirees and their family members through pensions, medical benefits, and what not.

I suggest GM organize a hit squad to go around and either force these parasites to go back to work, or kill them off.
  • Car's
Chrysler, Ford, Chevy, back in my younger days I learned that a hot performing car could be any of the three. The old long stretching 383,440 wedge along with the Chevy 409,396,427 and the Ford 390 were something else, pure get it on down the road type of engines, Hell the ole 426 hemi that me and couple of buddies shoehorned into a
55 Plymoth Savoy was a monster, but that was the days of .33 a gallon gas, kinda dating myself. But the cost of insurance and the price of gas drove those day away. Then there was not much difference between the three they just turn to junk and no one wanted to buy one when a little car from japan showed up and got good gas mileage and was snappy to boot. Who needed a a big engine when a little four banger was cheaper and with a little tricking out, just as quick. My point is, Chrysler, GM, and to some extent Ford gave up and would not compete for their home market with the low quality cars they tried to pawn off on us. Maybe bankruptcy would wake them up better than sucking on the Government teat, after all, they should be weened by now.
  • NO more auto bailout please
In a related opinion, I find it amusing that lately I see a lot of local commercials with the “big three” dealers claiming their product is superior in every class against the foreign automakers. That’s funny cause all the major pricing/appraisal indexes such as Edmonds, Consumer Reports, KBB, and so on show that their product has rarely stood up to the foreign autos. It’s time to let them fail. CNBC called it right on back when the big 3 showed up to Washington the first time. They said they will all be back asking for more money in just a few months. And what a shocker here we are. I feel for the displaced workers and their families but there are hundreds of other hard hit industries taking a beating right now with no bailout money and displaced workers. Time to let capitalism run its course instead of applying life support to a corpse that’s been dead for years. Yes its going to hurt, the market will take another beating along with unemployment but how much are we going to shovel into this abyss (IMHO).
  • Where will the money go??
Each of the big three plan to do major plant exspansion in Mexico while laying off U.S. workers and having us pay for their new plants. Their plans involve employing thousands of people in Mexico. I wish that someone would make a big stink about this. Could one politician ask them if they plan to increase international hiring while laying off here?
  • Auto Bailout
The only reason the Democrats running our government are bailing out the automakers, is because of the UAW.
The UAW has been carrying water for the Democratic Party for years. Democrats now control congress as well as the Presidency. Democrats have no morals and will tax and spend us to death if they have to in order to save their slimey buddies in the UAW. Democrats don't care a fig for GM, Chrysler or Ford. It's all about saving the UAW.
