Feb 06, 2009 -- More websites for job-hunting in a specific field

Are you unemployed and looking for work? Clark recently saw some new suggestions in The Boston Globe about job sites that can aid in your search.

Screen-scraper sites like SimplyHired.com and Indeed.com both aggregate content from all the traditional job sites like Monster and Yahoo! Jobs. They're one-stop shops that the traditional job sites hate, but you should love because they make job hunting a cinch.

In addition, The Boston Globe recommends several specialty sites for specific fields. BioSpace.com is geared toward the science and biotechnology fields; Idealist.org focuses on the non-profit charity world; and for those who are 50 years or older there's a site called WorkForce50.com.

While the computer is a great tool for job hunters, Clark thinks personal contact is especially important during a period of unemployment. Too often, we hide behind the computer and that's just not enough.

The consumer champ calls networking "a lost art" and encourages job seekers to attend networking groups at community centers or houses of worship. There you can meet others who are also looking for work and share leads, polish your resume and more.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Resumes Formatting for Internet sending
I just learned that when you send your email over the internet you need to make changes to your Resume or Cover Letters.

    1. REMOVE all under lining from your resume or cover letters. Under lining, will accidently blend the line with the words above it. This creates a blurring of your text. I have seen this on various government pages. Many hiring sorting scans will junk mail or delete your resume as problemed or unreadable.

    2. Always put phone number into a ( )
enclosures like this: (area code-222-3344) this keeps your phone number from being chopped up on the receiving end of your resume sent.

    3. NEVER USE HOLLOW BULLETS. Only use FULL BLACK DARK DOT BULLETS. Hollow bullets are read as the number zero 0 or the letter o. These can be broken up, just like a phone number without the ( ) used.

    4. Another thing is using your address. Only put an email address and a phone number to reach you. Why? Well some job are judging on where you live. I always recommend you purchase a P.O.Box in an EXPENSIVE neighborhood where you live. Use this for your job search.

    5. People are attracted to wealth. If it looks rich and beautiful it must be good. Dress a step ABOVE, what the job calls for. Dress more like the decision makers at the interviews. Also wearing the color green is good too.(Don't dress like an Irish elf)People are known to lend money more often to those who wear green applying for a loan. This theory should also carry over to being hired, since money is on the mind of the interviewer who hires someone.
