Feb 05, 2009 -- Beware of bait-and-switch when buying cameras online

RIP-OFF ALERT: Clark has a new warning about the online sale of cameras and other electronics. The attorney general of the state of Texas has brought charges against 2 online retailers accused of "unlawful bait-and-switch schemes."

Consumers who would make a purchase would receive refurbished, broken or used gear that was advertised as new! Worse still, once word got around about the sites to avoid, the people behind the sites would simply set up other websites with different names so they could continue ripping people off.

Clark has some advice for those who are going to buy on the Internet. First, stick only to sellers that have multiple positive ratings -- not just one or two glowing postings from family and friends. You can use Epinions.com to vet out potential vendors or Google their name plus the words "rip-off" or "scam" to see what kind of gripes are out there in cyberspace.

Many times Clark is willing to pay more to buy from a reputable seller.

Second, pay only with a credit card -- not a debit card or check. With a credit card, you have the right to dispute the charge if your merchandise never shows up or is not what was advertised.

Remember, a deal is not always a deal, particularly if you're dealing with hoodlums.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • BBB ratings for epinions.com, shopping.com and resellerratings.com
After reading this article I read the comment "By Magnolia S @ 06/10/09 12:38:51 PM." She recommends a site called www.resellerratings.com. After looking at the site I checked it out using the Better Business Bureau's (BBB) website. BBB's Reliability Report for All Enthusiast Inc (the company that owns the www.resellerratings.com site) gives it B rating. Even though it is not a "BBB Accredited Business," they show that there have been 0 complaints about All Enthusiast Inc in the last 36 months.

I was shocked when I tried to check out www.epinions.com with the BBB. (This site was actually recommended in Clark's Article. The first BBB search returned no results for the web site URL "www.epinions.com." I used the physical address and phone number that "epinions" provides on their website for my second BBB search. The Result was "Shopping.com," it has the same phone number and street address but is on the 3rd Floor of the building instead of the 5th.

The BBB Reliability Report for Shopping.com gave the business an "F." You can use the following link to read the report and please notice that it provides Epinions address on the 5th floor as an additional location.

I will avoid using www.shopping.com and www.epinions.com until they have achieved a much better rating from the BBB.
  • Also check this site too....
Epinions is good about helping you find merchandise, but what if you want to check the reliability of online vendors?

http://www.resellerratings.com has a way to do just that. Unfortunately, not many know about it and it needs to grow. It's a good idea for everyone to participate and add your opinion. What I really like about resellerratings is that you have to enter an invoice number when you post a review. This helps to prevent faked reviews or disgruntled employee reviews.

As always, don't solely rely on the site but it is at least a start.

Other than that most of the time I resort to using Amazon almost exclusively for other vendors. It has an amazing protection program and that is VERY helpful indeed.
  • Feb 05, 2009 -- Beware of bait-and-switch when buying cameras online
The thieves in the story lying about the the equipment that they are selling is not an example of bait and switch. Bait and switch is advertising one item, being "out of stock" when you come in, and talking you into another item.
  • Bait & switch
Make sure to verify that when you place an order online you are buying what you think you're buying by using the manufacturers model #. I got burned once when I ordered a record player/cd/radio combo and then it turned out that what was shipped was a different model entirely different. To add insult, the website "Twister.com" had some convuluted return policy that made it futile to return it. So just because you see a nice photo online be prepared when you place the order.
  • broadway photo
about 5 years ago i ordered a digital camera from these crooks. they immediately charged my credit card for the approximate $300 cost. I called them when the confirm email said that the camera was "ordered" and they were very vague on when i would actually receive it. this was also a grey market (non u.s. warranty) product. I immediately cancelled the order. They threw a fit when i did cancel it, threatening to not reverse the charge, etc., but they finally backed off when i just told them i would dispute the charge and not accept the product even if they did ship it. buyer beware, know your rights and always use a credit card.
  • Too good to be true
With online camera purchases if the price seems too good to be true - quite a bit lower than the next nearest low price - then it is 99% likely a scam, no matter how legitimate the website might "seem". All sorts of interesting stories on Google about the fake internet shops in NYC that are just empty slum warehouses, etc.
  • Excellent!
This is great. Broadway Photo is a complete joke.
