Jan 30, 2009 -- Free online dating services

Online dating services have proven to be very popular, but they typically cost money to join. Until now. There are 3 new players in the market offering free online dating services:

DownToEarth.com
PlentyofFish.com
OKCupid.com

The latter seems geared to a younger demographic, so Clark has volunteered our producer Joel as a guinea pig to post an OKCupid profile and see what kind of bites he gets! Look for a full report coming from Joel in the near future.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • dating
Any dating service is only as good as those who participate in it.
  • Christian site
A good, free, Christian site is ChristianDatingForFree.com. I have looked at several free and not-so-free sites, and this one is my favorite. It has nice features like chat rooms and a chat forum. Any scammers are banned very quickly. The search feature is really detailed. One down side is that it doesn't automatically match you with someone...you just have to browse based on your search settings.

I have met several nice guys on the site, and I am regularly communicating with one of them. While I don't know that anyone I've met is Mr. Right, I'm enjoying getting to know new people. If I find the "one" I'll post an update!
  • YouDate.net
My favorite dating site, dating service is YouDate.net. You can actually see a members live video and hear their voice if you have a webcam or at least use their instant messeneger.
  • Match,com; J-date.com
Don't accept the first price quoted. Ask if there are any "specials". I've been given 30% off their package prices in both instances!
  • Stay away from SFF
If you are over 50, one of the first sites that will popup is Senior FriendFinders. Tried it, all I saw was arguing and lists of people who scam others. Not a good place for those over 50 to meet if you are looking for a match
  • another good one
DiveIntoThePool.com is a great new site, pretty much spam free
  • You forgot to mention another good one
There is a 4th website worth mentioning, http:/www.promatching.com Registration process is simple, contacting is free and so far not received any spams. I guess because it is accessible only few countries. So far, so good.
  • Great sites
I love free online dating services another great one is thehotspotguide.com It has probably the most free dating features out of any dating service online.
  • Met my husband on POF
I loved online dating and could weed out the not so nice men first. I felt safe and it saved a great deal of time. I went with match.com, yahoo.com and plentyoffish.com in December 2006 and met my husband the end of March 2007 and we married in February 2009. He is my soul mate and we are very happy together. By the way, I'm in my late 40's and he is in his early 50's.
  • Plenty of Fish has a bad reputation
did some googling on plenty of fish.
It seems the site has a very bad reputation.

According to my research on people's comments they ban people for any and every reason.

Say something the moderator does not like and you are banned.

According to my research; I recommend you do more research and then remove Plenty of Fish from the free dating sites recommendation.
  • No Luck
i live ina small city and only about 10-15 people are available at the free online dating websites. Out of these 10-15 people only abour 2-3 have photos available. I have had no luck!
  • Atlanta based Free Dating Site
Newdate4You.com . This is another very nice Free dating site. I have used it. It's pretty nice and clean.
    Above all, it's all Free.
  • Ok Cupid / POF / DTE
I have tired all these and I have to say that I really like OK Cupid and Plenty of Fish. They both seem to have more to offer and really some fun stuff too. OK offers fun tests and fun quizes that you can take and also has questions that you CAN answer if you want to find a good match for you. There are 'Woo' you can send. There is just a lot of different things you can do.

POF I think is great also. Met some really nice people out there. That one seems like is has a wide rage of ages on there where as OK has the younger crowd.

I have tried them all tho. EHarm. Match. Yahoo. All different sites, but still, for free, these offer just as much if not more.
  • Not all pay sites are bad
I'll be attending the wedding of my friend in early April. He met his fiancee on match.com so I suppose there are some success stories out there.
  • Miss Ya'
The radio station in Pittsburgh changed it'a format to all money talk so you are no longer on here!
  • OK Cupid and Plenty of Fish
I've tried the pay dating sites like Match and even eHarmony... but found that they are pretty much a ripoff.

I recently tried the free alternatives, starting with Plenty of Fish (POF). The signup part was easy, but just dont try and post ANY email address, website, IM name, or anything personally identifiable because their 'automated system' will delete your account and ban you from the site. I found that to be pretty lame, since I just listed a website I have my photography on.

I'm currently on OKCupid, and am thus far enjoying it. It's very full-featured and there seems to be an active user community. I've met and been on dates with a few women from there. I recommend OKCupid.

Bottom line is... pay sites have an incentive NOT to match you, because the longer they string you along, the more money they get. Think about it.
  • online dating
Interesting topic. Can you mention reputable dating sites for those over 50 - free or not, as the best ones would be the ones that are a good value (deliver honest, well intentioned, and truly available matches), not just the cheapest. In fact, this is one area where you might get what you pay for. Who wants a guy who is shopping for a woman on the cheap?
  • Free online dating sites
I was VERY happy with OKCupid.com. I met my soulmate on there after meeting several people. None of them were creepy, or alarming. We've been dating six months, but I'm convinced it's a lifetime match!
  • OKCupid
OKCupid definitely draws in primarily the 18-32 age range, but it is still a great dating site, with a lot of fun features. It worked for me--I'm getting married this summer to my match!
  • dating sites
