Jan 30, 2009 -- New Honda Insight hybrid comes with wallet-friendly price tag

Honda is preparing to roll out a new version of its Insight hybrid in April 2009 that promises to be a good investment from day one of ownership. No official word yet on the price tag, but the new Insight is expected to sell for somewhere in the range of $17,000-$19,000.

Compare that the average price tag of a new car at $27,000!

Unlike the original Insight, the redesigned model will have 4 doors and plenty of room. Some people are comparing its look to that of a second-generation Toyota Prius. Expect the new Insight to get around 41 mpg.

Will the new Insight help Honda wrestle the hybrid market back from Toyota? We'll keep you posted…

we have a accent it gets 42 to 44 miles to the gallon on reg gas and we paid 8 thousand for it better than 10 thousand I herd a battery for a hybrid is 5000 bucks is it true ? I love my accent.
  • Alternative cars
How does CNG vehicle cost break down in comparisson.
  • Hybrid Schmybrid
Go to www.fueleconomy.gov & check out a 1995 Honda Civic VX's mpg. We've achieved nothing.
  • Prius in mountains
Jeff has doubts about a Prius in Mountains. Let me tell you as a 3 year Prius owner, DON'T WORRY! I drive over the passes at both ends of California and pass everyone I want to. It sails up 6% grades, even when it is loaded
  • 37-38 MPG with 2007 Chevy Malibu
To my surprise when I bought my Chevy Malibu 36,000 miles ago, I found that it did much better than the estimated 33 MPG on the highway… I easily get 37 to 38 MPG on the freeway at 75MPH +/- without any special tricks! On the 26 miles back and forth to work between Snellville and Norcross I get 27MPG. It is beyond me why more people don’t consider this $17,500 car made in America as a much better deal : )
  • Where did the Echo go
My company owns two Toyota Echo's. Both are 2005 models and get about 38 mpg. It's not a hybrid! It only cost about 12,000! Why did these great gas cars go? Why does everyone think you have to have a hybrid to get gas mileage that good? Maybe Toyota had to get rid of it so they could roll out the very expensive Prius that doesn't have much better mpg.
  • Mountains? Hills? Think twice about battery only
I live in western Colorado and I would never trust a car like the Prius for driving over the mountains to Denver. This new Honda Insight seems like a great car for me. It combines the reliability and power of a gasoline engine for long trips over steep terrain with the economy of electric assist for short trips around the neighborhood.
  • Insight
I looked online, but had a hard time judging how many people could fit in this COMFORTABLY. (3 adults between 5'10 and 6'). Any ideas?

    Thank you.
  • Prius drive
The Prius can run on its electric motors alone, when the battery charge is sufficient and the power demand is modest. It does burn gasoline, both for propulsion and for battery charging, but not all the time.
  • Toyota hybrids
So Neil Prius does not burn gas?
  • Gas Burner
This is an electric assist Hybrid, ala every other hybrid avalable in the US not made by Toyota. If the vehicle is moving the gas is burning. Still in for 1 when it comes out. Basicly a Honda Fit with Prius body design, and a 3 thousand dollar premium. I am in for one.
  • New Honda
Is it plug-in or one of those old gas burners?
