Jan 30, 2009 -- Boxee.tv a virtual program guide for free online TV content

Watching free TV content using your Internet connection sounds great in theory. But have you tried to actually find the programming you want to see?!

Enter Boxee.tv, a new website that serves as an online program guide by letting you know what content is available on the 'Net.

Boxee essentially compiles all the free content that's out there and puts it in one easy interface on your computer screen…so you don't have to go looking for it. You simply click on a network's icon on your computer screen -- CNN or CBS, for example -- and then you're watching their footage for nada.

Want to then get that content on your living room's big-screen TV? Most of today's flat-screens are built so that you can run a wire from your computer directly to your TV.

Clark thinks Boxee is on track to revolutionize television. The pay TV providers should be quaking in their boots!

What others are saying

  • Boxee.tv via Linux
I am no great computer geek, but I have managed to install Ubuntu on all my computers. Pretty straight forward and they have an excellent support forum for low tech people like me.
  • Boxee on my AppleTV
I have been running Boxee on my AppleTV for the last 2 1/2 months and it has been great. I wish I could surf the net with it but other than than, I love it.
  • Alpha = testing
Boxee is in alpha, ie it is not at a final release status & is likely to contain bugs. Using it at this point is for the purpose of reporting bugs to the developer. Expect problems. Alpha is followed by beta & then the final release.
Ubuntu is a Linux distibution. Intrepid Ibex is the latest release of Ubuntu.
  • boxee for mac == miro for PC?
I don't have a mac or linux box, so I don't have direct experience with this app. However, it appears to be approx the same philosophy as Miro: www.getmiro.com
  • boxee
While Boxee is available for Mac OSX, it is indeed available for the PC as well, just not the Windows OS. It is available for Linux operating systems. I have it installed on one of my PC's & I'm running Linux Mint.
  • This is great!!
One of these days, I hope to drop cable.
  • boxee.tv
I tried to install and use it on my Mac and it locked up on me twice. I'm no computer expert, but it seems way too complicated for me to use right now.
  • Way too complicated for moi
I have Linux. If you are not a programmer you are up the creek.

You better know what Ubuntu and Intrepid is. I don't, so no Box TV for me.
  • yes there is a pc verson
I signed up for the beta testing of the pc version and received the link within 2 days.
  • Boxee.tv
I was talking with my son, who is a A/V - computer expert. He explained that the Boxee.tv is linking to a streaming video application.
As with all information that is available via the internet, you are limited by the bandwidth available at the time you are accessing or downloading the data, that is webpages that contain text and images and subpages that may contain streaming video and or audio or other graphics and Java forms and programs and the possibility of lurking malware.
  • Talk by the founder
The founder of Boxee has a fascinating talk (approx. 5 minutes) up on Youtube about the service and where it's headed in the future.

  • Not MAC only, also available for Linux
I just took a look at their website and it looks like they support Linux as well as Macs. They also have a limited release of a test version for Windows.
