Jan 29, 2009 -- Credit scores available for free

Credit scores used to be a tightly controlled secret. That guardedness allowed some lenders to take advantage of African Americans especially with higher rates of interest when they would go for loans. But the new democratization of credit scores means shame on you if you don't know what's going on with your credit and your credit score.

Clark suggests using Quizzle.com, CreditKarma.com or Credit.com to get your free credit score. (Editor's note: The scores offered by these 3 services are not the official FICO score, but rather an approximation of it.)

Interestingly, Clark can no longer get his free credit score. Why? It's an unintended consequence of his beloved credit freeze!

And, remember, the only place to get your free credit report once a year is AnnualCreditReport.com. Accept no imitations!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • FREE FICO scores
Used Clarks site to get printable versions of all 3 credit reports. (YEAH)! Now, I'd like to know my FICO score(s), but I don't wanna pay a fortune. Clark suggests 3 places, but I'm leary on all but Quizzle, since he hasn't tried the others yet. Not to mention Quizzle is NOT the ACTUAL FICO score, it's an "approximation". Depending on several things, that approximation COULD greatly differ from the actual score.
  • FICO
Quizzle worked for me. CreditKarma wouldn't accept my email address. Credit.Com wanted to sign me up for a monthly fee. So, everyone, try Quizzle.
  • you can't get your real score,... yourself!
I've done alot of work on this the past few days and here's what I found out. You can take this advise to the bank... your score is not available to you. You can get your credit report for free by going to annualcreditreport.com. Most people like to do 1 of the credit bureus every 4 months - that makes sense. Your credit score, is not included for free. You always have to pay for it. You canNOT get your Experian score yourself. You can "buy" your Vantage score through one of their many products, but Vantage score is crap. Maybe it will make you feel better by knowing your Vantage score is a somewhat accurate score... give or take 100 points in either direction (yeah, seriously!!) The myfico score is not your FICO score. It is extrememly misleading. it's just like Vantage - just an estimate, with clever tricky naming. SCAM!!!
  • Credit Scores
I have repeatedly had problems attempting to get my scores from Credit Karma. They keep telling me to go to the e-mail and there was no e-mail even in junk(thought it might have been diverted. This is what you get after entering your info? Please quit endorsing this site. This is a farce.
  • CreditKarma
Simple and easy! Good, interesting resource.
  • Transunion
Help! I ran my credit report through AnnualCreditReport.com., and received a report through Transunion.
All I received was all my past and current accounts, pmt. history, etc., but it did not show any type of score.
    Am I missing something??
Perhaps I should try Creditkarma as Glen did, since Transunion wanted $7.95 to give me my score. I thought it was for free.
    Any advise?
  • WaMu Chase online banking shows FICO
I signed my wife up for WaMu (Chase) online banking the other day and her FICO score - 801 (lucky her!) - shows up on the main page.

I've been with WaMu online banking for ages and mine doesn't show, so I used Credit Karma instead. It shows a little lower than I'd expect - 755 when I'd estimated it would be in the 780s - but I can live with a general idea.
  • creditscore
very disapointed to hear all the complaints about fico score !it's there to help company screw you!! howard i can not believe you would reccomend this site to anyone, where is the all mighty obama on this matter.it's mine why in hell should i have to pay for it!!greed that's all this country is about, screw the little guy coming & going ! it is a wonder they even let you die if your fico score is not high enough.
  • credit score
creditkarma is great! Never asked for money.
  • Annualcreditreport.com
This has been a most frustrating situation. I have talked to 3 idiots in India with EquiFax who cannot help me and sat through numerous automated systems connected with annualcreditreport.com. I still do not have a free credit report. Their system will not let me view the report. What an enormous waste of my time to get access to something that is LEGALLY my right to see.
  • report
I went to annualcreditreport.com like it states above on site filled in the info for the free report like it says and it linked me to a paid site. It said if you want a free report you have to click AnnualCreditReport.com So you go back to that which is the same site that redirected me to the pay for report site. Why is this happening????
  • Getting a FICO score, even if you are willing to pay for it
I have searched many sites looking for JUST my fico score. Every site I was in wanted to sell you something other than or along with the FICO score. The one I went to first was MYFICO.com. No luck. That site also wanted to sell me a "free credit report". By the way, I you have frozen your report, you are back to having to make phone calls to get to your report, even with an assigned password. The credit bureaus have apparently figured out how to make accessing either a major difficulty.
  • Credit Scores
An FYI for those out there about to do a refi or purchase a home and want to make sure there credit scores are as expected. I have been in the mortgage business and just today applied for a refi of my home. I had a free credit score from WAMU (now chase) I had another from quizzle, and another from Barklays Bank. These are numbers that come out of someones posterior! Quizzle shows me at 767, Wamu had me at 787 source Transunion. I call they say it came from credit bureau, I call credit bureau they say lenders make their own scores. Just a bunch of B.S. It gives you an idea but my actual scores this time were 706 to 729. 2 years ago my scores varied from 640 to 740!!! All bureaus had correct info. It is amazing to me and I have had to counsel people on credit. Just wanted to vent and give people information they might be able to use. P.S. I am paying an addition 1/2 point on my loan because of the difference in score. Thats $1247.50 in real dollars.
  • Thank You!
Quizzle and CreditKarma are great sites. Even if its not an 'official' credit score, it sure is nice to get an idea. With Quizzle, you get to view your credit report as well.
  • annualcreditreport and creditkarma
Watch, the first screen that comes up askes you to pay with bright colors look for the muted no thanks just the report and you'll see your report for free. Karma site is awesome giving a score and allowing you to see what might happen if you apply for a credit card or loan etc. Thank you for the great info.
  • Quizzle score
Checked my credit score at Quizzle and had no problems at all. I like the budget feature and was able to print my credit report. Only problem is a couple creditors did not show up on there. I guess they are MIA for now. Thnx Clark!!
  • college savings
Is "Upromise" a safe legimate site to register for money back for college savings?
  • Quizzle
Loved the Quizzle site. Great information to start. Was as advertised and I did not have to reach for my wallet!
  • "Free" Credit Reports
Free? I tried getting the report from Equifax; entered my personal informatin and supposedly produced my report but had to log in to view it. I saw no way to register for an ID and passwod; per teh Equifax site "You automatically become a member when you purchase any of our products to help you understand your credit health." Free> Not!
  • Is this a fraudulant site?
I'm really disappointed that Clark Howard promotes this site. I've had such cxonfidence in his honesty. I entered my personal information and got nothing. Is muy personal information being used? WHAT ARE THESE SECURITY CODES ALL ABOUT? What if your vision is limited?
  • Experian Credit Score - $5.95 = VantageScore ?
I willingly paid $5.95 for my credit score from Experian. When I got it, it is called a "VantageScore" and it is NOT a number based on the scale we all know of 300-850 which we are all too familiar with. To quote the document "VantageScore is the credit industry's first credit score developed jointly by the 3 national credit bureaus. This innovative new approach to credit scoring simplifies the credit granting process for consumers and creditors..."

With this new knowledge, how do we know which scoring system is being used? Are they phasing out the old one (range of 300-850). This one has a different range of 501-990. Ugh!
  • WAMU free FICO score
I was notified that as of Mar.1 Wamu will no longer give free fico scores as Wamu will then be Chase .
  • idenitity fraud
Equifax made us think after we were a victim of identity fraud that they would protect us for a small fee each month. huge lie, we had 2 collections just show up that I found by checking our file myself. and getting help from them is like pulling teeth. No protection there. but someway they manage to sucker us for even more coverage.Still do not have all the problems cleared up. they are a huge pain. if I ever get this one last thing off of our credit report they are history. I would not advise Equifax to anyone. But I don't have a clue where to go from here. it is a Scary word. No protection. unless your are a criminal. this creep has been having fun with our credit for 2 years. Beware and Be very careful in your personel information. It was also very strange to me that all 3 credit companies, Equifax,Experian, and Transunion all said different.
  • Annual Credit report
I was able to view my Equifax and Experian reports for free, no problems at all. TransUnion said it was not able to verify my information (i.e. that I was really who I am) so it said to call to receiver the report.

I think the people who're saying that it's not really free are unknowingly choosing "add-ons" to their report, such as an actual FICO score or a monitoring program. All three advertise such features, which are not part of the free credit report, very prominently and the dull, plain "No thanks" button is often at the bottom. So just read these pages carefully and you should be able to get your free report as well.

    Good service. thank you, clark!
  • Credit Report
I went on line using the link above to receive my free report. I received it and paid my $7.95 to receive my FICO score (not reading that it was free from Eqifax, my stupidity). My husband then wanted his but after accessing Equifax on line, my info came up and it made it look like I was being charged again. I cleared my cookies, and deleted history and went back on entering my husband's information again. AGAIN my info came back up and it looked like I was being charged again. I called so many numbers and could not get a HUMAN. I am furious!!!!!! I wrote letters to both Equifax and Annual Credit Report and will go to my attorney general if it shows up on my credit card more than one time. The web sites are useless as are the phone numbers. I AM HOT!!!!
  • FREE credit report
So far, I've tried Quizzle and now, Annual Creditreport..and.. they will not
give report numbers without FIRST giving money upfront FIRST !!!!i THINK YOU ARE GIVING OUT FALSE INFO.....
  • Annualcreditreport.com
The site is great. Clark you know your stuff. Thanks for the tip.
  • spam
    you get spam !!!
  • Quizzle is awsome.
that pretty much sums it up. Very simple, and useful. Fairly accurate, and eye-opening.
  • Quizzle experience
I would recommend you think twice before using this site. The report it spits out, after much difficulty, is not official, does not have a report # which you need to file a dispute on credit bureau information, and the housing info is not accurate, either. Way more info is requested than needed to verify who you are and I feel STUPID for giving it to them. CH is in the entertainment business.
  • credit scores
Backing away and looking at this whole credit scheme makes me furious. These thugs rob - establish my credit rating for nothing, without my permission, and then sell it to many other ruthless agencies. They try to hold me up financially and basically exploit from us wherever they can. They load my mailbox up with crap that if someone rips off can destroy my credit. If our credit get screwed up we have to unwind it and prove to them we are not at fault. If we want to know what our score is we pay! Yes, then another thug comes along and offers protection of my credit scores for a price! This profiles like a crime family operation. The whole thing proves Corporate America has paid to establish a political price on our heads. It is then legal to declare open season on John Doe. It is time for Americans to take charge, it is our country and does not belong to these thugs!
  • Quizzle
I went to Quizzle and had no problem getting a credit score that only differed by three points from a credit report that I got a couple of weeks ago in the refinance of my house.
  • No AnnualCriedtReport.com problems here
I have a credit freeze on all three companies and have been able to retrieve my reports online without any trouble. I personally felt it risky to go to the other sites and jump through hoops to get a free fico score. When you request your reports, pay a small fee at that time to get your FICO. it's worth the few bucks and less headaches.
  • Credit score
These are NOT free, which you are not told until you have entered extensive information.
  • Free Credit Score
In the article it gives three places to get a free score.....I tried all three but Credit.com......wanted a credit card number to purchase something, but I had good results from Quizzle and CreditKarma......I don't know why Clark said all is free..
  • Free Credit Reports
You can phone AnnualCreditReport.com at 1-877-322-8228 and they will send your reports in the mail in 2-3 weeks. It is simple. Be sure to listen carefully to the prompts. It takes about 3 mnutes.
  • Credit Reports
Rcvd all three Credit Reports free (although I had to request Equifax's twice) but each wanted to charge for a Credit Score.
  • free once yearly credit report
I went to Clark's suggested link of Annual Credit Report.com. The first one of the goup (Equiax says they charge for a copy of the report? Is there a way to truly get a free yearly version???

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Patti Wilson
  • Something for nothing gets you nothing...
According to Steven Snyder, the bankruptcy information Guru, the only true and reliable way to get your accurate credit scores is to use MyFico.com (http://www.myfico.com/12/Home.asp). It will cost you about $48, but at least you will get what you pay for. He is right. I made the mistake of trying "Free Credit Report.com" and went through hell trying to cancel their service after finding out free is not free. Don't believe everything you read and hear.
  • Credit Score
Will my credit scores go down because two banks closed my credit cards because I had not used their cards in quite a number of years?
  • Credit Scores
All I want to know is the ranges between score levels,i.e., what is the lowest number you can have and still have excellent credit.
  • credit report
what does it mean they have a freeze on my report?
  • credit scores
Experian does not permit purchase of their score anymore (the true FICO score, not one of many bogus others they try to sell). Clark means well but as some have noted, he doesnt cover all details of this area. Check Steven Snyder's website via google search. Steve clears up a lot of myths re-consumer credit and has a newsletter, I beleive its free.
  • AnnualCreditReport
I tried to get my report. it told me there was a frezze on my account and I needed to mail them my SS#, The Deed to my house, copy's of bills, Birth Certificate.....I could not believe it. Who would mail all of that important information. (?) and YES, it was AnnualCriedtReport.com....I have printed out the information. I wihs you would report tham.
  • annualcreditreport.com
I tried several times to get my free reports but even giving them the correct accout numbers didn't get me a report. Very frustrating!
  • Quizzle
After going through all of the registration stuff and giving them more information than I felt comfortable with, they said that they couldn’t find my information and that I should call them. Not likely! If this isn’t a rip-off is sure smells like one.
  • Scores
Useless. Do not give up your private information to strangers to get your useless score.
Solution: monitor your credit reports through www.annualcreditreport.com.
  • Free Report
I dont understand some people on here
if you want a free report then of course you will have to gige some personal info(Hellooo) how else can youget one if do not give them any personal info,
Igot mine easy just fine what do you all want for free you give them your info you get your score and report to loot at for free, so quit complaining
  • Free Credit Scores
I started filling out info with Quizzle but read the Terms & Conditions & saw I had to agree to phone calls even though my # is on the Do Not Call list. I stopped at that point and will try to find out my credit score for free somewhere else.
  • FREEZE
THEY WILL NOT GIVE MY SCORE WHEN I HAVE THE FREEZE ON.
  • Credit Scores
I just got my credit score from creditkarma.com . It was quick and easy. Only issue is that it is not even close to being accurate. I am shopping for a refi and the broker pulled my REAL credit scores. All 3 were over 800...CreditKarma score just now was 769...over 30 points off..why even bother....
  • WAMU changing to Chase
As Clark would say, I am not into "giant, monster, megabanks". I am closing my credit card and banking accounts with WAMU and going over full time to Flagstar. I anticipate there will be a ton of changes with Chase that I will not like. Goodbye WAMU, I loved ya while you were here!
  • Credit Scores
I went to Quizzle and CreditKarma and got my scores with no problem. Of course, you have to give them personal information so that they can verify it is you. I chose not to go with Credit.com because they wanted me to sign up for a monthly credit service free trial.
  • credit, Inheritance ?
I inherited a home in Jan of 08 from my cousin. The whole year I have been paying on the morgage. I am almost to the point of forclosure. The moneys are going to fast for my comfort. I just got a home equity line of credit of $100,000.00 because of some other issues with the house.
With the Morgage in my cousin's name and the House in my name, If the house get forclosed on, will that hit my credit report? My score is 805 and I would like to move some time soon, and this frightens me alot. Everyone that I have asked is guessing. Well I don't think so, or, It shouldn't with the morgage in her name. I need a positive answer. Please please help me.
  • Trip to Shanghai
Hi Clark- Thanks for the trip to China . I like to listen to your show when I am not at work. I wish they had repeats of the show on the weekend.
  • credit report
I got the 3 credit reports free with no problem through annualcreditreport.com. I got my credit score for free at creditkarma.com with no problem. Although my credit reports are great so I don't know why my score was in the low 700s.
  • Inconsistent Incomplete
On the radio show today, Clark told a caller that all three of these sites are NOT REAL SCORES! Why bother us? More SPLASH and INCOMPLETE information!
  • Free Scores
The sites listed all give you FREE credit scores. They do not ask for money. I am not sure what site you guys went to.
  • credit score
Used creditkarma.com and it was so easy. Nothing to buy and gave me my score instantly. I have sent the link to all my friends. Highly recommend it.
  • ANNUALCREDITREPORT.COM
for those of you who go to this site. you do not have to pay anything. once you sign up yes it asks you if you want your score you have to pay but if you pay attention to the right side of the screen, it clearly has where you can click on no, get report. then you can view your report or print. i would suggest you get only one at a time, that way you can check each one every 4 months.
  • Free credit repors
You offered 3 website that would furnish free credit reports but those sites solicited money for extra services
  • 'Free' Credit Reports
The 3 sites that you cite for free credit reports charge money for extra services and you have to jump through a bunch of hoops for them.
  • Equifax Credit Report
Using the AnnualCreditReport.com I received my report from Equifax.

I then requested a report on the same site using Equifax with different SS and different Birth Date for my wife.
To my surprise I received a second copy of my original report.

This makes my question the reliability and the security of this site
  • Annual Credit Report
I didn't finish the questionsand quit when they asked me for a credit card number.
  • I used Quizzle...good results
I don't like giving info like income, but it's necessary for some of these sites. I used Quizzle, plugged in my info, and got what I estimate is a correct credit score. They didn't ask for credit card number, and there was no payment needed. It shows the Experian score, my home value, and other helpful information.
  • free credit report
    Experian did not work!!!
  • credit reports
I used AnnualCreditReport.com and very EASILY got my annual credit report from all three: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. I answered questions correctly and they did not ask for any credit card info. Did they try to sell me stuff? Yes, but just answer No Thanks and keep going. Totally free. Very easy.
  • Can the free credit report be trusted?
I am a land lord and I check tenant credit with Residentscreening.net, a paid subscriber service. I checked a potential tenant, found his SS# associated with a name and address other than his own. The tenant then received a free credit report revealing nothing about this situation. Since then the Police and the Social Security Administration are involved in an investigation of identity thieft. As I stated, the free credit report did nothing to reveal this problem. Therefore I am unsure as to the value of the free credit reports.
  • Credit Scores
CreditKarma seems to work well, with no strings attached and no credit card requested. Of course, they do require "personal" information in order to obtain the report. Quizzle and Credit.com are semi-scams, and it's disappointing that CH would list them. My score was 774. I don't understand why it was not higher, since our credit is "perfect." Perhaps it's because we have zero debt? Anybody have an idea about that?
  • Look again, I do not believe any of those are actually free to get just the credit score...I know all about my credit report, just want the number!
  • Annual Credit Report
I went to AnnualCreditReport.com and requested an online report from Experian. They not only said no, mail it in or buy it, but they also returned my full SSN when I had entered only the last 4 digits. This is not a secure site
  • Credit Score
A credit score is a "I LOVE DEBT" score. You have to have a lot of debt and open lines of credit to get a decent score. If you are like me without debt or credit cards and just have a mortgage, you will have a low number.
A credit score is a sorry way to judge someone's financial soundness.
  • Free Credit Score Denied
Your free credit score may also be unavailable if you have an "alert" in place on any of your accounts.
  • 'free' credit report sites
I found the sites useful UNTIL I froze my credit. Now NONE of them will give me a report.
Is that talking out of both sides of your mouth? STRONGLY encouraging people to freeze their credit, while claiming these sites are useful?
  • Credit news
Soon Experian will no longer report to Fair Issac, Read "Experian will no longer offer FICO access for consumers" by Alexis Leondis/Bloomberg News
  • WaMu Visa and My Credit Score
I have also been using the WaMu Visa sight to get my experian credit score updated monthly. Effective 3-09-09 when Chase takes over, that perk is gone. That's too bad. Its been a useful tool.
  • Free Credit Report
Free usually means free, no strings attached. I am disappointed to have been mislead by CH's headlines.
  • Quizzle.com
It was a pain in the butt. I'd put in everything I was supose to and it just didn't work and kept bringing me back to the same page. I was very disappointed in Quizzle. The other's weren't much better.
  • Experian
I went to www.annualcreditreport.com and I chose Experian. I have printed my credit report free.
  • free credit report-not free
the free credit report, was not free! I was still required to enter a credit card info. what's up with that?
  • MyFICO.com
Unfortunately, Experian is yanking its scoring from being provided to Fair Isaac so if you are like me, using MyFico.com for the true FICO score and credit scores -- you will no longer be able to receive the Experian score.
  • Free Credit Scores
    Very good tip, thank you!
  • CW National Retention Program
Hey Fl, they did the same thing to us too! Told me our "modification" was granted in Sept, but I called every 2 weeks for 24 weeks wanting a decision! They kept giving me the run around, telling me not to pay the old mortgage! I was uncomfortable w/that, so I sent in partial payments every 2 wks, they put it in some "hold" account! Now my husbands score is 100pts less! I was told to go to my congressman.CW is so messed up! 1/28/09 they told me I was approved for my modification dated 9/08!
I could have paid that, it was 200 less!

  • Country Wide reporting late mortage payments
I live in Fla and in Oct of 2008 CW regoniated my 2nd mortage rate. I was never late on a payment and they sent someone to my home to sign the new loan. The loan agreemnet said no payment due until Jan 1, 2009. I checked my credit report and CW reported me late for Nov and Dec. I have called and spoke with supervisors and they said the home retention team is responsible. I keep getting the same run a round for the last 2 mo and all they tell me is it takes time for them to fix the problem because they have to wait 90 days until the new loan is in effect and then they will correct the problem. My score hhas dropped more than 90 pts. Can I sue them? And if so any suggestions.
  • Equifax
I went to Equifax today via link from AnnualCreditReport.com, and saw no link to get free report due to denial of credit/CC fraud. Decided to just get my yearly free report. That did not work, as when I clicked link to "View and Print Your Online File", I went to a user/password login screen, and I had no user/password!! Tried this twice, second time found link to apply due to fraud - never got my report. EQUIFAX SITE STINKS.

  • free FICO score from WAMU credit card
Today, Jan 29, you talked about the WAMU credit card which provides the 3digit FICO credit score on the monthly statement. This also is a feature of the on-line access to the WAMU credit card. It was a carryover from the original PAYPAL credit card from Providian, which was acquired from Providian by WAMU. Coincidentally, I received my letter from Chase today, advising that the WAMU on-line site would be closed and the acquisition of WAMU accounts completed on 09MAR09. I called the customer service number for the card and was informed that the new CHASE site will not provide a free FICO score, but that I could purchase a CHASE product of credit scoring which will provide me the ongoing FICO score. Thought you might want to follow up with this info for any WAMU cardholders who have not found this out yet.
Love your show. Thanks for all you do.
