Jan 29, 2009 -- Price projections for natural gas, gasoline looking good

CLARKONOMICS: The cold winter much of the nation is experiencing at the moment would traditionally mean high costs for heating your home. But right now, there is an oversupply of natural gas. In fact, the cost at wholesale is down around a third of what it was in the fall of 2005 leading into 2006. Clark even saw a recent trade at 48 cents per therm!

This means there is tremendous opportunity to save on your home heating costs -- especially if natural gas is a deregulated industry with multiple marketers competing in your state. The smartest move right now is to have a floating rate -- not a fixed rate -- so you can benefit from the current low prices.

On the gasoline front, there's currently a huge disconnect between the extremely low price of a barrel of oil at wholesale ($35) and the price of a gallon of gas at wholesale ($1.06). So there's definitely some wiggle room there for prices at the pump to drop again. In fact, Clark thinks we may routinely see a gallon selling for somewhere in the 90-cent range again.

But he wants to remind people this should not be a reason to get SUV crazy. In fact, OPEC and the Saudis are doing everything they can to reduce the supply coming out of the ground. Don't expect the new lower prices at the pump to stick around forever.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • compair natural gas price
should i lock price in or not
  • need to renew home gas pricing-need advice
I am currently w/GNG and my pricing plan is about to expire. Don't really want to switch to another provider but curious if anyone has any advice as to whether or not to lock into a fixed rate or do a variable one? :)
  • Natural Gas Pricing
I was checking rates with SCANA and was able to get a fixed rate at .779 for 6 monhs with no service charge (5.75). this was less than the senior rate at .789 with the 5.75 svc charge. I will be using less for the summer months and will change in October. Your thoughts
  • Obama just canceled 70 oil leases in Utah. So much for creating jobs and cutting our dependence on foreign oil.
  • natural gas supplier
I want to switch suppliers. Do I switch now or wait until the summer months. Do I go with a fixed or varibale rate?

  • Natural Gas
Any suggestions on how to switch or which "Plan" to go with for the natural gas in Dayton, Ohio area. Vectren is the main supplier.

  • Propane
Clark, why is propane still over $3.00 a gallon when gasoline and the barrel of oil have dropped dramatically? Propane is a petroleum product and it usually follows crude oil prices. I just want t o fill my BBQ!
  • Gas Price Differences
In Dothan, AL prices differ, for reg., from $1.63.9 - $1.83.9. Best price for diesel is $2.08.9. Lowest price we saw was $1.38. It was great for awhile, but the last 2wks it has started to rise again. Hope it does drop under $1.00 per gallon. Clark Howard didn't retire early and rich because he was wrong.
  • Gasoline
The cost of gas has been skyrocketing again in Las Vegas for weeks. It has gone from the 1.50 range to over two dollars and has been going up at a clip of over 10 cents a gallon each week even as the cost of a barrel has gone down over and over again. What new low prices? I see a return to $4 a gallon in the very near future due to price fixing and profit taking.
  • I don't do fixed pricing
And it has saved me a lot money over the past 5 years. I pay more for gas in the winter and less in the summer. And I do use gas for heat, hot water (on demand), my stove, and my gas grill. So although my summer demand drops I am still paying for gas. It has cost me dramatically less this winter. Also, be aware there are additional built in monthly costs to fixed pricing as well and a contract. So, I think saying "don't trust him" is a bit over the top. But, if you can't tolerate any fluctuation of pricing then a "fixed" plan might help you. Otherwise, why lock in unless you have a crystal ball?
  • clark = idiot
Clark is totally wrong about not doing fixed for natural gas. That is terrible advise, so do your own research and don't trust him.
  • 99 cents come on
I want to see 99 cent a gallon gas one more time in my life.
  • Oil down. Gas up. -Again
The average price of regular unleaded in Lawrenceville jumped 12 cents per gallon since yesterday, from $1.67 to $1.79.
