Jan 29, 2009 -- Reward cards dialing back on the perks

Reward cards are beginning to dole out less perks because the giant monster mega banks that issue them are financially ailing.

This trend especially affects the 1 in every 3 of you who pay your balance in full every month. Historically, banks have had a love/hate relationship with what they call "deadbeats" -- those of us who do pay in full each month.

On one hand, they lost money by making an interest-free loan to you each month. But they were making up for it with the merchant fees they charge to the retailers you might patronize.

Be sure to read those mice-type notifications you get in the mail about possible changes to your card's rewards program. You may suddenly need to rack up more points for that free airline mileage, cash-back payment, etc.

Of course, there are several institutions out there not cutting back on the rewards. See Clark's recent discussion of Charles Schwab and Fidelity Investment and their great reward cards offers for details.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Capital One has jumped on the bandwagon of dialing back. My rate went from 8.9% fixed to 16.9% variable according to the notice i got Friday. There have never been late payments and all balances are paid at the end of the month. They say it is an accross the board change.
  • WAMU fico score
Yesterday Clark talked about the WAMU card making my FICO score available free for credit card holders.
That is the reason why I opened an account with them to begin with.

Yesterday I received a form letter from Chase (who now owns WAMU). One of the changes is: NO MORE FREE FICO SCORE!!!
It will still be available if I am willing to PAY for it.
I will no longer be using that credit card, except for a few times a year to keep it active.
    Bad move Chase.
Alert people so they don't open an account thinking they will get a free FICO score.
  • Loan forgiveness
Try googling loan forgiveness, there are many sites that will give you inform. and there are many paths to loan forgiveness.

There are many options, such as monetary, sometimes full payment and others a percentage and loan deferrment.
  • Education loans
My mother-in-law called me concerning what she heard on your show today about student loans. She did not catch the entire topic, but she heard something about students going/gone into teaching could have student loans forgiven. Can you provide information concerning this?
