Jan 27, 2009 -- Aldi poised for growth surge in the United States

Aldi is poised for a growth surge in the United States, according to The Wall Street Journal. There are currently about 1,000 store locations throughout the country.

Clark's beloved hard discounter is so powerful that they were able to send Wal-Mart home with tail between legs when the latter tried to enter Aldi's home market of Germany. The ultra-cheap chain now has estimated annual sales of $7 billion.

Shoppers can save up to 40% off traditional supermarket prices at Aldi. But beware that the shopping experience may not be for everyone. The stores are about the size of a neighborhood chain drugstore; they have limited hours; there are no grocery bags; many only take cash, while other may accept select debit cards -- but no credit cards; and you can usually count on long lines, small aisles and limited selection.

Private labels are king at Aldi. In a Howard family taste test, everyone preferred Aldi's Oreo Double Stuff imitation to the real deal. And the best part of all? It cost one-third less than the Oreo product!

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Seymour
I left an insulated bag in the Aldi Store in Jacksonville, IL. I have been unable to find a phone number to call and see if it was found.
  • Aldi's
We LOVE those same Double Stuff cookies... my husband and kids think they are better than the Oreo brand cookies! The milk prices can't be beat either. We also like many of their cereals.
  • Aldi
It is good for some items, but be careful with others. The produces is not consistent in quality.
  • Aldi's
We shopped at Aldi when we lived in Tulsa, OK and loved it! I know we saved money over even Wal-Mart. We also took advantage of advertised specials, such as trees, Spring bulbs, lawn chairs and children's toys. We regret not having an Aldi's nearby!
  • LOVE Aldi
When I first heard of Aldi, I was hesitant. But when i finally gave them a try, I was so glad I did. I have 3 kids and what I save alone on milk and cereal is amazing, not to mention all of the other great deals. The meat is about the same as other big-chain stores. I recommend a butcher where you can buy in bulk to save money.
  • My experience as a long-time Aldi shopper
Food prices in the US are considerably higher for everyday food items compared to my home country of Germany. One reason is Aldi - the biggest food discounter there. It is a no-frills experience but saves you money w/o the hassle of coupons. The weekly Aldi flyer is a Number 1 read in Germany. Many of Aldi's products are of a generic brand but most of them are actually produced by well-known brands. In Germany, there are little booklets that explain what well-known company makes what product in Aldi's product line. Aldi also branched out into non-food items like dishes, decorations, seasonal items, clothing etc. Their business shirts that they stock about twice a year are my personal favorite for barely $20 a piece.
Can't wait until Aldi finally makes it to California.
Aldi is not just a supermarket - it is also a culture.
  • Great place to shop
I save a lot of money at Aldi's, and they have a double money back guarantee! They offer fresh & frozen meats and their produce, eggs & bread are very inexpensive. Paper bags are only .05 cents each if you forget to bring your own. They also offer great prices on non-food items. I bought a few toys for my kids there around Christmastime. Everyone should shop there at least once before they decide it's not for them.
  • Aldi's is great!
I am a huge couponer. I buy a lot of staple items at Aldi's and then hit our local chain store with my coupons. (Which they double.) There are a lot of things that you cannot even buy anymore with coupons. Groceries have gotten so expensive. I Love the Fit brand yogurt and snacks. My family eats all the canned & frozen veggies from Aldi with no problems. They have wonderful sloppy joe sauce. The cereal is the best. This last year we have been purchasing more & more at Aldi. We have great cashiers at our local Aldi's as well. I look forward to shopping them in the future.
  • Aldi Experience
It takes a little while to learn about shopping at Aldi's. First, take bags or cartons with you or be prepared to pick up an empty carton or two as you shop the aisles, buy a bag at the checkout stand, or go without and empty your purchases into your car, straight from your shopping cart. Also, keep quarters in your car so you always have one to stick into the locking chain that secures each cart to the one in front of it (you'll get the coin back when you return the cart). In the checkout line, you may find that, by the time you are ready to pay, all of your purchases are already in the cart of the person who was in front of you. Your cart will be used by the person behind you (Fear not. Everyone has a cart with a quarter in it). If you don't like the way the checkout person boxed your stuff, you can take it to a counter and rearrange to your heart's content. This is good. It keeps all of the checkout lines moving rapidly. By the way, I find the checkout people at the Aldi's in Lawrenceville, GA to be the sweetest, most pleasant ladies behind any register in the world. And be sure to pick up a flyer on your way out because, even at Aldi's great everyday prices, they have weekly sales and you'll want to plan ahead for your next trip. Fill your car trunk and return your cart so you can retrieve your quarter when you click the chain back into place. One final note: We are lucky enough to have 2 Aldi stores in our area and I believe some of their prices vary, depending on the item.
  • I really like Aldi's
I've been shopping at Aldi's for a couple of years now. I always save money each week by shopping there. If I am not able to get to Aldi's for my weekly shopping and have to go to one of the closer stores, I end up spending much more money and am not satisfied with my purchases. Aldi's doesn't have everything I need but I usually plan my weekly menus around what I know I can purchase at Aldi's. It's great for me and my family!
  • multiple bar codes on products scan quicker
I like how small the Aldi's store is! I can find everything in a shorter period of time and if I have to doubleback, it's not a hike. If there is a line, you won't wait long. Aldi's has ingeniously placed lots of barcodes on each product so the check out clerks are more effective with less handling.
    I'm a big fan of Aldi's system.
  • Why Aldi?
I also have been to Aldi and seen rotten produce and asked an asst. manager if they had non-rotten in the back and was told that's all they had (I would be ashamed to sell it if I were him) I much rather shop at Save-A-Lot It's an independent chain, but the 2 that are nearest to me sell FRESH meat (and frozen for those who want it) the produce is rarely over ripe at full price (only one location the other never-diff. owners) sometimes both have a few "mark down" bannas and other fruit (but it's ok for if you went in to buy it for today's lunch if you left yours on the kitchen table this morning) but otherwise they are clean and fast checkout you pay for bags like Aldi's but if you hit the stores at "rush hour" or near the holidays expect some lines, but you expect that no matter what store you go to on certian times/days (like wed. eve. before thanksgiving). The one the town north of me is cleaner and larger but both are in small converted former grocery store locations, and it's my understanding tha is where most of Save-A-Lots are located where there is underserved comunities or were the "big chains" own a monopoly on the grocery gig. Southern Indiana is blessed we have a choice for cut-rate prices for our groceries we have 3 choices, I guess you all know my preference. By the way, I work for one of the supermarkets who can't stand them.
  • Aldi's
I failed to mention in a previous comment that Aldi's is owned by the same corporation as Trader Joe's. We don't have a Trader Joe's in my city, but I sent my son by the one in Atlanta to pick up some Two Buck Chuck wine, and he reported that Trader Joe's looked like a yuppie Aldi's not knowing that there was a relationship.
  • Aldi
I can certainly agree with those who appreciate shopping at Aldi's as I do. On the other hand, I can't believe all of the "grocery snobs." Aldi's is not a place where I can purchase all of my groceries, but it is certainly a place that I frequent when it is on my "beat and path." It is not the most conveniently located store to me, so I only make a habit of stopping in when in the neighborhood. I, too, take advantage of specials at other stores such as the buy one, get one free. I know my grocery prices, and not everything at Aldi's is the best buy. I do buy a good many produce items, but if they do not look up to par, I pass them by. Milk and eggs are a good buy as well as some of the frozen products. I like the flash frozen pencil thin asparagus and green beans. The bacon-wrapped filets are good and significantly better priced than at other stores. Canned baked beans, mushrooms, diced tomatoes, and low sodium chicken broth are good buys. I choose not to afford organic foods. I am somewhat of a snob when it comes to certain things like good restaurants and good travel. I figure that I can save some $ on some grocery items and not sacrifice quality and have more to spend on those things that rank higher in importance.
  • Aldi
The quality of the meat was not as good.
What we purchased was freezer burned.
  • Aldi's is the Absolute Best
Fantastic shopping! Super products, higher in quality than many so called name brands. Great produce, even meat now. European in design (use your bags or buy inexpensively, etc.) Aldi snobs just don't get it! Almost all products are far less than anywhere else, and much better quality than other store brands. Aldi NC stores are tops, as are the Aldi's in Europe. Learn to be an Aldi's shopper and you will be pleasantly surprised.
  • We Love Aldi's
Although we now live in GA, back home in Ill., Aldi's was one of the main stores we shopped for food value. Was very surprised to see it took so long for Aldi's to make it to GA. and even yet take off! It's amazing to me to see that so many people who are struggling in this messed up economy are still choosing to shop at expensive stores like Publix's, WalMart, and even Kroger with very high prices on almost everything especially meats and fruits and vegetables and that's with a coupon. Even though we are still selecting to buy some meats and maybe some different types of fruits elsewhere, you can't beat the prices at Aldi's. We shop there at least 2x's a week. Never had a problem with parking, shopping carts leaning against our car, or using debit cards if we so choose. Never do we stand in line longer than 10mins (you can best believe, I've stood in line at Walmart and others for over 15-20mins or longer, quite frequently!) I want in and out all the time and I get it at Aldi's. The cashiers are always friendly and they always know their products, unlike Walmart where all the young people they hire could care less! Do your research and read lables and shop at Aldi's! for your moneys worth.
  • Aldi
I came from a town in MO that had an Aldi store. I now live in Tulare,CA and I sure miss the store. Is thier any way I can let them know we can sure use one here in Tulare, CA????
  • Aldi is CHEAP
The reason Aldi is less expensive is because they are cheap. Their products taste perculiar, most of them anyway. The produce is awful. Most of which is past the ripe stage. And then there is the line at the one cashier at work. You can have it if you are so cheap yourself.
  • Aldi's
Here in PA we are blessed with several Aldi's nearby. We've been shopping there for years and couldn't be happier. Over the years we've tried most everything they offer, and go back again and again! Aldi's is the best thing that's happened to this area! Huge savings and high quality! We love Aldi's!!
  • Eggs
Aldi's eggs are larger than supermarket eggs and I like the comfort of knowing things can be returned if deficient in any way.
  • Aldi Food Store
I shop Aldi's in Illinois. Their milk, eggs, etc. are the freshest and last longer than any I have ever purchased. Most of their products are outstanding. I even bought a wonderful Medion (German made) computer about 3 years ago and couldn't be happier. It was loaded and is still ahead of most computers that people are purchasing today. I hope Aldi's comes to AZ; I miss them when I am here for the winter.
  • Aldi Food store
I shop Aldi's alot and would shop it more if it were closer. I'm hoping they build one near us soon. I LOVE THE PLACE!!!!!
  • Aldi
I shop at Aldi all the time. This is a GREAT shopping experience. Who can argue with getting the highest quality groceries at prices so low you'll wonder why you ever shopped anywhere else?????
  • Great
I love Aldi's its true some products are mediocre but you find that in your normal grocery store brands too. Were you aware that the Millville cereals are mad by Kelloggs? You must try the Buehlers' Oatmeal Cranberry walnut cookie dough can you say gourmet taste. I was skeptical until I tried Aldis' now I am a regular but yes I do read lables to see where the Country of Origin is
  • Can't eat only shopping at Aldi
While some prices at Aldi are very good, a significant part of what they sell is substandard compared to other grocers. If you pick and choose what you buy there it is good, but then you have to shop somewhere else too.
  • Aldi
My first experience with the Aldi grocery store was in Germany. What an awesome store. Yes the ones in the states are smaller. But the prices and products are well worth the wait and small aisles. Everything I have ever purchased has been as good if not better than brand names. If you like white wine, may I suggest you try the Landshut Riesling - in a blue bottle - don't think you will be unhappy, plus it is less than $6.00. I've actually been to the winery and was so happy to find the product stateside.
  • Aldi's
We love shopping at Aldi's. We did a price comparison and we save over $200 a month by shopping at Aldis. Don't be put off by "non-brand" items as we have found some of their products to be superior to what we bought at the more well-known stores. The Aldis where we shop do offer bags to purchase at a very low cost and they do take debit cards. There are some items you may still have to purchase elsewhere. Produce and meat department is small and some items they don't carry from one week to the next, but all in all it is a terrific savings, nice and clean, no shopping carts to worry about in the parking lot. I think they offer a wonderful service! I recommend them to everyone who is watching their budget.
  • Ali's is great
I like Aldi's for staples, paper goods, fresh veggies. Checkout is super fast no matter how long the line. Their Computers however ARE AWESOME!!! My Medion Desktop blows other systems away with regard to price - speed. Tech Support calls are answered fast and are based in London England. Other tech items are also a very good deal. I just wished I lived in England for the many items they do not offer here... check out their web-site and you get a sense of their way of doing buisiness, fair to customers AND suppliers.
  • Aldi's not so great
Aldi’s doesn’t have major brands. Sure major brands are higher. I use to work at a food packaging plant many years ago that packaged various dried food products. We did some generic (store brand) and some premium brands. There is a difference in the quality. Beware of cheap prices you might just get what you pay for.
  • European brands of foods
On a recent trip to Europe, I took in some of the local grocery stores. When I came home, I found some of the same brands in Aldi and many of the items are not available in other local grocery stores - certainly not at Wal-mart!
  • Aldi
Did you know Aldi has a 200% guarantee? If you get a bad product they will replace it AND refund your money (with a receipt).

Also, our Aldi takes some, but not all, debit cards in addition to cash.

Our local Aldi also offers paper bags for 5 cents, plastic bags for 10 cents, cloth bags for $1.99 and "Cold" bags but I'm not sure of the price.
  • We Love Aldi
When I lived in Germany Aldi was the place to go for good reasonably priced food. They seem to follow the same methodology here as over there. Smaller store located in more out-of-the-way places with mediocre parking. No fancy displays, its just sitting there to buy, no fluff, no flash. Much of the Aldi food here is far more natural being the Europeans won't tolerate the crap and preservatives we will over here. It's a lot closer to "real" food in many cases. While they don't have everything you can save at least a third on whatever they have.
  • Aldi's is good
I've been shopping at Aldi's off and on since 1987. I like most of the stuff they have. I have to drive a little ways so I only go when I'm that way. Would love if my town had one. I used to only shop there when I lived in IL. Publix is over priced on most foods even with coupons. For some reason people in GA have the misconception that Publix is great. NOT!!!! I spend twice as much for the same stuff as I do at Ingles or Kroger. The penny items is usually junk.
  • Aldi's Fan
I am one of those nuts who spends an inordinate amount of time trying to get the best food for the best price. I've been shopping at Aldi's for the past year. This is the best place to stock up on staples. Read the labels. There's actually slightly LESS processed food here than in my local grocery. There are plenty of great, decently healthy deals on staples to be had here at amazing prices. Eggs, milk, bagged spinach, oil, canned beans/veggies/tomatoes, flour, rice, salsa, pasta, & various condiments. It's not large, so you'll have to round out your shopping elsewhere for more exotic, organic items (ie. Trader Joes for more cheap deals).
  • Mistruths in this post about Aldi
I shop at Aldi religiously get double the groceries for the price. I use a debit card, sometimes not often I may be 3 in line but they put groceries in your cart and you bag them yourself so the checkout process is super fast. Also they sell paper, plastic, frozen food bags and reusable tote bags. The paper and plastic are only cents but they encourage you to bring your bags back to save the environment. Most people these days are using the reusable totes these days anyway. I bought them once at 1 buck a piece elsewhere and that was years ago and they are washable. The selection is limited and I go to another store for certain items but they have a lot and a whole line of fit groceries and active for dieters. During the holidays they sell holiday foods and cultural ones and gift baskets and they sell non-food special items to since you save money on food you can get yourself something. They have a different theme every month like exercise and sell allkinds of exercise stuff like videos, dumbells, Bally's stuff, exercise balls, scales, gym clothes, etc. Check out their site. We love this place and save so much even though we go to another store for some meats, extra veggies and a few other things.
  • Aldi's growth in Danville, VA...
Aldi arrived a few years back and for about two years they had only a few customers. Now...you can hardly get a parking spot! To top that off we have a Sam's and WalMart with in a mile of the Aldi store. We do our main shopping there and stop by Foodlion to finish off the list if needed. We save much more money than going to Walmart only.
  • Aldi
The aldi's i've been to, (2 different locations) have the fastest most professional cashiers i've ever seen in my life. I agree they are poised to explode in growth, and its so great to pull into a nice clean parking lot without carts scattered all over because people are too lazy to push them back.
  • Aldi..no healthy snack food choices
I agree that Aldi has great prices for staples, but I have never seen healthy choices for snacks. Also, watching for sales and using coupons at regular retail markets you CAN buy healthy choices.
  • Debit Cards
Aldi accepts bank debits card. I believe they have for several years now. According to their site at http://www.aldifoods.com/us/html/company/shopping_smarter_3184_ENU_HTML.htm
They accept cash, food stamps/EBT cards, and PIN-based debit cards.
  • I love Aldi
Don't forget your Quarter for the cart... Gotta bag fast or they send you to the "penalty table".
  • Aldi and Publix
I buy milk, eggs, baking ingredients like flour and sugar, as well as some canned vegetables at Aldi. However, I love shopping at Publix for BOGO combined with coupons. Often times I pay next to nothing for products using those deals at Publix.
  • Aldi's
My daughter has been shopping @Aldis for 3 years in MI. I also have shopped there and saved a lot. Some brands are not so great, but you have to try and do the "taste test" to find what you like or don't like. They do take debit cards along with cash. I have never encountered any long lines. Once you are accustom to their products and the consumer doing their own packing, it worth the savings! I'm surprised it has not caught on that much in the metro detroit area!
  • Aldi takes Discover
I think Aldi takes the Discover card. I agree its not for everyone but it is really good for staple type items. Its fun to fill up your cart and have the bill be less than $40. The only store brand item my family did not like was the Mac'n Cheese.
  • Aldi Stores
When I lived in the Atlanta area I frequently shopped at Aldi. I now live in a suburb of Jacksonville, FL and regretably the two nearest Aldi stores are 74 and 82 miles away. I will use them again frequently when they open a store nearer to my home.
  • Produce prices can't be beat
Our local Aldi has good produce, with prices sometimes half that or more of Kroger on Cauliflower, oranges, grapefruit, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, onions, etc. You can make the BIG salad a lot cheaper from Aldi. Canned beans and tomatoes are great too.
  • Aldi
I know that it isn't scientific, but I drive by Aldi every weekday on my way to pick up my son from Preschool, and it seems that the parking lot is fuller than last year. Besides the prices, I find if you go at the right time ( right when it opens), you can get in and out in 5 or so minutes. Now you can't do that at a normal grocery store!
  • Healthy Choices
I'd rather pay more for whole grains, organics, and natural foods than the cheap preservative, sugar-laden foods at Aldi's. You really don't want to skimp on your health. In the end it will cost much more than what you save eating fast food & shopping at a deep discounter.
  • New Aldi's is great
We just started supplementing our grocery shopping at a new Aldi's here in NC. Easily save $20-40 per visit and can blow through the place quickly. We have never returned any of their products for the Double Satisfaction Guarantee but it's good to know it is there. Checkout has always been fast and they DO take debit cards.
  • Aldi
When I was living up North I would shop at Aldi all the time when ever is convenient. It really saves me a lot of money. Now that I'm living in Texas I'm really sad to say that I am not able to shop there anymore because there is no aldi around here. I wonder if you would know any store like Aldi here in Houston, TX
  • Aldi
I went to Aldis once because of Clark raving about it. It only took one trip around the store to push my empty cart back to the outside to get my quarter back and head over to the military Commissary. There I can get brand name food (and be able to use coupons) for the same price, be able to speak in English to the cashier, and not have to wait in huge lines!
Even if I was not eligible to use the Commissary, I would rather play the grocery game with coupons and sale items rather than shop at skanky Aldis.
  • Aldi
Love Aldi's. As an example bought canned baked baked beans and canned red chili beans for $0.59. Well over a dollar at most stores. Also good for other staples
  • Aldi
I have been shopping there for about four years average of $40.00 or more depending on what I purchase weekly.
  • Aldi
I shop at Aldi every couple of weeks, just for specific items. I've tried a lot of the different off-brands there; just like all off-brands, some are fine, some are not. I just avoid the bad ones. I don't buy much processed foods, but there are plenty of dairy products (they're the only ones who still sell 8-ounce yogurts, and they're only 43 cents each), their milk prices can't be beat ($2.79/gallon in Orlando, but no 1% milk), and some of the produce is good quality and quite inexpensive. The spiral-sliced ham I bought was not only much cheaper than any other store, but it was really great quality (and I just bought one on clearance for $5 off). I do agree that Publix's buy-one-get-one-free deals are the best. Oh, and our Aldi takes cash and debit cards, no credit cards. Bottom line: I still do most of my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart, but supplement quite a bit with Aldi.
  • Aldi
Publix and WinnDixie by one get one free deals blow away WalMart & Aldi's prices. The lables on non brand stuff just read distributed by the discounters. You cant find out where its made, China??
  • Aldi
I will never go to Aldi again! It was, as they say in Texas "All hat and no cows."
  • Payment
Clark, I am positive they take debit and or credit cards for payment. It says in your article just cash.
  • aldi
i have shop aldi for around 5 years i haver never had a problen with there can veg the double stuff oreos look likes taste better than the real ones the milk has the real milk emblen on the lable not even costco can sell milk as cheap as them we shop aldi over kroger and publix and no one has mention that every thing they sell has a double your money back on the lable also bought a lap top computer state of the art at that time 4 years ago still works fine and they do have a local rep with a phone # and there corp office has a phone # and they do answer your calls all you have to do is look on the internet for the phone numbers.!
  • ALDI is alright
I have shopped at ALDI for about four/five years. I do not mind the limited selection. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with ten thousand different types and brands of items at regular grocery stores. I have learned that the selection, lighting, refrigeration, display, etc. costs me money. I would change a few things about ALDI, but overall it is a good alternative for saving my money. Store brands are usually made/processed in the same factories as name brands. I have had problems with a few items but ALDI always takes care of the problem, but so has Publix, Kroger, Albertson's and Winn Dixie. Save your money so you can escape the financial disaster by shopping at ALDI.
  • Aldis
I went into Aldis today, just to check it out, what I found was cheap food, cheap, nothing that great. I only found a few items I would buy, not worth it to me. Just to compare half gal of orange juice Albertsons brand $1.99 on sale, Aldis $2.34
  • Aldis
Aldis in GA takes debit cards. However, most of the fruit is rotten and there is no where to complain to if you find this out once you get home. Store phone # are unlisted, corp headquarters doesn't have an email or phone # on their website. Only snail mail address. How quaint.
  • Cheap Food
Sure. The food is cheap. Because its cheap food. Read the labels of the products at a typical Aldi. They are loaded with so many artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and chemicals they could keep a high school science class going for years.
  • So
An when do you think ALDI is going to open a store in Peanutpickersville?
  • My local Aldi (central Florida) sells grocery bags, and takes debit cards.
