Several months ago, Clark told you that basic cable customers are
falsely being pushed to switch to new more expensive digital cable service.
The February 2009 digital TV changeover is being cited as the reason why the costly switch is necessary --
but it's not true. The FCC had been all over the cable industry after receiving scores of complaints about this issue. Unfortunately, many of the cable companies are stonewalling and taking advantage of this time of transition in Washington and at the FCC to keep sticking it to customers.
Meanwhile, Comcast specifically is now being investigated for
degrading signals for VoIP service.
The February 2009 issue of
Consumer Reports has more unkind words for the cable companies. If you're looking to bundle (phone, TV and Internet), Comcast and Charter are your
worst choices, according to the publication. The 2 best providers of bundles are Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse -- a couple of large monopoly phone companies.
One last money-saving tip:
The Wall Street Journal reports that you can negotiate what you pay your provider for individual services or bundles if there's competition in the market. People mentioned in the article cut their costs by 50% -- without changing companies.
