Jan 16, 2009 -- Mobile DTV coming to a handheld device near you

Local TV will be coming to a range of handheld portable devices for free in dozens of markets over the next several months, according to The Chicago Tribune.

The advent of what's being called Mobile DTV will begin in about 22 cities across the country. Traditional broadcast channels will be available for transmission on any of a number of devices that are currently selling in Europe and elsewhere for around $100. The picture will be crisp and clear -- even if a passenger is watching a handheld device in a vehicle traveling at highway speeds.

No word yet if the cable channels will piggyback on this technology and begin offering cable packages for a monthly fee.

What others are saying

  • DirecTV unit
DirecTV's unit is approx $1000+ so a bit more expensive. It mirrors whatever you get at your home, so if you get locals at home you get locals on the SAT-Go
  • Mobile Stupid
Great, Just what we need, another idiot running down the interstate or highway doing 70+ watching the boob tube while driving.
  • Mobile TV available now
DirecTV has had a mobile unit available for several years already. Unit is about the same size as a laptop and operates via satelite. Whether or not it will give you local TV as well as the other channels, I do not know.
