Jan 14, 2009 -- Clark details his bidding secrets for upcoming Las Vegas trip

Clark and his wife are about to embark on a trip to Las Vegas thanks to some cheap airfare they managed to land. Though they'll be going on a holiday weekend, they had no trouble finding bookings at hotels.

The penny-pincher tried bid after bid, day after day on Priceline to get a deal that was suitable. But before he entered his first bid, his first stop was BiddingForTravel.com to get a feel for what other successful bids looked like. He noticed the general trend was around $110 for a night at a 5-star hotel and started his first bid at the ridiculously low $59 before going up incrementally.

He made 24 bids over 3 days in total. How is that possible? In general, Priceline only lets you bid once a day. But in Las Vegas, there are multiple neighborhoods you can bid in -- and only 2 had 5-star hotels. He simply added a new neighborhood and rebid each time as he got turned down.

Clark ended up paying $105/night, which is way more than he expected. He thought he would be at a Wynn property, but he actually got the new Trump property. The reviews on TripAdvisor.com suggest the staff has a real attitude toward customers, so we'll see what happens…

The bright spot of the trip is that his rental car is only $8 before junk fees. That's cheap, thanks to a new no-frills, automated Hertz discount subsidiary called Simply Wheelz by Hertz.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • resort fees and bidding
One advantage to Hotwire over Priceline in Vegas is that Hotwire will clue you in to the resort fees in advance. Between the ammenties and the resort fees, you can figure out the hotel before you agree to buy.

I don't know why the hotels are resorting to the fees. There are still a few resisting them. I just hope this doesn't become a national trend. The fees are generally for items a Vegas tourist doesn't want and border on the ridiculous ie. notary service!
  • Undisclosed "resort fees"
We recently got a room through Priceline for $50 per night only to discover at check-in a $15/ day "resort fee" and a $20/day parking fee that PriceLine did not disclose at bid time. We ended up paying 70% more for the room than our PriceLine name your own price. A cynical person would say that PriceLine and the hotels are in bed together to mislead and ripoff the consumer.
  • Trump
We, too, scored the Trump 5* in Vegas for $70 after seeing the lowest accepted bid was $75 on Bidlesstravel (http://www.bidlesstravel.com) and lowering the bid $5...deal!
  • Trump resort fee
I also booked the Trump through Priceline for $67/night. Sounded like a great deal until I arrived and was hit up with a mandatory $15/night "resort fee"!! False advertising from Priceline! This was more like name your own price plus whatever the hotel feels like charging you!
  • Whee
Can't find a $8 rental car on the Wheelz website for a trip to Vegas tomorrow. Are there any other car rental bargains?
  • A Better Bidding Web Site
A much better web site for assistance with Priceline and Hotwire bids is Betterbidding.com. You will get alot more assistance with your bids from this friendly bunch. Check it out !!
  • What does a penny pincher do in Vegas?
I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what Clark plans to do in Vegas. If he's a gambler, I'd love to learn some tricks for spending less while at the tables!
  • Clark is wasting his money!
The average person doesn't need to rent a car in Vegas. There are free (or $1 per ride) shuttles that go up and down the Strip, and walking in Vegas is great exercise.
  • Priceline bid on Las Vegas Hotel
I put in a Priceline bid yesterday for a 4 star in the North and South strip and got the Westin on Flamingo a block off the strip for $80 per night for a 3 night stay Sunday - Tuesday the third week of March. I'm happy.
  • Up to 128+ bids per day possible in this case
If all of the instructions on BiddingForTravel.com are followed, it is possible in the Las Vegas area when bidding for a 5 start hotel to place 128+ bids per day because there are 7 areas with no 5 star hotels resulting in 2 to the 7th power (128) free rebids. If you don't care which of the other 2 areas you end up in then you can bid over 256 times per day.
Vegas is unique, but using these instructions can let you bid 8 or 16 times per day in other markets too.
  • Update on Wheelz
Sorry for double post but... Checked at Hertz directly and the same car was $33.49/day or a "Pay Now" price of $22.79. Cheaper than Wheelz, I guess friendly manpower at the desk is cheaper than a computer Kiosk??
  • Wheelz
I too planning trip to Vegas in Feb. Cheapest rate I could get for a car was $24.99++ for Economy car. Tried weekday only as well as weekend. Clark must have got the last cheap car!
  • My rate was cheaper than yours
My bid was $75 a night and I have 3 nights at the Trump also...and to add to the good luck round trip from Jacksonville for $175 a person
  • Bidding on Priceline
I also like to bid on priceline, and I went to Vegas for $99 a night and stayed at Trumps property also.
However, the staff was very nice all three days of my stay. I hope you and your wife will enjoy!
