Jan 14, 2009 -- Be careful when posting on online review sites

Just days ago, Clark told you about a chiropractor who filed a libel suit against someone who posted a negative review on Yelp.com. Now The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the case was quietly settled out of court.

Hot on the heels of that news, a dentist has now filed suit against 2 people who posted negative reviews about her practice.

Does anyone see a trend emerging here??

Online review sites can really shape the way we conduct business with vendors, hotels, etc. But here's the bottom-line for you: Be smart about what you post.

It's like Clark often tells people who want to protest outside of a business they say treated them unfairly: Stick to the facts in your speech and actions. It's one thing to assert your rights, but it's another to open yourself to litigation with overheated rhetoric.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • easy way to sift through negativity
Check out www.ecompliments.com. Its a great way to follow the old adage " if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything". If you are genuinely thrilled with a product or service you can leave a compliment. If you are looking for a great restaurant to check out - go on and search the ones in your town - if you see compliments you know that place is probably a good one to try. Or if you are looking for a dentist that is great with kids, look for compliments from other Mom's. If you want to leave a compliment go right ahead - if you have nothing good to say then lack of compliments speaks for itself as well. No worries.
  • WE ARE VICTIMS OF LIBELOUS POSTINGS FROM BAD LANDLORD AND HER STAFF
We are victims of a brief (8 weeks) and former landlord (Tressa Rossi “owner” of Fox Property Management Inc, Portland Oregon) who has been posting in the internet/web slanderous, libelous and defaming lies about us.

The census is that since she opened her business in 2004, she frantically surfs the internet every weekend and on Wednesdays for any negative postings on reviews sites that are about her, her husband or their businesses practices.(Robert Rossi "owns" Fire & Ice Cleaning Portland Oregon) She also posts her own “positive reviews”

She has enlisted staff/employees to assist her, one Peter Eberle who owns “computer software” Amazexon Software and she refers to herself as the “Webmaster”.

We highly recommend anyone who is a tenant, past tenant or declined tenant/landlord to “Google” their names and she what she has posted about you.
  • Review Sites
I have noticed that some reviews are verbatim with brochures. It usually came just after a bad review.
  • Reveiws Posted
Excellent advice. I check out reviews all of the time before buying. When someone rants and raves I don't find it as credible as when someone who better defines their particular experience.
