Jan 13, 2009 -- Mystery 25-cent charges on credit cards around the nation

RIP-OFF ALERT: Have you seen a suspicious charge for 25 cents on your credit card recently? If so, you're not alone.

In previous years, Clark told you about a criminal ring based in suburban Los Angeles that went to a bank and bought the credit card numbers of 2 million customers. The crooks put small charges of less than $10 on all the cards month after month. Eventually, they stole hundred of millions of dollars.

Only 7% of people ever noticed the bogus charges. We talk about balancing our checkbooks and carefully vetting our credit card statements, but apparently it's just lip service.

In a similar scenario, credit card customers around the country now are reporting a mystery charge for a quarter from an entity called Adele Services in Melville, N.Y. A Boston Globe reporter has determined there is no such business registered in the state.

No one quite knows what is behind these 25-cent charges. The most-likely theory is that these nominal amounts are being run to see if a credit card is active. If the charge goes through, the criminals know they can later hit those cards for larger charges.

Years ago this happened to Clark with his Diner's Club card, which he used in Budapest during a staff dinner. Some crooks obviously got the card number at the restaurant because within hours a duplicate card was made and being used in Italy! The fraud division at Diner's Club noticed Clark couldn't possibly have been in Budapest and then Rome just a few hours later and they promptly shut the card number down.

The takeaway for you is that you've got to go through your credit card statement line item by line item. You must dispute any unrecognized charges -- even if it is for 25 cents! The issue is not the 25 cents; it's that a criminal may have your credit card number.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Pro Flowers and Encore Marketing
I had the same experience with Pro Flowers and Encore Marketing Easy Saver. Same amounts. I called Encore Marketing and demanded that I receive a refund.

Issue is that they have my card number now.
  • Easy Saver
Update to my earlier comment. I did get the refunded charges to my credit card within the 48 business hours. I still think it's a sham but I wanted to post that they did refund like they said they would.
  • Easy Saver ripoff
I ordered from ProFlowers. I thought I was signing up for free shipping on the next order. Not! It was from something called Easy Saver. It started with $1.95 then the $14.95. ProFlowers said they would help get my money back (we'll see). Supposedly I will have all of my refund in 48 business working hours from Easy Saver. In the meantime, I am disputing the charges.
  • Small Charges
In Feb of 2009 I had a charge appear on my statement for $1.95 from a company called easy saver then the next month it was a $14.95 charge. I never autorized the charge and was told by the card company it was a reacurring internet transaction watch your statements especially if you dao any shopping on line
  • Small Charges on Credit Cards
This happened to my husband and they charged $1.00 at Circuit City and then within an hour they charged $25?.??. I guess since the $1. went thru they figured they could charge more. Then another $350.00 at another store.
  • Mystery charges
I had the same problem with BofA this year. Someone charged $7.25 on my Visa debit card. I balance my account if not daily at least every other day. I noticed the charge and called the phone number listed, and guess what! The number was not in service. Then I immediately transferred a majority of my money to other account. The next day there was a charge for .15 cents with another number that was not in service. Clark is right about the criminals charging small amounts just to see if the account is still active. Even though it was a small amount BofA reimbursed me so please check & balance your accounts because times are hard now and people are getting desperate.
  • mystery charges
Last year, my BOA card was hit with a small charge of less than a dollar. About a month later I had 2 charges of a little less than $200 each at 2 seperate CVS stores in Las Vegas. I don't live near Vegas nor have I visited there in many years. I disputed and got the money back and a new card number. Be observant.
  • how can you spend only .25 cents on gas
that sounds like bunk.. its hard enough to stop a gas pump at 1.00 much less .25.
it cost more to process the charge that that.. at least put 10.00 buck on it and then pay it off.. guys like you make the good deals go away from abuse.
  • Speaking of .25 cents
I have a Discover card that I have a balance on and get 0% for the life of the balance as long as I make two charges a month. The funny thing is I charge .25 cents of gas twice a month. I plan to do this until the balance is paid off. It's not a scam for me....LOL.
