Jan 05, 2009 -- iPods now can be equipped with breathalyzer

This past New Year's Eve was like any other, according to Clark -- too many drinkers partying it up and then getting behind the wheel. Call him an old fogey, but Clark's rule is to be home by a decent hour on Dec. 31 to avoid running into drunk drivers.

Enter the iBreath, a breathalyzer attachment for your iPod designed to measure your blood-alcohol content. The Los Angeles Times reports the device sells for $79. That's very cheap insurance vs. the price of hiring an attorney to handle your DWI or DUI case.

Clark has been on a freeway in Norway when authorities detoured every single motorist to the nearest exit to perform a breathalyzer test. As a near teetotaler, he had nothing to worry about. In fact, the penny-pincher always limits himself to one beer whenever he's out and about.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Are you kidding?
Most X'ers will use this gee-whiz gizmo to prove what a BIG MAN they are by blowing a 4.2 to show off to their buddies before jumping into their bitchin' Honda and buzzing down the road like a big-dog. Anyone with a brain knows that if you've had a snort, you're a passenger, period. If you have to check the tox level, you're not driving anyway, right? Just another expensive gee-gaw for kids to play with, IMO. Spend the bucks on some great suds, and leave the driving to someone else, folks.
  • D.U.I
First of all the police would need probable cause to pull you over in the first place, thats some sort of infraction, reason to stop you. Anyone of those devices would be helpful to use, just to let you if you might be over the limit. It seems that the hard core drunks are still out there. They would just measure amount of alcohol consumed not tolerance.
  • Driving Drunk?
Just FYI for folks, it's possible to blow a .05 but still be arrested for impaired driving. You don't have to be drunk to be a reckless driver due to impairment. Save yourself $79 and go out to party with a plan to get home safely.
  • Intoxilizers vs. "Breathalizers"
Breathalizers or "dial-a-drunk" are illegal in California. Intoxilizers are calibrated every 10th use and are legal in California.
