Jan 05, 2009 -- Sprint on the vanguard of 4G technology

4G technology -- that's "fourth generation" in industry lingo -- is almost upon us. Sprint is among the leaders in this arena, with their 3G/4G USB Modem U300.

Sprint's 3G/4G modem is essentially an aircard that allows laptop users to wirelessly connect to the Internet. You're able to surf at the faster 4G speeds when you're in a city that has been built out to support the new technology. When you're not, you surf at 3G speeds.

There's no switching necessary on your part; the modem automatically senses 4G where it's available and picks it up.

So far Baltimore is one of the few 4G-equipped cities, but expect to see more cities added throughout 2009. Clark believes this could be great for business travelers during the coming year.

  • Sprint 4G
I am using Sprint's new 4G all over Atlanta for work and what a difference! Great service and experience!
  • I'll believe it when I see it
This 4G hype from Sprint sounds suspiciously like the 3G hype from Sprint 6 years ago...

I'm a software developer. I used to work for Sprint back in 2002 when 3G was getting off the ground.

Two things stand out from my time with Sprint:
    1) the entire company is largely driven by the marketing department which has a questionable basis in reality, and
    2) as a consequence of #1, I had (and still have) no idea how they're still in business.

My software team was building a bunch of new stuff for 3G. We were told "3G is almost here", "everyone will be using it", etc. In reality, we were building software for phones you couldn't buy for a network that didn't exist. And it remained like that for a very, very long time. Eventually, after 1 or 2 YEARS, reality caught up to Sprint's marketing fantasies and today people think 3G is old hat. And now, here we are, on the verge of 4G.

    2009? I don't buy it.
