Jan 02, 2009 -- Bally Total Fitness goes bust again

Bally Total Fitness is going bankrupt for the second time in little more than a year.

Clark has long trashed the health club over their suspect business practices. Bally's is known to use high-pressure sales to get you to buy a membership. Once they have a contract, they do what's called "moving paper."

The club sells off the contract to a finance company that will take the paper on and pay them pennies on the dollar. That creates additional incentive for the club to sign up more members -- and hope none of them ever show up and all try to exercise at once!

In a recent SEC filing, Bally's disclosed that the average member visits the club one-half of one time per week. You'd be hard-pressed to find any fitness expert who recommends a workout once every 2 weeks!

There is, however, a better way for health clubs to do business. It's where you pay month-to-month or quarterly with no real contract. That creates incentive for the club to help keep you on a healthy regimen so you'll keep coming back. They win and you win!

One final thought: We as consumers fool ourselves into thinking that by signing a contract we'll be more apt to work out at a health club. But it doesn't work that way; usually within 6 weeks, the average person stops exercising altogether after joining a gym.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • BALLY GYN IS FILTHY AND INSTRUCTORS ARE QUITTING
Bally's gyms are filthy as part of their restructuring plan included firing all but one janitor per gym.

The one I go to in Chatsworth has not fixed a broken air conditioner this summer. I have formally complained to them.
They have also fired some of the class instructors and more are quitting. They were paying the $10/hour class plus $1 per student out of the $3 per student fee. They have now cut the pay to $10 plus $0.60 per student.

Contrary to Michael Sheehan's rhetoric, Bally's is working hard at failing again by giving customers a poor experience.
  • toilet deat covers
The Ballys in North Hollywood, Studio City & Encino, CA all stopped providing toilet seat covers as part of their "cut backs"!!! In a Health club no less!!!
  • Steam Room always out of order, no lifeguards
Saddle Brook, NJ facility- Steam Room closed for the past one month due to maintence Part on "Back Order"
Solution: order an extra Part for the next breakdown. This has been a consistent problem for past 5 years

Also lifeguards don't show hence the whirlpool area is closed
  • Ballys is not a good place to workout
I was assaulted in the locker room by a criminal that was allowed in by the staff. Over a $100K in medical bills and bankruptcy allows them to postpone the lawsuit. How is that justice ?
  • Huh? Bally has been great!
I have been a "member" for 7 yrs. and appreciate having a club nearby. Yes, I can walk / run, do squats in my living room, all on my own, but I get tired of the same 4 walls. I tried the home gym setup, and miss the "people" and the opportunity to meet others in my community. Bally is no different than any other subscription gym.
  • Burned by Bally
I was con-ed into one of those contracts by a Bally employee a few years back so I am very happy to find out that Bally is going under. I have never gone to a publig gym after that. I bought a good pair of walking shoes and waled every day for 20-30 mins. I lost 40 lbs in 2008 and now weigh 160 lbs which is not bad for good for 5'8". I also own an elliptical, a bench press, a curl bar, and dumbell set which are installed in my garage. No more filthy, sweaty gym machines!
  • Bill Scales, read Debbie's comment, and look in the box where you see that ad. The ad is by Google and is based on keywords in the article - so if the article is on Bally, Google's logarithms think that it would be a good idea to display an ad for Bally. The website has no control over it.
  • Bally's
My membership with Bally's only costs me $5 per year but I won't use their clubs because they are always dirty and the wet facilities usually don't work. I joined Lifetime for $60 per month and love it. I go three or four times a week. It is like a resort!
  • Bally's
It is kind of funny that the Bally's free membership is right next to this story..such credibility.
  • Fitness Savings
I pay $60 a year to use our county recreation center. It has the same machines found in those fancy fitness clubs. It doesn't have the over-priced witch's brews or the spa rats. Bring your own towel and music and water bottle.
  • Bally ads
Those ads are by Google and, if it works here like at other sites I am familiar with, this site has no control over what appears in them. Google scans the page for keywords and chooses ads based on them. I assume "Bally" is a "hot" keyword, so that's how it ended up here.
  • Bally Total Fitness
I have a difficult time with your comment about Bally Total Fitness, when in the next column there is an ad for free membership to Bally...on your website!!!
