Dec 12, 2008 -- Schwab, Fidelity roll out great credit card offers

In the midst of all the credit card companies reducing people's limits, Charles Schwab and Fidelity Investments -- the Hatfields and McCoys of the investment world -- have 2 of the best credit card offers available.

Schwab got the ball rolling with a new Visa card that offers 2% cash back for every charge you make. There are no limits or caps; this is the real deal. The money gets deposited into your Schwab One investment account, but you can choose to just spend the cash instead of investing it if you wish.

The offering from Fidelity is slightly different. Their Fidelity Retirement Rewards American Express Card takes your 2% cash back and deposits it directly to your IRA or 529 plan.

What others are saying

  • fidelity card site
    not there
  • Schwab Invest 1st VISA
please disclose that this is technically a FIA Services card.
  • To Robert
The Schwab does appear to have the normal 25 day grace period according to the application so you might not want to cancel that card just yet. People on the Money board on this site seems happy with it.

  • This Card is no good
I applied for this card to get the 2% back. But they charge a periodic rate. So even though you pay off your balance, you still pay interest from the moment you purchase something. So I will be cancelling it soon. Not a good deal.
  • Schwab card & security thaw
We're in the middle of applying for the Charles Schwab 2% cash back Visa card to supplement our AmEx True Earnings card (which gives 3% back for gas and restaurants). We had a Schwab brokerage account many years ago, but closed it and transferred the funds out, because it used to have a high annual fee. The new Schwab brokerage account has very favorable terms, and as others have mentioned, no minimum deposit if you link it to the Visa card. I wanted to add that we had frozen our security / credit accounts. Schwab allows you to select one credit bureau that they will access. I selected Transunion because they currently are providing a security (credit) thaw for free! I initially tried a selective security lift, but Schwab has no idea how to enter the access code, so I've now requested a global security lift.
  • Schwab
Steve, I had the same experience. Schwab must have decided that only the big accounts were profitable, but I really think they learned their lesson after they lost so many accounts. My (minor) son opened an account with them last year and I discovered that they have become even better (and lower-cost) than they were back in the 80's.

I sympathize with the once burned twice shy sentiment, but for me I'll give them another chance.
  • best available?
2% seems like the best offer yet for cash back, as most others require you to charge at certain retailers or categories. I have a Shell gas card thru Citi that rebates 5% Shell gas purchase for credit, but only 1% on everything else.
  • Schwab
I had a Schwab account years ago that was great, then as the market crashed their fees went way up.
    Would never use them again.
  • Waive Deposit
Just confirming what Kim said, the $1000 deposit is waived if you first apply for the visa card and are approved. http://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/banking_lending/credit_card/credit_card_faq.html?cmsid=P-2874625&lvl1=banking_lending&lvl2=credit_card&
  • Schwab visa
I just called Schwab and if you link the brokerage account with the visa they wave the $1000 deposit.
  • Schwab Visa card offing 2% cash back
Sounds great but I do not have the $1000.00 to open the required account to apply for the card. Thanks anyway.
  • cc cash back
I have the chase card that gives 3% on your top 3 categories and 1% on everything else. Works great. plus the give you $250 back when you qualify for the $200 back point. So an extra $50
  • US Bank credit card
My US Bank visa offers money back similar to the above mentioned Pentagon Credit Union Card. The only glitch now is you have to request your money back. Formerly, the money would be automatically sent to you when it reached $25.00. We use our cards to pay for everything, and we pay them off every month, so it's a great way to take advantage of the cc companies- they certainly take advantage of plenty of folks.
  • money back card
My favorite is the American Express Costco card. You pay the Costco membership fee and the card is free if you qualify for it. We get back about $400.00 every year.
  • Pentagon Federal credit union
The Pen fed card works really well - it's a VISA card with 5% back on gas, 2% on supermarkets and 1.5% on everything else. www.penfed.org
  • Subaru Mastercard
I have a Subaru Mastercard that offers 3% back on ALL my purchases (not just at Subaru). The money can be used only for services and purchases at Subaru, but it sure saves a lot of money on oil changes, maintenance services, tires, etc.
  • fidelity
I have been using the fidelity visa card for over two years

    nothing NEW at all Dopey
  • good story about this

  • cash back cards
one of the best deals out there now is the Discover more card offer. until the end of the year when you sign up it offers $100 cash back when you spend $500 in the first 3 months...you would have to spend $5000 to get that much from a 2% card...also they have a tease about 5% back, but it's only on 3 catagories which change every 3 months, and they cap it where it only allows you $20-$40 back at 5% ...but you can use it to get the $100 and then put it up or only use it for the current 5% catagories....I also got a chase freedom card that offers 3% on the 3 catagories you spend the most in every month (from a list of 15 catagories) it offered $50 back after first purchase....there are plenty of these cards out there and if you got good credit you can get any of them, use them to get cash back, cancel them , and get another card with sign up bonuses...a regular savings account would have to have 10k+ to earn the kind of interest you can get from these offers, and other than paying for what you buy , you don't have to use your money to earn the cash.
