Dec 12, 2008 -- Avoid getting your credit cards reduced or shut down

Clark's been getting a ton of calls from people complaining that their credit card limits have been greatly reduced or cut off altogether. In fact, the consumer champion recently read a new report that suggests up to $2 trillion in credit lines will be cut off by the end of 2009. The cuts are expected to intensify in the next 2 months.

So what's going on here? JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and American Express -- the 3 bigs of the credit card business -- account for more than half of all the credit cards out there. Right now, the 3 bigs are getting pinched on their ability to go out and borrow money to lend to you, plus they're terrified about the rising number of defaults.

Basically, that has them looking for any excuse to cut off your line of credit. This can be particularly bad if you're a traveling businessman or woman who needs a credit card to rent hotels or vehicles.

Know this: If you miss a single payment or are late on any card, you may have one or all of your cards shut off or greatly reduced.

So you've got to make a note of the payment due date on every card, and make sure you pay at least the minimum payment. Also, be sure to use your "back of the wallets" at least twice a year to keep them active and avoid having them shut down.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • lowered credit limits
if credit card companys lower your line of credit does that affect your credit score thanks rick

  • HSBC.... SHAME ON YOU!!!
I rec'd a letter from HSBC stating that my interest rate would rise from 2.9% to 18.99%. I could accept this or opt out and cancel the card. I called HSBC (and actually got help). I was told due to a business decision by HSBC my rate would change. I Then started checking into my account and noticed that my credit limit was now $300.00. I called back and found out that last year December 2008 my limit was dropped due to inactivity.
I sent a letter back and as Clark would say... "YOUR FIRED" Boy, did that feel good!
Hang in there everyone, we can get through this!.

  • AMEX sucks
I've been with AMEX for 13 years. Last month I paid my bill through their online site. At the same time, I discovered fraud on my checking account and had to close it. I called AMEX immediately and rectified everything. Now I get a letter telling me I must close the account or accept a 27% interest rate on the daily balance, no grace period because of the returned payment. I have great credit, fairly conservative and have only one other crdit card. This should be illegal! What a bunch of crooks!
  • Chase should be investigate or outlawed
Chase is really abusive and taking advanage of good customers. I called to reduce my interest rates. They jacked up the rates on a $4000 pervious balance and now when I pay $124 payment, $91 goes to interest and and $33 goes towards the balance. This is out rageous and now I have 3 cards in this situation because Chase bought the others I had under different names. I am at the breaking point right now with them. On 1 card they have made $546 interest and $186 towards the card. They need to be outlawed and I think they even got bailout money!!!
  • Erroneous Credit Limit in Credit Report
I just received a copy of my credit report from Equifax and noted that they underreported my credit limit by over $30,000. This resulted in my appearing to be using much more of my available credit than is the case. I called CitiBank to ask why my credit limit was showing as zero and was told that, although the card agreement says the limit is $10,000, since I can actually exceed that amount, they report it as zero. Thus my three cards, with $30,000 in total credit available, show as zero available. Please check your reports if you have CitiBank AAdvantage cards.
  • Chase / WaMu accounts closed
I had the same thing to happen. Received new Chase Visa to replace my old WaMu cards. Hadn't activated, but when I tried account was closed, as was my other WaMu MC. $4k in credit gone--not late on any payments to anyone. I only started using Chase because they hold my mortgage. I emailed to them that I will be working actively to remove all of my banking business from their bank--checking, savings, mortgage--I encourage others to do the same
  • chase shut me down
Just received a letter in the mail from Chase informing me they're closing my account basically because I don't use the credit card. What can I do to avoid this? I did use it a few months ago and paid off the balance. I owe '0' on both cards. HELP
  • Credit Card
I have had a Chase Credit card and have in the past 4 months paid off all of my credit card debt leaving me with no credit card debt, no car payment, only my mortgage which is less than most people pay for rent. I bought a new t.v. and used my Chase credit card knowing I could pay it off in full in less than a month. Yesterday I go to use my credit card for an online purchase only to find out it has been denied. Called the credit card company and they informed me it has been canceled. Of course, they can't tell my why only that I would be receiving a letter in the mail. Of course, me being very upset said well, does this mean I can cancel what I owe you? I know this is normal these days, but it is very frustrating.
  • Credit Card Account Closed
We have done the same thing - never activated card. I'd send a letter to the 3 credit bureaus stating just what you said - backed up w/statements showing $0.00 balance (be sure to black out acct #.
Unfortunately, those of us that are responsible by paying >min due & on time, not activating/using card, and paying w/in the "#'s same as cash", say a month or two earlier - seem to be the ones treated more poorly than irresponsible purchasers. Why? My thought is the credit card companies are betting they can get 60-70% of the higher interest rate debts (those w/interest rates jack up to >20%) than those of us who have reasonable rates <9% - the rates we EARNED to use.
  • Credit Line Inpact on Credit Score
One thing I haven't seen addressed is, if your bank goes under, what happens to your credit line? We have balance transfers and pay >15% extra.mon. Reason: we have worked very hard >9 yrs to have our credit score >775, partly due to credit line vs outstanding balance is <15%. If bank goes under, do we lose this positive impact of credit line? We haven't seen any of our limits decreased. However, I will not take out another bal transfer: I do NOT trust any "offers" right now.
  • My credit limit was cut while traveling on business
I am three weeks away from closing on my first home. I have a Washington Mutual/Chase credit card that had a credit limit of $3500 with $2000 available limit. I always paid on time and paid large amounts of money $500+ every month because this is the card that I use for business travel. Needless to say when I went to rent a car on a business trip this week I live in Fort Worth and was in Virginia on business-my card was declined...I felt sick to my stomach because I was stranded. Thank goodness I had money in savings or I don't know what I would have done. Chase sent me a letter dated the 7th of May, I tried to use my card on the 11th of May...I did not receive my letter from Chase until I arrived home from my travel. I hope this does not hurt my chances of getting my loan on my home.
  • BOA is still at it - decrease credit limit w?o notice
My financial status has not changed and have been timely in paying my credit card. I do online bill pay and is quite timely in making payments. I have not had any late pmts for years. My credit limit was slashed in HALF without any notification. Late fees were charged the same day I received my ONLINE billpay. Due date was changed from the usual 30 to 3 weeks. I was not notified of any of these changes via email, phone and/or writing. When I called for explanation, I was told they can opt to do according to mandate. And, I have over $115,000 cash sitting in my various BOA account. I have been their customer for over 30 yrs. I never thought it can happen to me. My income, finances are secured and I'm just not a credit card person and do not believe in BIG credit limit. My merely $11,000 credit limit was slashed in HALF. Is there anything I can do?
  • B of A
I just received a letter from Bank of America stating that my credit line was reduced from 45,000 to 23,000 because of "the way I have historically used my account" (I carry a balance less than $1,000). Although I never intended to use my entire credit line, it was comforting to have the safety net and I relied on it to have a positive impact on my credit score. Shame, shame, shame on the giant monster mega banks for taking advantage of their loyal and dependable customers!
  • There is No Logic
William, There is no logic in any of this. The banking system is so corrupt, having bought off Washington for years. Now, because of their poor management and investment stratagies, they have almost bankrupted themselfs and the world economy. The only reason their not totally bankrupt, is that they got bailout money (our money) to keep them afloat. Now they have to develope all these profit making schemes to increase their profits. The only reason any of this is "legal" is because Congress (taking money from the banking lobby) never made it ilegal. I'm not a big fan of government intervention, but, the banking system is out of control. They have already just about sank the world economy once, now, Washington , unless they step in an regulate it, is going to let them sink it again. This time probably for good.
  • Absurd Follow-Up
After calling B of A, I went back online the next day - my $9500 limit had been re-established! Now while I am very grateful for that, after reading everyone else's experiences with various creditors, I also feel lucky - but still angry at the credit industry as a whole. They are not treating people fairly and this only gives the current Administration more ammunition to push bigger government and more regulation.
  • Absurd
I got an email from Bank of America that I had a new online statement available. I logged on, reviewed my charges and scheduled an extra payment. I had paid $2500 on a $3100 balance earlier in the week. I then noticed that B of A had decreased my credit limit from $9500 down to $5000 ! I immediately called Customer NoService and asked why they had dropped my limit - pointing out that I had never missed a payment, frequently paid the outstanding balance in full, or at least always made a payment 3 to 4 times greater than the payment due. The agent on the other end of the line told me that they dropped my limit because of "inactivity". I informed her that I was quite active in using my card and paying on time, etc. She said that I had never charged the full limit on the card!!! No kidding. B of A is penalizing me because I never maxed out my card!!!! I told her that I was on vacation and had received no warning or notice. I told her that I used that $9500 limit as my safety net - should I have unexpected medical or other emergency type bills. Now for the absurdity: She told me that they would offer me a line of credit UP TO $30,000 !!! They dropped my credit card limit by half because I never maxed out the card but were willing to offer me a line of credit worth 3 times the limit of the card !!!! Can someone please explain the logic in any of this? I mean, what the heck is going on ? By the way, she transferred me to another department, I got a message saying that department was closed and then they hung up.
  • Dang funny
And even when they warn you they might close is early. I received a letter from Citi stating that I had to use My AT&T "Lifetime" Mastercard by 5/15/2009. Well I just tried to use it today (4/17) and it was declined. I just called Customer Service and the the laughing Representive said that it was closed on 4/12 but would be restored. Darn funny of them.
  • Credit card account closed.
I received a letter this past weekend from GE Money stating that the credit card account(MasterCard) that they had issued to me was closed due to inactivity and that a statement would be placed on my credit report stating that the card was closed by owner's (GE)request.

I purchased a television from BrandSmart in 2007 and used GE to finance the purchase. I paid the bill off within 6 months and never activated or used the card that was sent to me.

I don't want my credit report to be affected by this closing? Does anyone know what I can do to avoid this negative statement from appearing on my credit report?
  • Reducing Limits
Bank of America recently made an error in posting my payment and sent me a ridiculous letter saying that because of my late payments they are lowering my limit. I feel this is fraud. What can I do?
  • Juniper/Barclay
Claudia, I had a similiar issue with Juniper/Barclay. I hadn't used my card in over a year. I decided I better put some activity on the card. I made an online purchase but a couple hours later, found the same product locally and decided to go buy it for cash. I called the online vendor and cancelled the purchase. A week later, Juniper sent me a letter closing my account due to inactivity. My credit report states that it was closed due to customer request. That's not the truth, but I've been told it's better for my report to state that, than to state it was closed due to inactivity. I wonder though. Good luck all!
  • credit card
Wamu (chase) citibank, and capital one. Wamu sent a letter in nov cancelling my account for inactivity. I had not used for it two years bacause of a large apr. But the biggest suprise came from Citibank. We have 2 accounts. one my husband uses for business travel.THe limit on his card had been raised by the cc co until it was 21,200.00 This card is paid usually twice a month or more depending on when he is reembursed from his employer. So he leaves out of town and calls me to tell me that his card has been denied. I had just paid $7800.00 3 days earlier. My balance was 16,000. So I get online to see what is the problem and they had reduced my limit to 12,760.00 which of course makes me over my limit. So then they increaded my apr from 7.99% to 29.99%. So I called citibank and complained I had not received any notification about this. So I did get them to reduce the apr but they had changed it from a fixed rate to a variable rate and doubled it to 14.99%
They did not charge me an over-limit fee and said they did not report this to a credit agency. we always got fixed rate cards and did not know they could change them to a variable rate. These 2 accounts are the ones we use for drugs, gas and groceries because of the cash back. In fact I called right after talking to citi and cashed in my cash back and they sent me a check.
We have 4 capital one accounts Most are 0 balance. One we use for medical and had only a 5500.00 limit. Same thing . I went oneline to pay and the limit had been reduced to 1000.00. On one other cap one account that I rarely use because of the large apr has a limit of 17,500.00. I am expecting it to be lowered too. My concern is that my fico score well be low because of my debt to limit ratio. I have not canceled my 0 balance accounts because I was told it would affect my fico score. I guess if any of my cards start to charge an annual or monthly fee I will have to cancel..We are not in as bad a place as a lot of people are but I am angry because as others here have said, we have been good about paying off balances and living mostly on a cash basis and we get screwed because the cc companies can't get money from the ones who don't or can't pay. I feel like I should just declare bankruptsy and not give them a red cent. If my credit score is going to be ruined anyway, why not?
  • Credit Card shut down.
There was a good reason why we stopped using my Husband's HSBC Discover Card. After carrying a small balance, we received notice that the interest rate would rise to 16% in January. We immediately paid it off. We find that working with our local Credit Union is much more favorable when it comes to any credit. I was uncomfortable with working with these big national companies because they had become predatory. I didn't like the constant letters changing this or that coming in the mail. We didn't even get written notice that the credit limit had been reduced from $10,000 to $300 and surprize! The added a $1.00 monthly service fee!!!! I think the best plan of action for people who can fight back is to purge, pay off, get rid of, and never do business with the big Credit Card rip off companies again! Develop a relationship with your local credit unions. They have money to lend to good credit risks at much lower interest rates.
  • They just cut off 2 of my cards I paid early and half of the balance on!
I had 2 of my credit cards shut off just out of the blue! They let a company called acai berry put a charge that was NOT mine on the card (both of them) then when I disputed it they closed my account! WHILE I was on vacation! So, basically if you don't let them just charge whatever they want you cannot have a credit card anymore. THis was BOTH chase Bank Disney Visa and Juniper/Barclay mastercard cards! Now I have one card left which is Discover. They said they would not do that. It makes you wonder though. :( What a scam. Now that the accounts are closed, they have raised the interest so I have to pay more and owe more on a card that I cannot use!!!!!!!!
  • CapitolOne
I just received a notice in the mail from CapitalOne that the interest on my account was going from 8.9% to 29%. I've had this account for years. My credit score is over 800. I've never made a late payment or even a minimum payment. I usually do carry a balance, but not huge. I was absolutely furious and was going to call them, but the number listed on their notice was an automated to cancel the account if you don't agree to their terms. I came into work today and found out that a number of my co-workers have had the same thing happen to them. Now we're all mad. I guess we're all going credit card shopping.
  • BOA Credit Cards
I called to ask if they could decrease my interest rate. They told me they could not but try back in 6 months. I got a letter 3 days later stating that my account had been closed because of my inquiry into the interest rates. My husband got a letter stating that because I am an authorized user on his account they were closing his as well. We have excellent credit and do not carry a large balance. I am not sure what is going on.
  • Citi Bank
I had 1,000 limit on card just paid 550.00 (income tax) got a letter they decreased to 500.00 I have been a loyal customer. I have had this card for almost 2 years. I never been late, Always made payments on time even twice a month. You decrease my limit after I just paid half of it off. All because I am late on my car payment. You cannot use past due medical bills on my credit report that is illeagal. Then you dont even have the decent to email me. I get a letter.
  • Back of the wallet cards
Add CAPITAL ONE to the list of idiots. I have been a customer for 17 years and they cancelled my account for lack of use. What are these people thinking? Cancelling the folks that CAN pay their bills.
  • Bank of America
I went to pay my BOA credit card payment and noticed my limit had been decreased by $9000. The card was almost maxed out. They did this to my other credit card 5 months ago. Now, I have little or no room for spending on my cards. Not good for a mother of two!

I called and got no help. Can anyone give advice.
  • Carnival SeaMiles MasterCard
I have a Carnival SeaMiles MasterCard wiht a balance. I went on a Cruise the week of Dec 15th. I put a $ 1000.00 on the card right before the 15th with anticipation of using it on the Cruise to you know get "SeaMiles". Well during the cruise, my limit was reduced. I had to put my Debit Card on the onboard account to cover remaining charges. Even though I had put the extra cash on the account, they reduced it to a new lower balance. Of course, on the cruise, I did not have a good way of checking on what was going on. Right after the cruise, I made one other charge, but later realized the change made to the limit. I was still under my original limit, but now over the new limit. Why did they allow the charge? They charged me an overlimit fee. I was able to have that credited back to the account. Then a couple of weeks later, I got to thinking, you know that interest was pretty high. They changed the rate from a APR of 15.24 (high I know) to 25.24. I called and explained to them unless they reduced to the rate back that to at least 15.24, I would cease payments until some sort of agreement could be made. I also wanted the interest credited (difference) back to the account. I've suspended the account and will wait to see what happens. They created this situation and now are trying to screw me over. I was looking forward to building up "SeaMiles", but now looking back, that was a bad idea. I originally obtained the card to transfer some other balances to a low 12-month 0% offer. I am sick and tired of getting screwed by these people. Now, the Feds are going to stiff us with the so-called Stimulus package as well. I am starting to feel like I don't care if I pay it back.
  • Your WAMU credit line
WAMU is reducing credit lines below your balance so that if for some reason you are late the late fee and interest will trigger an extra $35 over limit fee and will be added to your already late fee of $39 for a total of $74. This is an unethical practice that should not be allowed to happen. Not only are the banks taking are bailout money but they are also finding ways to get more from their customers while eliminating their line of credit.
  • Credit Shutdown
After BOA got bailed out they notified me
that my credit line was reduced and
closed out another account which I used.
  • Chase $120/yr fee, increase minimum payments due
In November, my Chase card also sent out an amendment to terms that they are now charging $10 per month (whether you carry a balance or NOT), which adds up to $120 per year. They also increased all minimum payments from 2% to 5% per month. I have excellent credit, never pay late, and I used my Chase card to transfer a balance for a low APR (2.9% until paid). My monthly payment went from $175 to $432. Needless to say, I have already transferred this balance to another card and will be closing my account. Too bad for Chase, they lost a customer who actually pays their bills on time.
  • Closed!!
Closed! my WaMu c.c.(now Chase)w/0 bal. and no activity in 12mo.. Closed! my Chase c.c.(I think,last4#only)w/0 bal.and no activity in 24mo.Which ones next? I am self employed single f., this very upsetting. It will have a major impact on my credit, last check my ficos 834. My payment history on my home of 10yr. and past credit card history has been the proof I've needed to show that I'm not a credit risk. This will blow my chance of getting into new home. Like everyone's said no contact info what so ever, no name, phone #. This is bad,I'm ------!!!
  • Credit reduction and interest hike
Walk all over ya Bank - minimum was 73.00 per month - got a bill last month over 300.00 plus they hiked my 7.5 interest to 29.9% and I got a letter that they were not coming down on the interest rate even if the federal reserve does. Amex also hit me with a finance charge on their limitless card - what is this coming to. I pay my bills on time and I feel like a second class citizen because of the government's mess - what's next?
  • Credit
I have to say that I agree with LB's post. Not everyone who carries a credit card balance is financially irresponsible. It's not all from shopping spree's and buying consumer goods that you have no need for. Granted this might be the case in a good many cases, but, most people use their credit properly. It's not from "people living beyond their means". There used to be "usery" laws that protected people from this cycle of preditory lending practices. It's even talked about in the Bible. I noticed that ever since this "financial meltdown" began it's seems like there are a whole lot of people and financial insitutions that just love to "blame the victims. I can understand it from the "insitutions", but not all of us are blessed with the same financial prosperity. So, if you done well financially, count your blessings and stop believing that everyone is just in debt because their not as smart as you.
  • Credit Cards
Clark, We really need someone to take this issue to the Sen. Banking Committee. When the banks and other financial instituitions (ie Wall Street) mis-manage there funds to the tune of billion of dollars they run to Washington for a bailout and get it. We pay for it. If a consumer is 30 minutes late with a monthly payment we get our interest rate doubled (even on existing charges) and our credit limited slashed. I understand that the banks want to minimize their risk, but, due to the hands off the financial industy attitude in Washington the last 15 years, the banks have no responsibility for anything other than keeping us all a slave to the "system".
  • Card Closed due to Inactivity Also
I had one of my Chase cards closed today. I had not used the card in 5 years and had no intention of using it. I thought it was strange that I would receive a rather nondescript letter just shutting down the card without an "option" to continue using the card. I believe it's actually the credit card companies cleaning their books and reducing the liability that they have on available credit. It's not a bad strategy since accounts such as mine are not in use and could potentially make them look bad. With little risk, they reduce the apparent liability on their books.
  • Chase Shutting Down Credit Cards
My Chase card was shut down due to inactivity. I'm not as upset about the card being shut down (although I am concerned it will adversely affect my credit) as I am what could appear to be a potentially fraudulent letter I received telling me about this. The letter does not contain a date, return address, the Chase logo, or any contact information for Chase. I'm glad to know Chase is setting a great example of how to commit fraud with consumers by making them think their account was closed while someone else could be continuing to use it. I'm glad my account is closed. I will never do business with Chase again.
  • Credit Card Reductions / Shutdown
While I appreciate all the comments posted, I feel some are a bit snide and narrow-minded. Not all credit card reductions are due to non-payment. I am a small business ownere and by necessity have several credit cards. ALL of which are ALWAYS paid on time or early with MORE than the MINIMUM balance due. Nevertheless, both Amex and Chase have reduced my credit lines to pretty much what I owe on these accounts. In doing so, they have caused me to be maxed out and negatively impacted my credit scores. If I have an excellent payment history, I feel this is unjust. My strong credit report is no longer stellar.
  • Credit Score
BOA closed my credit card for inactivity. Will that hurt my credit score? Ironically, they offered me the same card aftr the turned it off two weeks later.
  • addiction to credit
what all of this teeth gnashing shows is the abysmal addiction our society has with credit cards. In virtually all cases, people who carry balances on credit cards have in the past and/or are now living beyond their means. Otherwise, why not just pay off the balances and avoid the high interest rates or lower limits. After all, who cares if your credit card charges 30, 40, or 50% interest if you do not have to pay it? Who in their right mind would borrow money where the lender can at will change the interest rate or other key terms of the loan? Answer? Financial idiots.
  • Banks are run by idiots
I don't carry a balance on any of my credit cards. One I rarely use, a Citi Master Card, now has a $45K credit limit! The bozos at Citi keep raising the limit and it's now at an absurd level -- is it any wonder why Citi is in financial trouble?

For a while in 2006-07, Citi was sending my company pre-approved, $50K SBA loans. All the forms were filled out and the only thing missing was my signature. Maybe I'm weird, but I trashed these things thinks this is going to end badly one day. Looks like "one day" is finally here for Citi...
  • paying Credit Card bills
I set my billpay up to Automatically send a payment LARGER then usual minimum every
4 weeks. This way if I miss one or forget it automatically gets sent. I can then go in and adjust payments as needed.
  • I'm with John. All three of my credit cards have increased my limit because of my "excellent history" so I suppose the tightening credit makes it harder on those with questionable credit history (isn't that how it should be anyway?). I was even able to refinance a car a few months when all you heard on the radio was that it was virtually impossible to get ANY credit extended to you regardless of your credit standing.
  • I just had three cards closed on me this month. One was a business card and the other were both Chase cards that were not used in the past 24 months. This slightly lowered my monthly debt to credit ratio, but it is still lower than the suggested 30%. If I didn't have other cards open or low limits, this could have really hurt my fico score.
  • The opposite is going on here
Funny, as others are seeing their limits slashed, my credit card provider decided to INCREASE my limit this month!

Goes to show you that lenders will always be happy to lend to those who don't need to borrow.
  • shut down credit cards
Is it bad to the credit card companies to close your inactive accounts?
