Dec 08, 2008 -- Online deals are hot this holiday season

There are so many great deals out there on the web right now.

Cyber Monday was something of a bust this year, which highlights the fact that Internet sales likely won't continue enjoying the doubt-digit growth they've experienced over the last several years. Fortunately, the online retailers' loss is your gain. We are now in the midst of a clearance-oriented holiday shopping season.

DealNews.com is one website that Clark likes for keeping tabs on deals across the web. Each deal is ranked in terms of "hotness" on a scale of 1 to 5 circles, with 5 representing the best deals. Other similar sites that also aid online shoppers include Dealio and Google's Froogle.

Clark also likes Woot.com, which sells only one item per day and can be cheaper by far than anyone else. He tends to buy from them once every 5 weeks.

When it comes to buying online, it's very important to read the website's return policy. Some online retailers have awful policies, while Amazon and Zappos.com generally have favorable ones. Zappos is often thought of as the best customer service e-commerce site out there.

Meanwhile, whenever Christa makes an online purchase, she always checks to see if she can get credit for her child's 529 account by clicking through to an online retailer via UPromise or BabyMint. She estimates her online purchases have contributed about $1,100 to her daughter's college-savings fund in 6 years!

Is Upromise a good thing or not? I don't have kids but thought it might be a good idea for my nieces/nephew. Your thoughts? Thanks
  • Even they are more hotter in 2009 as well
    Clark,

Really cool list you have made. Even few people expanded it were also good. I want to suggest some new sites falling in same category of bargain hunting.

  • Beware shopping online
Scary as it has been to shop online, my worst fears has come true. An Old 2006 order was stuck under my name as my home address without me knowing it and a current purchase was sent to this old 2006 address without the person[as addressed] being at this old address. The company says it can not be redirect or correct the delivery by this multi-million dollar company. The delivery company was permitted to leave the package at the front door without verifying if the person was even at the address. Beware of check boxes that are stated as your home address. Now the company is holding my charge account hostage for payment on a non-delivered online purchase. I plan never to shop online at that store again.
  • Spoofee
Another great deal site is Spoofee. People post deals and other can rate the deal.

  • Zappos Comment
I was looking for a specific pair of Born shoes and found them on Zappos. I did some comparison shopping elsewhere, but they were all within the same price range. The standard shipping was free, so that is what I picked. I was surprised two days later when the shoes had arrived with a note that they upgraded my shipping at no additional cost. I definitely think they have the best customer service.
  • Another good site
I have used a site for years now that gives deals from many different companies. The Deals are usually on tech items, but every once in a while you'll see some clothing and shoes.

  • UPromise Tip
If you use UPromise, you have the option to withdraw the money and not deposit into a 529. Section 15(c) of the Member Agreement states, "2. Redeem as cash. You may request a withdrawal of any or all of the funds as a cash payment to you, in accordance with the procedures and subject to any fees we establish and as permitted by applicable law."
