Dec 03, 2008 -- How to pick solid long-term care insurance

Clark has long encouraged people in their late 50s and early 60s to consider buying long-term care (LTC) insurance, which pays for care in a nursing home, an assisted living facility or in your own home.

There's a misconception that Medicare will pay for this kind of care, but it won't. Medicaid, meanwhile, requires you to impoverish yourself before the government will pick up the tab for a nursing home. But what happens when you get better and suddenly you're broke? LTC insurance takes the worry out of the equation.

The industry, however, has been littered with fly-by-night operations and other unstable players. The latest blow comes from Conseco, which worked out a deal with Pennsylvania to dump its LTC obligations and essentially turn people over as wards of the state.

The solution is to only buy LTC insurance from a solid company, preferably one that has an A.M. Best rating of A++ or A+. It may cost you more now, but decades down the road you have a greater likelihood that A++ and A+ companies will be around.

One final note: LTC insurance isn't necessary if you're so wealthy that money is no object to getting the best care, or if you're so poor that being a ward of the state makes sense. That still leaves between 65% and 80% of Americans in the middle who could benefit from it.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Being Rejected for Long Term Care (LTC)
It sure would be helpful to know what the insurance companies are using to know if you qualify for LTC? Are there any set standards? I have a friend who was rejected twice and my wife was rejected and it is hard to tell what the reasons were?????????
  • Long Term Care
I bought my LTC with the Heartford through AARP but I don't see it listed on your AM rating. Did I make a mistake? I opted out on the automatic increase to keep up with the cost of living. Was that a bad move?
  • finacial rating
AM BEST is industry rating service and ratings recommended are true - Also need to check Weiss Ratings at weissrating.com which surveys fincial strength for insurance products by line and for other finacial service/banks
  • ltc
Shawn, I may have not been clear but I was given decision in writing and also by my agent.

The whole purpose is when Clark said on his show to wait until late 50's or early 60's to apply for ltc, well it may be best to do so prior to that. I am considered healthy at least according to my doctor. I think since I go to the doctor for whatever then that is not good either, even if there is no findings.

I believe NYLife did not want me from the word get go. Even though all misinformation was cleared up they came up with something else that was vague and reaching. My husband was practically approved on the spot. He too had issues in his history.

Oh well, point of story is to not wait if you are healthy now and be prepared to go through different companies.

    Thanks for your response.

cbr: if you never received a phone call you should call the agents back and ask them for a number that you can call to get the information as to why you were denied. If you do not have the agents number I may be able to help. Is there a way I can contact you? I am a NYL agent.

actually the findings were i was denied on information ( 3 items) that was in error. once that was corrected they came up with another reason, not originally listed. i can reapply in one year because they were concerned about my joint pain i had mentioned when i went to the doctor. the unfortunate thing is i never got a phone call to even go over my file. to report that my symptoms have resolved. my husband had one phone interview and no request was made for his medical records and he was accepted within a few weeks. i on the other hand had no interview they then requested the information and gave three reasons for denial, which like i said were disputed by a doctor cause they were wrong. then they came up with their new findings. you are right it is up to intrepretation. however it is a little discouraging at 51 when you feel pretty good and are doing things right to find out i should have applied for this insurance 10 years earlier. how do i get insurance if i am denied again? nyl was the first one i applied for. This is only an opinion but i do not think i should have to report being denied if the new company is going to get the records anyway. let them make their own assessment. if i had the insurance and was let go then that is another story.

plus our nyl agents did their part in explaining, but they really could not do anything.

CBR: There had to be stronger allegations than :"NY Life felt I was not worth insuring" Your statements are vague and I understand not wanting the public to know your medical history. NYL has some the best underwriting requirements in the industry! If you had been denied before from another carrier and you did nothing prior to re applying with NYL it is not NYL's fault. Nothing is up for interpretation, I truly hope your agent sat with you and explained the process that is used, if not maybe you should ask what the entire process is like. Also, I noted that you have not been back to the doctor. That's where it needs to start.

I am 51 year old female in good health. Unfortunately NY Life felt I was not worth insuring and said they would reconsider in one year and I would have to reapply. They picked apart my files and even when they had false information, we had it corrected they found something else which is quite vague. I am hoping to get picked up by someone. But they do ask if you have been denied previously, which of I of course I have to acknowledge.
I would think applying for it when you are younger and healthier will be better than waiting, plus the premiums will be less. I never thought I would have been treated like this and I find it scary. Bottom line do no go to te doctor. They document it all and it is up for interpretation. The issues they mentioned I had have resolved with proper diet and exercise and ergonomics in my work station. But we usually do not go back to the doctor if we get better. Just thoughts.

So Clark is still trusting these rating companies???
  • LTC INSURANCE RE: CONSECO _Pennsylvania
Does this apply to CONSECO in PA only?
How about CONSECO's subsidiaries? How about such policies in other states? You used the term "Wards of the State".
Does this mean just those already receiving benefits? If so what about those not yet receiving benefits, are they just losing all that has been paid thus far. Are the Auto Draft payments going to be stopped immediately?
