Dec 03, 2008 -- Just say no to an automaker bailout

The automakers are in the midst of their begathon appeal to Congress and the president. While political talk show hosts have been all over this story, Clark wants to discuss it from an economic perspective.

GM sales are down some 40%, Chrysler is down some 50% and Ford is down around 30%. The American people have spoken -- day after day, purchase after purchase -- and said they don't want the products the Big 3 are making.

This is not, however, a diatribe about the American worker. It's really general management that has failed. Case in point: There was a GM plant in Fremont, California, that was just about the worst plant since the days of the Yugo. Toyota took the plant over; hired back the exact same workers who were employed there under GM; and it went from worst to first within 2 years. Again, there's nothing wrong with the American worker; it's management that's at fault.

Now we have the Big 3 coming to us and begging to get them out of their management failures. GM says it could fail in a matter of weeks. They're trying to create a sudden sense of urgency.

Capitalism allows you to file for bankruptcy, reorganize in Chapter 11 and try to make a go of it again. That's how the system should work. It should not entail us being told to empty our wallets because the Big 3 didn't make cars that we wanted to buy.

In capitalism, if a business is allowed to fail, the marketplace allows other more efficient businesses to survive. We pervert the system by bailing out manufacturers who have inefficiencies. Of course, the Big 3 will cloak themselves in the American flag during their begathon, but what they're really looking to do is put capitalism in a straightjacket.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

What others are saying

  • Bank Bail out
Right after Bank of America received their first Taxpayer funded bailout money. I received a notice that they are raising almost all fees.
Would not this have been a good time for Congress to place some restrictions and regulations on the banks ripp-off fees.Once again the working tax paying Americans get rear-ended.HOw long will we put up with this?
  • This buy out thing
ok i think this buy out thing is over rated. so if i cant afford my house anymore does this mean i can go to the capital and ask for money and have my fellow tax payers pay for it for me? no it doesnt. So why does the big 3 get to do it? they desided to change what cars they make with out really listening to what america wanted. and now its taking them not makeing any more money to buy there bigger houses or bigger jets to think of listening. what the government should do is give the big 3 a loan with a set intrest rate that the govermetnt then puts into another type of account so that grows and maybe can lower our debt with the payback from the loan. just a suggestion...
  • Automaker bailout
I agree with Clark. The big three should deal with their own problems. Reorganize and try to make it work if you truly care for your employees. There are many small business owners that lost their homes and many others not far behinde because of the economy situation but you don't see them running to the govenment for a bailout. They are having to face a grim future with their credit ruined because they couldn't servive in this economy. At least Alan Mulally, Richard Wagoner and Robert Nardelli will still have their homes and money unlike Steve and his family who live in a homless shelter right now.
  • Big 3 Bailout
I have noticed that the Big 3 have not ceased their Jet Setting around on their Big Jets. I guess we can pay for that too.
  • Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde Car Companies
The car companies want to PROFIT under a capitalistic system then BEG for a handout like a bunch of socialists? It's schizophrenic and Clark's right: file Chapter 11.
  • Bail out to car companies
Bailing out the car companies would be what we call in pschology a "positive reinforcement for a negative behavior.
  • GET THE FACTS BEFORE PASSING JUDGEMENT
Clark, I use to respect you, but NO MORE! You've used your celebrity status to worsen an already bad situation with your comments. This may not all fit so I'll post more if needed. I am a 22yr employee with a local dealership that services GM vehicles. Am I totally for a bailout - NO! Do I agree their are problems with the Big 3 - SURE. But, I would ask you first to think before you speak. Alot of people think your "WORD" is the gosple itself and some of what you say is damaging to those of us that are trying to make a living in this industry that do not get the benefits that the UAW workers have. I work on total commission basis, my health care is paid by myself at a sum of $200.00 a week, I get 5-paid holidays and two weeks vacation that most of the time I cannot afford to take. I am the father of 2-handicapped children that require special therapies that my wifes whole pay check goes towards paying that is not covered by my insurance. So, while I am sure the tough talk is good for the radio and to get people fired up as you've accomplished. Please realize their are hard working people such as myself that you are hurting with your rants that are associated with this industry that are just trying to make a living and do not receive any of the perks that are being mentioned. So, in the long run with all the anger you have created I hope you will keep me in mind with many other casualties this will cause in the end. Thank you
  • Chapter 11 or Charity?
If Big 3 dont have stomach for free market system, and for that matter anyone else, go do business in Cuba. Free market system tends to weed out lazy, outdated, uncompetitive. Let the chips fall where they may, and industry will learn from its mistakes. Chapter 11 does allow reorganization in our system, but these guys are looking for charity!
  • BIG 3 BAILOUT
What a bunch of hypocrits. Most of you ranting in here right now are probably owners of one of the BIG 3's aoutomobiles. The only reason most of you even care is because gas prices sky rocketed the past 2-yrs and it hurt your wallet trying to fill the gas tanks of the suv's you once loved. Now you want to turn on the companies you use to support and say they build crap. Well "BULL". I hope each and everyone of you sell-outs get what you deserve when you too loose your job. Hey, maybe your new foreign friends will hire you modern day hippies. No need for any country to ever take us by force when we have such willing idiots to sell it out to them. Oh, AND GUESS WHAT? I am not for the bailout either, but I am first an AMERICAN that believes we can get through this without turning our backs on our own and inviting in the foreigners to save us! Also, try studying up on what your talking about first and not just repeating what you hear in the news media! Theres alot more things that caused this problem than just the automakers in the U.S.A. If your precious foreign car competitors had to play by the same rules you would be wanting to hang them too. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CAMPAIGNE
  • Bailouts
I don't agree with the govt bailing the big 3 out nor any other companys. Why didn't they do that for the apparel/textile business? Difference here? The Big 3 are just years later...but the same amount of jobs are gone elsewhere with no help from government. I don't want my money that I pay in taxes to be 'thrown to the wind'....
  • bailout of the auto industry
it is absolutely ridiculous that we have to bailout these damn auto companies. i have emailed just about every congressman in my district to tell them not to do it. let em go down. we will recover.
  • Bailout for Big 3
I also agree with Clark! Let them file bankrupcy like everyone else and start again. Why should our government bail out companies that overpaid their employees for years through a union. Americans don't like what they are getting from these car companies. Wise up! Make better products that will work for todays economy - Again start over, but without a bailout.
  • Bailout & car buying
When the bailout goes through, and that will happen.
It will make my car buying choices much easier. I will NEVER, EVER buy another vehicle, product(s) from either Ford, GM or Chrysler, nor any of their associates, affiliates. The bailout is all the money of mine you will see.
Hello Hyundai, Honda & Toyota !!
  • Big 3 Bail Out
I have been a GM dealership employee since 1972 & a regular listener to your show for many years. While I do not always agree with you, Clark, I appreciate your opinions, advice and viewpoints. I listened to you blast the Big 3 on last evening's show & ask that you and your listeners do a little more research before you pass judgement on the US auto industry. Please visit www.gmfactsandfiction.com to get some up-to-date information about GM and its products. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised on GM's quality and customer satisfaction accomplisments. Unfortunately, negative perception is adversely affecting our ability to do business at this time along with extremely tight credit markets...above & beyond the Big 3's control. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion.
  • FOREIGN CAR BUYERS ARE TRAITORS
    Wake up!

The real issue is how stupid we'd be to allow the last major segment of American manufacturing to be broken apart and bought up by our foreign competitors in a bankruptcy. Every nation in the world, except ours, use tariffs, currency manipulation, outright ownership and other tactics to support their auto industry. They do so for national security and economic survival.

If GM, Ford, and Chrysler go into bankruptcy, then China, South Korea, and Japan will buy the factories for 5 cents on the dollar. They'll employ Americans at sweat shop wages and bring in their own engineers and management. All of the raw resources will come from us but the profits, technology, and development will flow back to them. They will have colonized our country without firing a shot.

Don't think it could ever happen? Look what happened to the steel industry or our television manufacturing.

So. Korea exports 700,000 vehicles/yr to the USA but imports less than 5,000.
  • military industrial complex
I heard some of theses union guys claim that tanks, jeeps etc. couldn't be built again if we had a another war-time need for this equipment?? Come on!!
  • Bail Out
Enough is enough! We should have never
    started bailing out private businesses.
  • Bailout handout
So I guess it is fine for anyone to run a business into the ground, and run to congress and plead "my" case. Granted the bank bail out may have been needed, but without it, I don't feel the dumb 3 would have ran to congress on their own accord. But what do I know. : ))
  • auto bailout
I agree with Clark. Let them file bankrucpty and start again.... $71.00 hr. union workers employed for life is ridiculous.
  • Bailouts
Can someone explain to me why AIG and Citigroup etc. are any different and deserved a bailout?
  • Address The Problems
Bad management, it's apparent they don't know what they are doing. They have been bailed out before and now they're back for more. Executives getting multimillion dollar bonuses while their companies are failing, get a clue. Oh, now the Big 3 CEO's are saying they will work for $1 next year. Well, I guess so, since you all have received those multimillion $ bonuses for how many years?

Make cars that people want to buy. Why is it that the American Big 3 automakers are always the "johnny come latelys" when compared to the foreign car manufacturers who come up with new and exciting designs and technology?

Unskilled workers who are getting paid $30hr., plus all the bennies that go along with being a Union member? Cut their pay in half.

First the Big 3 were asking for $23B now they want $34B! Tell me, what are they going to do with the money to turn things around?

Fire all of the top management and get someone in there who knows how to run a business. It is quite apparent that they are totally incompetent. I thought that was one of the requirements for a bailout, but I don't see anyone volunteering to step down or other big changes being made.

If you own your own business and you make a product that people don't want, can't afford or you make other bad decisions that causes you to lose business to the point of failure, Uncle Sugar isn't going to bail you out. I guess you have to be a super large company with a lot of overpaid employees to qualify for a handout.
  • Wow....
1.5 to 2 BILLION people are going to lose their jobs? Surely you mean 1.5 to 2 millon?
  • My fear of NO bail out
What about the hardworking people that work for these companies or retired. I understand the frustration of not wanting the government to bail them out, but look at the economy people it is going to get worse next year. There are going to be over 1.5 to 2 billion people that are going to loose there jobs next year. Where do you think we are going to be then? If people aren't working then they are not buying nothing. They will be struggling daily. Looks like we are going backwards, and we should be prepared for a depression a time that most of us have never even imagined. Ask your grandparents if they lived during those times and how hard it was. Get ready cause it's going to happen. No matter what the government will either bail the auto industry or every american that looses their job thru unemployment benefits which is nothing compared to what they currently make in their jobs.
  • Bail Out
I am not in favor of the bailout. I worked in the Transportation sector with a Unionized Company for 21 years. I do not think it is a Union problem in total but I do agree that for a non-skilled position it is extreme pay. What I have a problem with is Americans have never supported big 3 cars and what would change. We cannot make people buy them. It is extremely sad that people must lose their jobs, but the weak will fall and the strong and innovative will survive and grow. It is an ecomonic fact. I do,as a lifetime Management employee, blame the Management. The fact that they have not changed anything in years is there fault. The innovation, the production, the Marketing, etc...All their fault. What have the Management sacrificed over the years to change---nothing! Again, I am sorry, but I cannot approve financing this based on past history. Sad as we have, as Americans, lived so well. This is a tough time and the big 3 have not prepared themselves to compete in not only the US, but globally and it suffering. And I do not think the Union is ready to take a hit for a long time. They may for a while, but you can bet when times get better, they will be right back at the negotiations table and we will be back at the same point. I speak from experience. Big Question: When the CEO's went to Washington and flew there own jets, why did they not have a concrete plan on what the Union was going to do. Now that there is some doubt about getting the money everyone wants to talk. Should have been done many, many years ago. Sorry, but I feel it is too late.
  • automaker bailout
No more bailouts. I live in a community with a Ford plant. In the past, I have been told by these plant workers about things such as :
Don't buy a car made on a Friday, Monday, or befor a Holiday because many times the workers just don't care on those days. Workers who hold other jobs who sleep while at Ford to rest up for their other job. Workers having to come and sit in the plant cafeteria all day to collect their pay instead of just being laid off. Management is incompetent and many workers are as well. Let the automakers sleep in the bed that they have made!!!!!!
  • Stop Believing Everything You Read!!!
Autoworkers have NEVER made anywhere close to $70 an hour!! I know many personally, for many years. Please STOP wishing that hard working people lose their good jobs. What is wrong with you people?? What do you want for this country, everybody to have a really bad job? People who work and make good money go shopping, travel and out to eat. It good for everybody---let's root for each other to suceed, we are all Americans here. Otherwise, stop telling everyone patriotic you are. Whew, I feel better now.
  • No Bailot - Contact you congressment
This seems more about perpetuating UAW stranglehold on the automakers that actually help the auto mfgs fix their business . All of the bailouts (banks, wall street ) are a big fraud on the US taxpayer by the oligarchy .

Contact you congressman and tell them no bailouts for the Big 3 .

  • Management
Hear! Hear! Management is the problem but the rich guys running the plants try to pin failure on the worker.
  • Bailout
Lets keep to the facts here, Yes the management has been terrible, and yes the unions have helped in the downfall of these firms. But the facts are: the $70 an hour thrown around includes all the benefits, retirement etc... the workers do not get "paid" $70. Also if the companies fail, who do you think takes over all the pensions? You are right the US Gov't/taxpayers. There is a reason that most companies in the US do not offer pensions anymore - this is a prime example.
  • Why a Bailout?
I don't see using the hard-earned money that the government extorts from me to bail out companies whose management has completely lost touch with reality. These execs make millions in salary and bonuses; their workers make an average of $81 an hour and they need a so-called "bailout"? Sorry...I don't make anywhere near that amount and I am struggling to support not just myself and my husband, but also our daughter, son-in-law and infant grandson who have fallen on hard times through layoffs. Bankruptcy would absolutely be the best thing for these companies!
  • Bailouts really another rescue for large investors?
Is the hidden agenda behind the bailouts an attempt to save Cerberus & the other large investors? Bankruptcy sounds like the best course to me
  • Union jobs will be protected at taxpayer expense
The UAW and their cohorts elected Obama and their lobbyists have short leashes on many top Democrats in Congress. They will get their bailout - oops, I mean rescue - and you and I will pay for it. The UAW can't stand to lose any members or see it's collections decline. After all, it's hard to find assembly line jobs that pay $70/hr these days...
  • cash burn
with a conservative cash burn rate of $8 billion a month, i would expect the chief grovelers to head again to dc to such another round of tax dollars to fund failed business models. It will be years, if ever, before they can have any vehicles for sale that are profitable that americans want to buy. If these 3 overpaid mouthpieces insist that this is not a "bailout", but a loan, if I were chair of these congressional hearings, I would send them packing inside 5 minutes and tell them to go to a bank. They make "loans".
