Dec 02, 2008 -- Blockbuster launches on-demand movie service via Internet

Back in June, Clark told you about Netflix's partnership with Roku for a $99 set-top box that delivers on-demand flicks directly to your TV via the Internet. A monthly subscription fee of about $9 is also required to have access to some 10,000 movies.

Now Blockbuster has launched a competing on-demand service. Their box sells for around $100 and that price also allows you to watch your first 25 movies for free. Following that, you'll pay $1.99 for older titles and $3.99 for new releases.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

Why pay anything for movies? Hundreds of recently released movies, Academy Award winning films, and classic flicks are yours for the asking at ... your local library! You may be within just a few miles of several town and city libraries, not to mention what the community college library offers to the public. Most states have a state-wide borrowing system that will fulfill requests for items your local library doesn't have. In these times you can't be too frugal. Borrow, don't rent (and certainly don't buy!).

forget netflix and blockbuster go redbox for just a dollar!
  • netflix & tivo
netflix is making a deal with tivo to stream movies. Tivo will act as the set top box.
  • netflix
I agree that Netflix does have the better deals and continues to outperform Blockbuster every step of the way. I am so glad I no longer rent videos from places like Blockbuster!
  • netflix
Netflix just added most of the Starz catalog to their instant viewing catalog. THere are now more than 10000 to watch. Also, the 9.00 fee includes DVD's by mail, which are generally newer releases.
  • Roku
It sounds like nexflix is the better deal, for $9.00/month you can get about 7 movies and watch all you want via the roku, i love mine.
