Nov 21, 2008 -- Debt collectors facing tough times reclaiming money

Debt-collection agencies are reporting big losses, according to The Wall Street Journal. For example, one agency owned by Chase lost $15 million in the last 90 days because their level of collections has dropped. People are tapped out and you can't squeeze blood from a turnip!

The Wall Street Journal also reports that as collectors are getting more desperate, they're also engaging in more illegal activity to try to get money. There are reports of collectors cussing at people and threatening them with jail or physical harm. One caller to the show even told us that a collector told her 7 year old, "Mommy is going to jail."

For more on the nuances of dealing with collectors, see Clark's recent discussion of the issue.

Stop being harassed by collectors! Send them a "drop dead" letter.

  • Wrong Person
Earlier this year when I switched phone companies I had a bad experience with a debt collector who continued to call looking for Jose on my new number ..... After repeated requests to stop I then simply collected the info from the collector, including ssn and bill info about Jose and wrote a letter including the info to the better business bureau referencing the collector. I don't believe they should share this info with anyone because its illegal to do so and if nothing else it is further proof that the collector did wrong. The calls stopped immediately after the collector forwarded the info back to the collector! They repled back to the bbb and stated they updated their information.

What do you do when a collection agency is convinced you are the person they are looking for, but you are not? I have explained this over and over. They promise not to call again, but I average 3 calls a day, 5 days a week. I cannont find the company's name nor can I track it by the phone number. I also cannot block the call. HELP.
