Nov 20, 2008 -- U.S. inspectors to vet goods before they leave China
Are you concerned about the safety of goods from communist China? The tainted pet food, the lead in children's toys, the melamine in dairy products. It's enough to scare any sensible consumer.
Ferreting out a suspect product after it's been put in a container and shipped to our ports is like looking for a needle in a haystack. That's why the United States has struck a deal to have U.S. inspection offices on Chinese soil. The goal is for U.S. employees to monitor goods in communist China before they leave the factory. The communist party agreed because they want to make sure Western consumers don't lose confidence in their products.
Clark often takes calls from people who feel that we should just put barriers on trade with foreign nations. There's a tendency to want to call a "timeout," but our global economy doesn't work like that. Free trade is ultimately responsible for making our society and others much wealthier.
Of course, if you lost a job at a factory because of outsourcing, Clark knows his words ring hollow and may seem callous.
But the reality of economics is that jobs continually shift. We have to be lifelong learners who can adapt our skills to a new climate. Clark thinks about the way his show has changed and adapted to new technologies over the years. If he never changed, he would be an extinct dinosaur.
Creative destruction dictates that long-term growth requires old industries to fall by the wayside so new ones can spring up. Think about all the people who trained in Morse code to be telegraph operators. Then the telephone came along and made telegraphs obsolete.
The bottom-line is that we have to continually adapt. You have to seek the skills that will allow you to create a paycheck as jobs disappear and new ones are created.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.
So many American manufacturing plants haver shut down due to outsourcing, if we ever have to go to war, we are screwed. One world economy, one world government. A true right-wing idea. God help America because we are not helping ourselves. What new industries are replacing the millions upon millions of outsourced jobs? No one has ever answered this question.
U.S. inspectors to vet goods before they leave China
I have no problem with using US Inspectors to check Chinese products in China prior to being shipped here. But I think the companies importing the products should pay the salaries and benefits of those inspectors. It is ultimately their responsibility. Why should American taxpayers pay a service those companies make money on? Maybe if it cost more for those companies to buy Chinese, their profit margin might be lowered enough to encourage them to buy American. wb2uu
good luck
Trusting inspectors. Hah. Inspectors are only slighty effective even here in U.S. And you want to trust ones on foreign soil. That's assuming they are even given access to 10% of what's going on in China.
China like many other eastern countries is the wild west of capitalism. What we have here doesn't even begin to compare. There are some many regulations and barriers to market entry. So buying things as always is buyer beware. If it is too cheap, it probably is. Don't be deceived by the walmart mentality. Quality is worth paying for.
Don't buy from China!
As an Asian, I have stayed away from ALL the "Made in China" products. This includes fish, produce, etc. I saw a news clip a year ago on how salmons are caught and shipped over from China - quite disgusting and made my stomach churn! I concur with the previous comments - U.S. Inspectors will NOT have the capability to ensure ALL China products are safe before arriving in the States. The Chinese have always been very sneaky and they'll cut corners for their own sake! This is evident b/c the Communist Party have poisioned their own people with the milk formulas!

Efforts
US inspection offices have no been able to stop harmful products made here. What makes anyone think they will in China. We consumers want results not efforts.
Trade Barriers
I agree with most of the comments. However, I think that the emphatical tone of no trade barriers ever is unrealistic. I would agree if it were a level playing field. The reality is that the U.S. has a minimal number of trade barriers when compared to those countries that flood its shores with cheap goods. The U.S. cannot and has not been a viable competitor in this unlevel playing field. Some tit for tat may be in line.
