Nov 11, 2008 -- Save $1,000 on your cell bill with Metro and Cricket

Clark has a big announcement for your wallet that may make you want to rethink cell phone contracts. Metro PCS and Cricket -- 2 smaller players living in the shadows of the Big 4 carriers -- have teamed up to create what Clark calls the "poor man's" nationwide network.

For $45/month, both now provide unlimited calling in extended areas of the country. Previously, Metro and Cricket wouldn't tread in each other's market territory. But now Metro customers can use their phone in Cricket markets and vice-versa, thanks to a new agreement. So you can pay effectively half the price of what the Big 4 charge and get unlimited calling with no contracts.

With Metro and Cricket, all they do is save you money. You won't get the kind of sleek handsets you would with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile. But who couldn't use some extra cash in their pockets every month? A typical person can save $1,000 annually by making the switch from the Big 4 to either Metro or Cricket.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Prepaid Cricket
If you dont have the money for the plans with cricket it SUCKS!! the tech support is trash. Verizon has a better calling area than cricket is. Cricket messes with your bank account and the machines tax you like 15% of what you are putting in with.
  • cricket
cricket is cool! i used to be with T-mobile. i left them. i like cricket is unlimited everything for $50, no watching minutes. i don't even have a home phone, just cricket, it's unlimited and free long distance. their coverage keeps getting bigger too. pretty soon they'll be everywhere. i'm getting their broadband sooooon. they are the best priced, and the service is good. unlimited everything, who but cricket could do this LOL!!!
  • CRICKETT
IF YOU PAY FOR 3 MONTHS YOU GET THE 4TH ONE FREE.
  • us celluar incoming is free
for a business...i got incoming free and smart phones! cricket's phones r very $$$ and old!
  • cell phone cost
for low volume users (less than 250-300 minutes a month), i think t-mobile prepaid is the best value out there. Both my wife and i use it. A 1000 minute card, good for 12 months plus rollover for another full year if you buy ANY other card. We use each about 700 minutes a year and over a 3 year period we each spend less than $250 each/$500 total for 3 years of service. That is less than $15 a month total for 2 lines. Nationwide use, no roaming and relatively inexpensive in canada and mexico, especially for texting. And as a plus because their phones are gsm, if you travel outside of the u.s., canada and mexico you can swap out the sims for local ones. I buy the 1000 minute prepaid cards from callingmart for about $92 with no sales tax and instant email back of the activation code. My only advise is to not buy a new phone from ebay. most of them sold are from foreign markets or have other operational problems probably due to counterfeiting. There are alot of used razr phones in like-new condition available from people who dumped their plans. These phones are almost always originally bought from tmobile and are the real deal. In most cases (with a small amount of hassle), tmobile will give you the activation code to unlock the phone so you can use any sim chip in them in case you travel abroad and want to use the phone on another network.
The other bit of advise i would give when traveling abroad is to buy a pda, like a dell axim with wifi. You can easily pick up an axim, the x50 or x51 with built in wifi for $100 or so on craigslist or ebay. with the many hotels and public areas in both the u.s. and foreign countries having wifi access, mostly free these pda's seamlessly connect to the internet and allow you to send and receive email and get internet access. We always stay in communication in foreign countries by email only and it works very well and best of all, absolutely free without the hassles of buying foreign sim chips for cell phones or calling cards for landline phones.
  • What savings?
I'm sorry that should be $47. Also the 400 mins are roaming. Most of my calls are free w/mobile to mobile and in at&t area. W/rollover I always have about 1400 mins available. I just don't see the big savings w/ Metro or Cricket.
  • What savings?
I must be missing something, I pay $40/month for at&t (400 min w/rollover/nights and weekends) and $20/month for internet, email etc. My Co discount brings that down to $37/month. How will I save $1000?.
  • Cricket
I have no home phone only cell. Had Verizon for over 10 years. Paid about $120-145/mo for 2000 min.
Switched to Cricket @ $60/mo plan. Can talk unlimited in home area AND any area Cricket has service. Also with the $60 plan you get 200 roaming minutes/mo.
With any of the plans (the $50 and $45 at least) you can talk anywhere Cricket has service unlimited. If you travel you can BUY roaming minutes in your flex bucket.

As to the handsets, you can't get them deeply discounted as you can with the Big Four, but you pay full price. What "extra" you pay for the phone you more than save on monthly charges (No contracts thank goodness).

As to service... well, there are some dropped calls, especially in bad weather.
I like the service and the savings I am enjoying.

I live in Memphis and I travel to Atlanta and the NYC area alot. I kept my Verizon phone till the contract ran out mainly to use when I went to those areas, but with the Cricket $60 plan I can talk when I'm there with out worrying about outrageous roaming charges. (depending on how long I'll be in those areas, I may add to my flex bucket for more roaming minutes-- like $5 or $10 more. I I don't use all those minutes in the month they roll to the next till I use them up).

Overall I like Cricket. I'm very satisfied and I'll reccommend it!
  • Cheap way in
Even though Metro Pcs won't convert your phones with Sim cards, you can still win with their service. I found that you can buy a prepaid phone (I bought the Verizon phone)from Target or Walmart for only $29, take it to any MetroPCS store and they will activate it for around $30. This way you don't have to buy the phones from MetroPCS which starts at $99 and up.
  • Cricket
I live in the hills outside of St. Louis and have never been able to get any service other than dialup--no DSL, no cable. Even though I'm almost at the edge of the Cricket service area, it works great! And easy to install on any computer.
  • Net10 prepaid might might work for you!!
This is for Mike in Milwaukee & Karen in Virginia. My wife is now with Net10 it's great. The coverage is the same as AT&T!! LG600G with Sim card & Bluetooth!! net10.com Goodluck!!
  • You can't use your old phones.
The last time I looked at Metro PCS I wanted to continue using the phone that I had. But they didn't use sim cards. So you had to buy one of their phones. I like to save money but with only a small coverage and limited purchase of phones, I think I will stick with my Tmobile line.
  • Too bad they only cover big cities
Out here in the sticks we get AT&T and the local CDMA competitor (Cellular South instead of Verizon). Oh and Unicel, who uses AT&T's network in the immediate area, so the coverage is the same.

Cricket and Metro are at least 100 miles from me - lotta good *that* does!
  • cell phone
Cricket for me didn't meet my needs do to coverage. I have Quest tel. service & Broadband. I am going to bundle my Verizon cell phone with Quest. I'm very happy with my service. I also use magic jak for long distance.
  • trade off
What about signal coverage?! I tried T-mobile for a week before switching to cingular/AT&T. My co-workers had at&t and good signal where i had to walk outside to get even a little signal. This is in Metro Atlanta! a popular market. What's the real trade off? nothing's free!
  • Seattle area Sprint deal for $22.50 month
I have a deal thru Sprint. 300 minutes a month. Free weekends. Free after 7PM. The basic rate is $30 but I do get a Boeing discount which brings it down to $22.50. I don't have internet so if you need to surf the web on a 2 inch screen then stop reading right here. Now I haven't worked for Boeing for 9 years so I don't know but even paying full boat; not a bad deal unless your a real blatherer.
  • cricket is in Milwaukee seen it advertised
  • consumer cellular
i switched from the big 4 to consumer cellular to share a plan with my son and saved over half
  • Milwaukee has Cricket
They just started advertising here last week. Stores are popping up everywhere in Milwaukee...I've seen at least 5 new Cricket stores on the north side in the last week.
  • Happy with T-Mobile
I've had T-Mobile for 4 years and pay around 45.00 each month. I have not had much problem with the service. The only thing I wish they would do is roll over minutes as I never get very close to using mine up.
  • Cricket and Metro
I guess Milwaukee isn't a big enough market. Niether offers service here
  • Metro / Cricket cell phone
First, this is for Greg, the "Happy Cricket customer." I have had EarthLink for years and am VERY SATISFIED with them. If you are using Verizon home service, you can get DSL for $39.95 per month. I don't know what it is otherwise. EarthLink has caught viruses in emails others have sent me. I am staying with them.

The way you get the cheapest phone plan is to use it as little as necessary. Most of them start at about $40 per month. The more you talk, the more you pay. I time my calls for the free nights, weekends, and holidays.

I don't have a house phone. I use MagicJack. It works great. You just plug it into your computer, plug a phone line into it, and you can call anywhere in the US and Canada anytime for free. You can take it with you anywhere in the world, and if you have a high speed network, you can call back to the US and Canada for free. If you and someone else have a MagicJack, you can call each other anywhere in the world for free. It costs just $40 to buy and $20 per year (not month) to use.

The negatives with it are (1) You have to have your computer on to use it (2) 911 calls are handled differently. But for $20 per year I can live with it. I give out my cell number for people to call me. It it is during the day, and I am going to talk for a while, I ask them if I can call them back. If I can, I call them on the MagicJack.
  • iwireless purchased from Kroger
If you just want a phone and don't talk much this is a good option. I pay $80.00 per year.
  • best deal on cell phone
Unless you are a big talker, T-Mobile or Tracfone pre-paid is the way to go. My cell service, including international, is about $100 per year TOTAL.
  • cell bill
Funny that clark doesn't mention consumer cellular. If anybody wants to lower their cell bill and just wants a phone without all the extras they are GREAT. Tell em Jim sent ya
  • Cell phones
After "years" of being held hostage with an ATT contract. 2 years is a LOOONG time when you get absolutly customer NO service. I have moved to METRO PCS unlimited service for 50 bucks a month. Yes I did have to buy a no frills phone for $99 the start up was less than my ATT bill last month!
I highly recommend if PCS is in your area.
  • Cricket and their unlimiated broadband
I'm a "happy" Cricket customer, and just had another look at their website discovering that they now offer "Cricket Broadband Internet" service for $40 a month. It looks as if it'll work in my area (Portland)...has anyone tried this service? Reliable? Fast? Worth the money ?
  • Cricket
I just had a corporate transfer to the Portland market this past May. I had heard of Cricket before, so I gave it a try. I love the pricing, but I bought the cheapest phone offered at the time and regreted that. (However, I found some $5 extended life batteries that helped.) Now, I'm transferring back to Seattle and there is no Cricket availability:( Someone save me from the Mega Contract Killers!!
  • cell phones
I have verizon the cheapest plan possible for me and my husband it is 80.00 a month. I am wondering if the 45.00 for metro is a family plan if so it is a good deal if not then I am paying less which I think is too munch.
  • Metro PCS
I'm a prior customer of MetroPCS and I had no problems. I only switched to T-Mobile w/1500 Whenever Minutes for around $46.00/month because I moved out of Metro's coverage area. However, since I'm no longer in the country, and Metro has expanded its coverage I will definitely be returning to MetroPCS in December (T-Mobile contract expires). You can't beat unlimited local/long distance calls, unlimited text/picture messaging. The ONLY problem I had was the roaming charges.......WOW what a per minute cost!!!!
  • Metro service is bad
I had Metro for a few years and enjoyed unlimited minutes, but the service is bad. My calls would repeatedly drop in "good service" areas. Customer service is VERY poor. I had several different phones all with the same bad service. If you are willing to give up good service for unlimited calling Metro is for you. I switched from Metro to Verizon June 08 and enjoy good phone service and call quality.
  • T-mobile
I pay $45 (including tax) with T-mobile for 1500 minutes including roaming and long distance. I've never gone over the minutes. So far perfect service
  • Cell Phones
I just read your comment about the Cricket & Metro cell phones. I have a Virgin Mobile cell and I pay less than $39. per mo. I get 300 daytime minutes and 1000 unlimited week-ends and after 7pm. I am very happy with that. Tho't you'd like to hear?
  • $130/month? Really?
In order for a "typical person" to save $1,000 per year by switching to a plan that costs $45/mo, the plan the typical person currently has must cost $130/month. Do "typical" people really pay such prices? I spend about $100/year on my T-Mobile prepaid, and even $45/month seems outrageous to me. I can't imagine spending $130/mo. I realize that I'm atypical, but I'm not sure *how* atypical I am.
  • Not available in all states
I was disappointed that it is not available in my state of Virginia.
  • phone service
I don't understand because we have metro pcs in our area, but Cricket tells me they are not in my area
  • MetroPC
    I have T-Mobile at $29.99/total$36.02 per month. 300 min.p/mth;unlimited wkends;Nationwide plan.
MetroPC does not sound like a good deal to me.
    Thanks!!
  • Metro
Do you get roaming with the $50.00 plan???
  • Not Entirely Accurate
What you don't get with Cricket/Metro is unlimited roaming. In fact you get no roaming with the $45/month program, contrary to what Clark led us to believe. MetroPCS does provide free text messaging while roaming however, that is a bonus.
