Nov 11, 2008 -- White space spectrum promises free Internet across America

Clark has been annoyed for years that we have monopoly-provided Internet service in the United States. It stifles innovation and creates poor access conditions. In fact, we have a sub-Third World user experience and we pay more than most of the developed world.

But there is a ray of hope. After a major donnybrook, archenemies Google and Microsoft are working together to establish what's called "white space." This newly available spectrum will mean free Internet access all over America in the next 18 months.

The coming white space advancement is tied to the February 2009 conversion of TV stations from analog to digital signals. That conversion will free up the spectrum necessary to transmit Internet service for nothing.

Hardware makers are already gearing up to manufacturer portable gizmos that will allow you to go on the web for nada. We're not talking about vaporware here; this is real stuff that's going to happen.

Clark admits that he often gets drawn in by technologies that over-promise and under-deliver. But his recent track record of tech predictions included some good picks. Want proof? Look no further than his fascination with the cheap mini-laptops that have become a huge hit.

There's so much good stuff on the horizon. To paraphrase Churchill, "America does the right thing after trying every other alternative." We are on the cusp of a time when our Internet experience will start playing catch-up with the rest of the world.

  • Don't hold your breath
We all know how Clark gets excited about this stuff. "Everyone" can supposedly get at least "slow" DSL, and various politicians including PrezBO have been promising it for years. Your check is in the mail too.

The reality is that rural America is grievously under served. Just one exchange outside a metro area, my monopoly telco (Verizon) has not even put a DSLam in their central office even though they have been sending me offers for DSL for more than 10 years. They crow about how they are a "broadband and entertainment" company, all the while providing only plain old telephone service.

It will be cool if this stuff comes to pass. My wISP sure won't like it though. Meanwhile I am happy to pay him for marginal service because I will be pushing up daisies before Verizon does anything. Millions of rural Americans are waiting for it because satellite is jut not an option.
  • rural south carolina need cheap internet access!
I really need cheap internet access in rural sc, currently have an air card edge connection through mobile company but it is to $$$$! Dial up isn't an option...any ideas?
  • Free Internet
Clark, What about this hulu.com? Is it really free?
  • Free Internet Service - Big Brother Oversight?
I would love to have free internet access. Some neighborhoods in our area installing free wireless hubs. But I wonder who will have access to the details of our browsing histories when it is unregulated? And will we be at greater risk for identity theft?
  • Norm & cheapo
Americans "pre-filter" and "monitor" the Internet? That would be censorship!

    It won't happen.
  • Internet will be filtered
Better do some more research. All the free Internet globally is pre-filtered.
  • Joe?
Quite a pessimists view. Just like in your home you would be able to monitor and control the websites your children could go to. You will still have to pay for the websites even though the internet is free. Lighten up man and think of the advantages that will way outnumber the disadvantages!
  • FREE You-Know-What!
Isn't this wonderful! Soon all of our children will be exposed (no matter what we do or say) to other kids', adults', or advertisers' unregulated pornography on the free, public Internet "airwaves."

It used to be that children were protected from this because pornography was sold only to adults through a strict and limited distribution network.

Now it's going to be seen and available at the push of (somebody's) button.
  • White Space
Oh how I wish Australia would learn from the way Americans do things.. They dont just talk about things but they DO THEM!
