Nov 06, 2008 -- Behind the $5 billion Cerberus bailout in auto world

If you were upset about the $700 billion bailout, get ready to really blow your top. Cerberus Capital Management, which owns Chrysler and a joint stake in GMAC, received a $5 billion bailout from the feds in the days leading up to the election. That's because GMAC -- the financing arm of GM -- had become a wounded duck thanks to a spate of foolish mortgage lending.

You may recall that Clark grudgingly condoned the $700 billion that aided Wall Street. So why, then, would be opposed to the $5 billion bailout for Cerberus? Simple -- their collapse would not present the same kind of "systemic risk."

The only reason they got money is because of who they are; they count former Vice President Dan Quayle among their ranks.

Cerberus next wants to engineer a merger of Chrysler and GM, which would require more taxpayer money. It's being marketed as a way to stop imminent job losses. No way, says Clark. If we allow them to merge with our money, the real purpose will be to help the fat cats at Cerberus. Workers will lose their jobs anyway; we're way oversupplied in the car market and have too many factories as well.

If you're an autoworker who's now mad at Clark, realize that he truly doesn't believe your jobs would be safe with a bailout. The bailout would be solely to save the wealthy influentials. Of course, Clark would love to have a Cerberus rep come on air and dispute what he's saying.

One last thought: What kind of example do we set for the rest of the world when we start bailing out losers with the money from the winners? That's crony capitalism, that's a Third World kind of capitalism.

Yes, it may seem like Clark has a split personality. He supported the financial bailout as a necessary evil -- after all, capitalism requires capital to function -- but he's opposed to the Cerberus bailout. But it's a whole different game when you're being asked to take care of an industrial organization that didn't manage itself well.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • What to do now?
How can I find out more information about this bailout and exactly which politicians supported it?
  • Cerberus Bail Out
Clark has it right. Money from Government to Cerberus will only go into the pockets of the private equity and Company management guys involved. No jobs will be saved by transferring money from Washington to those guys. The Only thing that will save jobs(long term) is learning how to produce vehicles that are safe AND fuel efficient and priced at levels that blue collar workers can afford and that the non-USA producers cannot competetively match without a struggle. That means getting real on the USA costs structures and a gradual move away from non competetive USA union wages. That is not a slap at Unions but it is a wakeup call that the decline of union membership nationwide has been trumpeting for several years now.
  • Tax Payer Gifts !!
I'm disgusted!! Failure of Cerberus does not effect the economy unlike the banks. These clowns should be sent to jail not to the penthouse

WOW!!!! VERY INTELLIGENT!!!!!!!! and VERY CORRECT TOO!!!! That's how you do it in politics!!! If everyone in this country did their responsibility and did that--TELL THE PEOPLE making the decisions that affect...well now...the whole world (we are all so linked)...and tell them what you don't appreciate-well, there's strength and there's power in numbers. what have we learned from our mums and dads and Uncle Clark? WALK WITH YOUR DOLLARS (and your votes :-)!

That's the ONLY leverage we have and it only works if ALL of the people with gripes and complaints actually well...gripe and complain responsibly!

    ROCK ON RAY!!!
  • Cerberus Bailout
If any of your still thinks the government works for the people you are living in a dream. The government we have now works for the corporations. Cerberus, a private equity firm was about to lose its shirt over Chrysler. The government jumped in to save its fat cat friends.
  • Cerberus Bailout
For those 100 million of you who don't know how to vent, how about going to the Investor Relations page of one company whose stock you own. Look for the "contact us" or email information. Send a short note telling them how upset you are with executive compensation and Board of Director complicity in the matter.

As for the auto workers, specifically the UAW, they won't get my sympathy either. Consider the some of the most senior workers make over $100,000. Many of them have been putting the same part on a vehicle for more than a decade. (I know this from talking directly to people in a Ford/UAW plant). Want more to get angry about? Go to the National Review web site and read about the UAW forklift driver making $103,000 while the national average for that work is less than $30K. Consider that the average wage of suppliers to the Big 3 automakers is about $17 per hour. Suppliers are beaten up regularly about prices to make up for wages at the Big 3 that are more than twice as much. The healthcare benefits the UAW fought for are WONDERFUL but...they are unsustainable without unions kicking in.

Remember, I am no fan of what top maangement is still taking out of the auto industry. Rick Wagoner at GM had his pay reinstated this year to a base of $2.2 million after a one-year cut. How is that pay justified based upon this year's results?

Again, if you want to do something positive, write to Investor Relations. If you own mutual funds only let them know how you feel about executive compensation and that you will consider a change if they don't start voting your interests when it comes to Boards of Directors and pay packages.

Don't wait for the government to save you from everything unless you still expect your Mommy to still do your laundry and give you cookies and milk before bedtime.
  • Cerebus bailout
Allrighty then! Saving ANOTHER overgreedy company...Did not catch this item on the news; perhaps the media is trying to prevent a riot??? All of the middle class is suffering; losing precious retirement funds in the midst of higher prices and layoffs. Please tell me who was responsible for THIS latest debacle...saving a poorly managed company, AGAIN, with OUR money! Did you all note that Wall Street will INDEED be handing out bonuses....For a job WELL DONE????? I am unsure where to vent my outrage at all of it. Why the little guys must be the rescuers of so many RICH, GREEDY businessfolk is just beyond me. We as a people REALLY need to rebel in a way that catches the attention of officials...Time to dump tea into waters???
  • Cerberus $5 Billion Bailout
Agree with Clark......the government is just taking care of their "buddies" who also have one of the lowest approval ratings on earth.......this has nothing to do with smart business........we should offer $5 billion to Cerberus (Chrysler and GMAC and/or GM) at $1,000 per auto or "vehicle" sale that uses alternative fuels or gets over 40 miles/gallon..........this would positively effect 5,000,000 auto buyers, help fund alternative fuel auto production and reduce carbon emission........instead our government is giving a gift to the auto industry that has failed to keep up with customer, environmental and basic smart business practices.
  • Bailouts
Bailouts are BULL$#!+. If I get in trouble nobody is going to bail me out! Nor do I expect them too.
  • Voter Rage
This is just another example of why we fired so many politicians in this last election. We voters must stick together and vote out every last politician who had anything to do with this. We must teach them a lesson and show them who's boss.
  • What about Chrysler retirees and their spouses?
My late father spent 37 years working hard for Chrysler Corporation to provide for my mother in her golden years. Now she is now part of the "legacy costs" the media talks about. I'm working two jobs, seven days a week and can barely support myself- how will I take care of my mother if Chrysler folds? Chrysler is the largest employer in her hometown and I'm afraid that it will become like Flint, MI was in Michael Moore's film.
  • Thanks Clark
Thank you for giving us this very important information Clark. I have emailed my Senators, Congressmen, the Governer, Pelosi, Barack, and McCain. Hopefully someone is going to hear our pleas and develop a solid, successful plan (that doesn't include bankrupting 1/2 the country) to deal with all of this financial terror.
  • The days of the 35 to 40 thousand dollar car is over
For the last 10 years are so I wondered how so many people could afford those big 35 to 50 thousand dollar SUVs and those huge trucks and put gas in them at even $2.50 a gallon. Turns out most probably got home equity loans. I now sit in a neighborhood where 1/3 the homes have been foreclosed. Most of those people had those big trucks and SUV's. Their SUV payment with gas at $4.00 a gallon and insurance probably cost them more a month than their house payment. I guess some people are living in them now.
The automakers will have to bring back cars that cost $15000 are less. 90% of people out their now cannot nor ever could afford much over that. The big SUV party is over.
  • Cerberus bailout
As a former GMAC employee who was laid off, I feel they Cerberus doesn't deserve one dime of taxpayer money. All they have done since aquiring a stake in GMAC is lay off American workers and ship jobs overseas. They deserve NOTHING.
