Oct 15, 2008 -- Zenni Optical causes Clark marital strife?!

Clark's love of Zenni Optical -- the ultra-cheap online retailer of glasses -- recently caused a little marital discord between the penny-pincher and his wife.

When the couple's 9-year-old daughter Stephanie needed glasses, his wife Lane wanted to go to Costco. Clark nearly had a coronary as he looked at the frames Stephi liked -- they were $80! He quickly suggested Zenni, prompting Lane to blow her top and tell him not to be so cheap. (Editor's note: That's the clean version of her diatribe!)

So they reached a compromise: Stephi got the Costco frames, but also got a spare pair from Zenni for $19. It turns out that she likes the Zenni frames better than the Costco ones!

Listeners, however, haven't always embraced Zenni. The company grinds their glasses in communist China, starting at $8/pair with shipping costs of $4.95. Some listeners have been particularly upset that there's been no service after the sale. Zenni is all about the price -- not the customer service.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • they are really lame sorry! all the have is clark!
i have no idea why people like this Zenni optical so much!
the website is so un nice, and there is NO costumer service! its really interesting for me why do people full to the game of such blogger!
anyways, if you agree with me, just try once WWW.EYEBUYDIRECT.COM its waaaay better! same prices, more frames, and you have great costumer service...
  • Great pair of glasses at a great price
LET ME TRY TO GET THE SPELLING CORRECT. I have been wearing my Zenni glasses for two weeks now. Paid $108 for a pair of glasses that compare to a pair I paid over $300 for, plus these have springs on the ear pieces that I really love. I will go back to Zenni for glasses.
  • Zenni Optical
There are probably better companies than Zenni Optical out there. They have over a month lag time on shipping and they are very lax on customer service. I am still not sure if they made my glasses wrong after a month. They are still on the way to China. I ordered from googles4u and seeing how that will work. Zenni Optical is not as good as it sounds and Clark should put up alternative sites.
  • Clark's the genius of all deals and ways of eliminating the middleman. You'd think the wife would of learned and embraced Clark Smart intelligentsia by now. Glad to see the daughter knows a real deal...lol

I wouldn't be surprised if Costco orders from Zenni.
  • ZENNI
....I had great luck with zenni..bought 5 spare pairs at $8...but....if my order did not come to me in 60 days..I would stop or put a hold on my credit card.....I take no chances....
  • Georgia on My Mind
On June 11th, I ordered two pairs of sunglasses. My Discover Card was billed that day, but as of today July 3rd - no glasses received. When I called 2 weeks ago, I was told that the glasses had been shipped directly to me from their plant in Hong Kong. The Zenni rep said that was unusual, so he looked into the production order, and saw that my order was being shipped to my address, Marietta, Republic of Georgia, 30067.

I said that didn't make much sense, and he agreed.

A week later having thought about it, I called Discover and found that they had had no trouble at all billing my card at my Marietta, Georgia, 30067, address.

I called again two days ago saying I still hadn't received my glasses, and now the clerk chewed me out for putting in the Republic of Georgia.

I've just signed on to Zenni and tried to make a dummy order. The forms look just like I remember them, although I will admit that I didn't concentrate on memorizing them at that time.
The form now asks, first for the billing address, Name, addrss, City, and then there's a state box, followed by a country box which is pre-filled in with "United States". After that is a box asking for zip code.

The state box starts out filled with the word "Other". When you click on it, it opens up a drop down box, which starts out with "Other", then has a series of entries which begin "CA" and are followed with, I guess, all the provinces of Canada. Then a sequence begins, whose starting letters are "US" followed by the states in alphabetical sequence.

Now I may not be the brightest bulb on the porch, but I didn't just fall off the turnip truck on the way in to town, either.

I've been living at this address for more than 20 years before the Republic of Georgia became an independent country, and I'm pretty sure I know how to say Georgia, the state, when asked.

Since they didn't have any trouble figuring out how to bill me instantly, I'd say this is unacceptable customer service.

I like cheap as much as Clark Howard does, but I'm pretty sure neither he nor I will buy HD television screens from panel trucks sitting at the side of the road.

I hope Clark will do something about this.

  • Zenni purchase
May 2009: It took 4 weeks to receive my eyeglass purchase. Eyeglass profile: Prescription sunglasses, bifocal. My order was PERFECT and the price was grand! $45. I'm ordering a few more; one for each room!
  • Zenni
I ordered a backup pair of bi-focals from Zenni. Yes it took almost 3 weeks, but it was at one third the price quoted by my local Sam's Club. All the info I needed was on the order form for my first pair and the prescription. I'm very pleased.
  • Pleased with Zinni
Placed order mid May and received 4 out of 5 pairs today, a 3 week wait. I am currently waiting for the 5th pair to show up (obvious that 5 pairs wouldn't fit into their shipping envelope). These were children's glasses for my 10yo son. They emailed me on May 29th that my glasses were in transit and gave me 2 USPS tracking numbers to check the progress. I don't think these frames are quite as high quality as ones we have purchased from the optician. But at this price who cares! I am extremely happy with them and wow, what a bargain they were.
  • Very long wait
I ordered 2 pairs of glasses 21 days ago. I also have experienced what others mentioned, full voicemail. I was able to leave a message a week ago but heard nothing, called today and couldn't leave a message. I really hope they legitamately send the glasses but I am beginning to feel foolish. I will return hear to tell my ending, hope it is positive after all this waiting.
  • A long wait -- getting worried
Zenni Optical promises 2 week delivery. I checked in after a week and after 2 weeks and both times I was given the same info "your glasses will be shipped from our lab to our office, then we will ship them to you and you should receive them in 2 weeks." That got confusing once I hit the 2.5 week mark after my initial order. Hadn't it already been 2 weeks?

I called and was told on the 22nd that my order had NOT YET been shipped from the lab, but would be soon. Like the other commenter, I magically received an e-mail timestamped the 23rd, dated the 22nd that said my glasses had been shipped from the lab on the 21st! That directly contradicted the person on the phone.

I hope the dates are just mixed up, but the contradictions are beginning to thoroughly worry me. That doesn't even begin to cover whether my shipment will ever arrive and the quality of the glasses at that point.

Not sure the stress is worth the discount.
  • Still waiting.............................
I have a VERY low prescription, and just wanted to get a stylish backup pair for a good price in case anything happens to my current pair. So after a friend recommended this website to me, I decided to order, like I said, a very simple pair of glasses. I ordered on April 30th, and it's now May 19th. I decided to call last Thursday just to check on my order, and for the first 20 tries, I received the automated message that directs you to voicemail, which was full of course. That's when I became a little worried about the whole thing. Then I finally got through and was #10 in line to speak with a customer service rep. Finally I spoke with someone who told me that the package would be shipped to me once it was received at Zenni (from China I assume). Then, miraculously, I received an email THAT NIGHT from Zenni that said my order was shipped via USPS. However, the email has a tracking number that seems to be invalid. The rep. also said that I should be receiving the package by Monday or Tuesday, and here I am, still waiting! I'm willing to give it another couple of weeks just to see if they actually deliver, but then I will go to my credit card company and fix this. Luckily, I'm only out $14.90.
  • Two pairs of glasses - pretty happy
I have now bought two pairs of eyeglasses from Zennioptical.com and am now thinking about ordering more. The prescription in the lenses is super! The first pair broke in the temple, but easily repaired them myself with a roll pin and some epoxy glue. I like the styles and prices - I will put up with the three week delivery and reduced customer service for a nice pair of $25 glasses. You must know how to input the Rx or the lenses and pupillary distance - maybe not easy for everyone. For the DIY kind of person - actually kind of fun.
  • Zenni
I am now in my sixth week of waiting for eye glass delivery from Zenni. In the last two weeks, I have talked to three people (two were supervisors) and was told by two that someone would email me my delivery information and tracking information in 24 to 48 hours. No emails were rec'd. The third person (a supervisor) promised to call me last night at 8:00 pm with my infomation. Again, no contact. Today, as with many days, no reps. are available and the mail box is again full. I became interested in Zenni from The Clark Howard Show. I can't believe Clark would recommend a company with all the negitave post. Can someone find out if they are still in business?
  • Great result with Zenni Optical
Kept my fingers crossed after some of the comments here, but given the ridiculous price for the kind of eyeglasses I was seeking, I decided to take a chance with an online purchase. My last pair of eyeglasses cost nearly $450 even at Walmart!! (hi-refractive index [thin] lenses, progressive, photochromic, titanium frame). Looked though many internet sites, Zenni had best price, and I ws prepared to wait 4- 8 weeks, given the comments here. Glasses were ordered late March 09, arrived exactly 4 weeks later, and including 2 pairs of clip-on sunglasses which I added to the order, cost less than $100!! They are dead-accurate in terms of prescription, and the frame materials are much better quality than those of the $450 Walmart pair I bought a few yrs ago. Zenni even caught, and politely informed me of, an error I made in recording the prescription I sent them.

The only thing I would recommend to those with myopia -5.00 or worse, is that you consider their high-index refractive index limit of 1.57 for any progressive lenses they sell. This is thicker than the pair I got at Walmart, though still looks fine for me. My wife is looking at different venders, hopes to purchase progressive lenses with RI 1.61 or 1.67 (For single vision corrections, Zenni does offer higher index lenses of 1.61 and 1.67).

All in all, I am very satisfied with my glasses, had a great experience with Zenni.

PS- Make sure you are meticulous about measuring your currrent frames, pupillary distance, etc. I spent many hours getting it just right (after researching how to do it at various websites), and the results came out great- perfect fit, perfect vision, even with progressive lenses, which are particularly sensitive to errors in frame fit/alignment, pupillary distance measurement, etc.

    Thanks Clark!!
  • ZENNI OPTICAL
CAN NOT BE HAPPIER. PAID $ 52.00 for
progressive eye glasses. I just ordered
two more pairs for family members. The cost for all three pairs is the same for one pair at Costco.
  • Zenni and the cheap glasses advise......
Alhtough it is admirable that Clark Howard gives savings advise it should also be his responsibility to list the potential problems...some serious in nature. This is the case for the glasses he advocated perhaps to use as a second pair and that he has used them himself. Note that the fabrication of a spectacle correction should be a precise procedure taking into account the proper placement of bifocal segment heights (the lines). Improper placement of these segment heights can increase the risk of falling when an individual looking down at steps, curbs or rocky surfaces has the mutifocal line positioned so that the line is now in their direct line of sight. Vertical diplopia (objects viewed are separated into two objects vertically displaced)is a risk especially for the elderly who are already at greater risk for falls. A risk for individuals handling dangerous machinery capable of severing a finger or hand is also a real concern with misplacement of segments. Since this height properly positioned can only be done with the frame on an individual's face accurate positioning is severely limited when the fabricator has no such measurement that can be appropriately determined. A spectacle prescription written by a doctor without the frame available will have NO designated instruction for the segment height. Who will determine this Clark? Someone in China? Consumer beware also that a fabricated spectacle must be inspected for accuracy of the placement of the optical centers. Who will check out the accuracy? Misplaced optical centers may create sufficient undesirable prismatic error which may result in headaces or nausea while wearing the correction. Additionally, in this country we have ophthalmic lens safety guidelines (impact resistance)as well as guidelines for frame materials (flammability and toxicity)....has Clark determined if this overseas fabricator adheres to our country's standards for eyeglass safety? While watching his presentation today he only warned that some consumers had non existent customer services regarding their cheap frames and lenses. I can only hope that these comments will influence the producer and Clark to be responsible and thorough with warnings about what he suggests.
  • Zenni is a rip off
Its been 8 weeks, NO glasses, first they was held up in customs, then when they re-made them (thats their story) they was sendinf them and even gave me tracking number from post office. However, post office says it was just an e-mail saying they was going to send package soon. HOW MANY MORE LIES will they come up with????
  • Where's my Glasses
On 3/30/09, I ordered glasses at Zenni Optical, I'm still waiting for them. I have called abount 10 times, and got the voice mail. Leave a message, no one to help, and when you want to leave a message, the mail box is full. So after 10 emails! I'm still waiting for my glasses or someone to return my call. It wouldn't be so bad, if I had not broke my glasses and had to use a glue gun to keep them together.

They should say "order now get them in three months" or "what do you expect for 12 bucks".
  • Zenni Optical? A better company exists!
EyeBuyDirect.Com offers similar quality products, but with one big difference: When you call, you get a person to talk to. AND an unconditional money back warranty.

Give up on Zenni...I used to be a faithful Zenni customer, but their service blows these days, and for a couple of dollars more ($10-$15) you can eliminate all the BS connected with Zenni. Why take chances? Cheap prices AND customer service with 100% money back guarantees? I'm sold...
  • did not have a problem with zenni
Had no problem with getting my glasses. Takes a little time to get them but they did come and are working out just fine. I would order from them again for back up glasses. took about 4 wks to receive after ordering.
  • Never Received Glasses - Don't order from them
I too ordered simple lens glasses and got the run around as to where my order was after waiting over a month. Today I received another e-mail (after numerous times of trying to contact them) stating that "something was wrong with the shipment and they were reordering". This came after I was told 2 weeks ago that the order was shipped and I was to receive the glasses within 5 days. It appears each time you contacted them, they make up reasons as to why you have not received the order because the reasons never are consistent to what they have previously told you. At this point I am not trusting them and I am trying to get my money back. I thought that since Clark was raving about them that I couldn't get took --- I guess I was wrong.
  • Ordered Zenni eyeglasses
Ordered my glasses 3/6. On 3/30...No glasses. I called and got a recording that there are no reps available to take the call, but leave a message and they will return the call....except that the mailbox is full and you cant leave a message. I emailed them on 3/31 and got no response. I called them today 4/2 and
got the same no rep available recording.
I guess the old saying still holds... if it seems too good to be true, it usually
    is!
  • Giving it a try
I see the negatives about this place. I just ordered a pair just a week ago. I will keep everyone updated on what happens.
  • Zenni Optical is a rip-off! Don't order from them!
I ordered two different styles of prescription glasses from them on December 24th, 2008..it's now March 3rd, 2009 and I still have not received my order. I called them several times towards the end of January and the month of February to check on the status of my order. The customer service rep was slightly rude and condescending. The last time I spoke with a rep, he told me my order had been seized by Customs and Zenni replaced it with a new set to be sent to me Express mail. It's been about 3 weeks and it never arrived. I've called them at the 800 # twice and both times, it went straight to voicemail. No callbacks. This company is a scam, a rip-off and I hope everyone involved there does time in prison for fraud!!!
  • never received order.
Ordered glasses Jan. 11/09. Never received glasses. March 4/09. They say post office received them Feb 2/09. I was never contacted by the post office. They say my complaint should be with the post office. I have yet to receive my glasses.
  • Zenni Optical
I'm really loving all of the indignant comments from others who have had "bad" experiences with Zenni optical. These are eight to fifteen dollar glasses made in China people! For the love of sweet jesus, for what they are, they aren't bad. They're being shipped from halfway across the world! Of course they're going to take a while to reach you. Honestly, these things are LESS THAN TWENTY DOLLARS. They're GREAT for THAT PRICE. Get a grip! If waiting that long for EIGHT DOLLAR GLASSES is so appalling to you, next time go to a real optician.
  • no service after sale
as an optician, i can tell you no service after the sale isn't unlike VSP insurance (they use their own labs).. unless the RX is made wrong or something, they genereally don't have anything to do with a pt's glasses after they get them.

i got a pair last year, to see what they were like, and the rx was right on, etc. but i was getting slight headaches, the base curve of the lens was stronger than i was used to. still a decent pair in a pinch for a backup. it took about 4-5 weeks

i'd be cautious about ordering progressive lenses or bifocals, since there's no place to specify the height.. especially since you cant get the frames measured for you before you order.. beware!
  • Six weeks delivery time
I ordered single-vision sunglasses and like them now that they are finally here. It took six weeks from the middle of January to the end of February to arrive. In an email, they said something about the Chinese New Year causing delays. OK, if that is the truth, then why just not mention that on the Web site? I probably will order another pair or two, but I am not sure.
  • 5 pairs of glasses & shipping for under $100
This year we added another family member that needed eye glasses. After having the same dispute that Clark had with his wife my son's glasses cost $150 because he had to have the Nike check mark on them, though no one will see this as it's located over his ears. My daughter and I got 2 pairs each-reg. and sun glasses, and my son got a pair of sun glasses off zenni. It took 5 weeks to arrive which didn't bother me one bit seeing how much I was saving. We are all ecstatic over out new eye glasses!Awesome quality and well worth the wait. I've been telling everyone I see with eyeglasses! My parents are now planning to get their next glasses there as well, though they were very sceptical while we were waiting on ours to arrive.
  • Slow delivery
I ordered my glasses nearly 3 weeks ago and have not heard from Zenni yet. Their website claims most deliveries occur within 2 weeks. I have tried calling the number from my online Zenni receipt but I also keep getting a recording. Have we all been ripped off?
  • happy with Zinni Optical
I order from Zinni ~ 3 weeks ago and got my order 2 weeks after i placed the glasses.
I got the two pair i requested and they are perfect!
    Thanks for the recommendation Clark!!
  • Zenni Optical
Is Zenni out of business? I ordered a pair of glasses on Dec 28 2008. After a month I tried to contact them on the 1 800 no. and it passes on to mail box and it was full. Tried the next week and the same thing. I called the direct line with area code and it says it is disconnected.
I have called my credit card co. and they have refunded my money.
Still looking on the internet for a good buty on a pair of glasses. Any ideas will be appreciated.

    Ray Swinney
  • I also ordered on Jan 12, 2009 and got the customs excuse as well. Have been trying to call for 3 days now and no luck. I've ordered with them twice before and it was perfect and quick, but this 3rd order is taking almost a month to get here.
  • also waiting shipment
Like others here, I placed an order in early January and have received the same "stuck in customs" explanation of why they haven't arrived 3+ weeks after placing my order. I tried to call today to check up, but got put into voicemail then told voicemail was full and I couldn't leave a message. I suppose a customs issue is possible, but it seems a very tenuous business model if something out of their control could so easily throw a wrench in their business model.
  • Customer No Service
I recently bought two pair of glasses from Zenni. Called to see what's up with the shippment. I got the same response as is listed here. Very frustrating and very concerning. Meanwhile my son is getting headaches and blurred vision from his out of date glasses. If this is all circumstantial then this is an incredibly bad run of luck. I am not happy.
  • Response from Zenni on Order Issues
this is the response that I recieved after emailing, faxing and calling numerous times today. I placed my order 12/23/08.

    Re: Order 462027

    Dear Mr. ######:

In fact, your glasses were produced and shipped from our overseas lab on the 30th of December. Since the Terrorism Act, shipments coming into and going out of the US may be held for random inspection by the government, at any time. The shipment in which your order is contained has been held for further inspection, and we expect release imminently.

Other than that, your frustrated attempts at contact are circumstantial. We are extremely busy with year end orders, holidays and flex spending accounts. We handle over 1000 calls a day at our service center, and if there are more than ten calls in the queue, at any time, the rollover puts you into voice mail, frequently full, but cleared daily. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The telephone number on the order confirmation copy is one we used prior to switching to T-1 lines, and reprogramming the website, to change the number, is not nearly as simple as one would think, unfortunately. It's a major programming task, not simply a matter of exchanging one set of ten numbers, for another.

We appreciate your patience, and hope that the glasses will ship shortly. When they leave our office, you will receive a tracking number by e.mail, and expect the glasses in 4-6 days subsequent to that time.

    Thank you for your patience.

  • Waiting on Order
I too ordered Zenni glasses and have been waiting more than two weeks. I got the same response from an email - "they are held up in customs". Bas advice and will not order again.
  • glasses
i have ordered 5 pair of glasses from zenni. Happy customer for 6 yrs. no problems and good customer service.Best prices
  • Zenni - What's Up?
I ordered a pair of glasses 6 weeks ago and haven't recieved them yet. They are progressive lenses so I expected them to take longer but not this long. I called twice, the first time the recording said a shipment of glasses were held up in customs but mailed released the day before, the second recording a week later said a shipment of glasses were held up in customs and would be mailed the next day, and day after. Should have recieved by now but no word. I feel pretty uneasy now. My credit card was billed by Zenni also
  • Zenni Optical
My wife and I have used Zenni with great satisfaction until:

The last order was put in 2 months ago and has been charged to my account and not received. No one is answering the phones and their mailbox is full.....what's up doc?
  • Great glasses for little money
Clark, I listened to you and after paying $300 for mine and my husbands glasses from Visionworks where the lens kept falling out constantly and they wanted you to buy the guarantee every time you brought them back, I decided to try zenni. Wow, the glasses came today, 2 weeks after I ordered. They are great. Nice hingeless flexible frames and the lens are perfect. The cost was $58. I got bifocals, anti-glare, atiscratch coatings and 10% tinted. They look great. My husband is going to order his tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.
  • Bought $400 glasses for $39.95!!
I Love Zenni! Measure right. Put in the numbers right. If you do it right, no operator error on your part and you get a great pair of glasses for UNbelievable savings. Mine came in a few days. I have hingeless, rimless gold superlight frames and nice light featherweight lenses, UV, anti-glare, antiscratch coatings. They even came with a matching clip on set of sunglasses. All this for $39.95. My family and friends could not tell which pair was the original $400 Lens Crafters pair and which was the new cheap Zenni pair. I am SOLD on Zenni and am not going back.
  • ZENNI IS GREAT !!!
I learned about Zenni from Clark and decided to try them after I had to spend upward of $350 dollars for glasses when I had an emergency and could not find my back ups. I spent around $15 bucks for a pair of sunglasses which I love.
My adult son has ordered several pairs and my wife has ordered two pairs of bi-focal glasses and sun glasses... all with great quaility...and tremendous prices.

    Give it a try...
  • Zenni? EyeBuyDirect!
I find this story somewhat puzzling, I first discovered Zenni on Clark's show, later updated to eyebuydirect.com as Zenni noted they are cheaper by a dime. That they are. Better selection too, nice websites, 100% refund policy, and virtual Imaging. As a matter of fact, the reason I am here today was to say thanks Clark, I just bought two AMAZING frames for $14.95!!
  • how about contacts
I'm getting ready to order from Zenni for glasses, how about a contact site?
  • Zenni
Slave Labor concerns aside, I can't believe, Clark would endorse a place that 40-50% of his listeners are complaining about.

Even the COMCAST has a higher aproval rating than these guys!!
  • Zenni Optical
The prescription on my Zenni glasses was entirely wrong (I had them checked by my opthamologist). I returned them and had to wait a month for replacements. These are also wrong. Plus the bi-focals don't match and there is no anti-glare coating, which I had ordered. Now I can not get Zenni to respond to my e-mails about getting a refund.
  • Zenni
I love Zenni optical and have purchased several pairs of glasses over the last several years; I would never return to the old expensive way. Their frames are every bit as fashionable and well made as anything you'd pay for at your local eyeglass places. I've compared them, and yes, my optometrist was very impressed with the quality of what I've purchased at Zenni. I'm hard on my glasses (I do a lot of yard work. Sorry to see so many negative experiences, I can only say give them a try and don't expect a miracle. They're great if you want to try a pair of sunglasses first and go from there (I left off the bifocal part as I knew I didn't need those measurements for the sunglasses, and it worked fine). My everyday frames are very feminine. I'm just thrilled with the whole package.
  • I needed new glasses due to a medical problem. My insurance would not cover them so I went to Zenni. I LOVE my new glasses! They are everything I always wanted that my insurance would not cover. (no line bifocal, anti reflective coating) They look great and I can see great too. I will be buying again.
  • Zenniscrewu
ZENNI folks are CROOKS, Clark how can I get even with them? I can't believe Clark is still using much less backing this jepjoint. I ordered glasses, they arrived and with the microscopic prescription I actually had to physically rotate my head left to use. I returned glasses for credit, they kept the returned glasses and NEVER issued a credit, what a bunch of crooks!!!! Everyone please STOP using this firm!
  • service
my glasses arrived and were great until the prescription lense became unglued from the sunglass. I returned them, paid return fee myself and they were fixed quickly and returned w/o any charge...service great for me.
  • Zenni Optical
Zenni messed up my order. They said they could not do my prescription in a high index light weight lens. The funny thing is I was already wearing high index light weight lenses that the same prescription, so I know they were wrong. I had to cancel my order and buy them from goggles4u.com. goggles4u.com is better and less expensive.
  • zenni
Use $ with zenni that you can afford to lose. I think that zenni aims at satisfying ~50% of its patients and will get half the $ from those who make returns. They can't lose. I wouldn't recommend them, but if you have $ to gamble with...have at it.
  • zenni
I bought a pair of glasses with progressive lenses from Zenni and they were terrible. the presciprtion was way off and they started falling apart after two weeks. ended up tossing them and going to costco
  • Sometimes cheap doesn't pay
I spent $400 on a pair of glasses six months ago. While I understand that some families are probably in great financial stress right now, there are some places where you shouldn't cut corners. I know that I'll have these glasses I just bought for 5-10 years, and 10 years is how long the last pair held up, at approx. the same purchase price.
  • do they take American Express?
I just placed my order with Zenni after much frustration. It kept getting refused, and I'm in very good standing with American Express, so there is no reason for the system to have rejected that form of payment. After four failed attempts, I didn't want to lose the whole shopping basket (again) so I paid w/ Visa and it went straight through. Has anyone paid with AmEx successfully, or also been rejected when trying that method?

My priority in health care that could mean the difference between life and death, like vision at 70 mph, for instance, is to get the best I can. That goes for physicians too. It's great to squeeze every buck for all it's worth. I know I try to do just that, and it's very satisfying. But, all the money in the world won't help me if I'm six feet under because I got any kind of cheap health care from a doctor or an eye doctor that was worth exactly their really cheap cost. It's great to be rich, but only if one understands what the most valuable thing is to do with that money. I'm getting by, but I'm definitely not flush. My main priority, though is seeing to it that my health is as good as It can be. Quality life and time is all we really have when you get right down to it, and I just don't believe that comes at a discount; cars, yes, life, no.

My husband got his new glasses from Zenni and loves them! Says they are much better than the $300 plus pair he had last!! I plan on buying mine there now....hopefully will be as happy...oh yes, his are no line progressive lenses.
  • I agree with Clark Part II
Correction: the $49 all-inclusive kids' glasses came from JCPenny
And the five pair for her, three for me, lasted a year (not each pair).
And she is 12 now, and like Clark's daughter, sat down at the computer and chose the lenses she likes.
    Two important things:
    1) you'll need to send the pupilary (??) measurement - the distance b/n the two pupils, which is not usually in the script - best if the optician measures it and you write it on your scrip. And since a kids' tends to be more narrow, the system wont' let you order some of the glasses b/c the frames are two big for the measurement.
    2) Measure existing frames that fit - you'll want to stay w/in a couple of mm of the width & height of each lens & total width of lenses
  • I agree with Clark
when my 11-year-old needed glasses and I saw the prices - even at Costco - I went to Zenni. I ordered seven pair for the two of us - and it came to $105 inc. shipping. The scripts are fine for single-vision lenses, we've had no problems. They are not the sturdiest - most have broken, been lost or bent - but that's also b/c both of us are careless w/ glasses - equally careless with the $100 pairs from Costco. Still, they lasted a year. Now she has a stronger script, and I'm ordering from Zenni again - we went retail and chose frames, and I ordered her one pair at Sears - $49 for kids' lenses, but the selection at Zenni is just as good.
We're about to order five more pair for her - so she'll always have a few around. So, Clark, Don't have a heart attack at the waste - kids lose glasses, and tweens love to change styles, and for $8-$20/pair, she can!
I tell everyone to buy from Zenni.
  • Zenni
I love Zenni, I have bought 6 pair of glasses from them. Only one pair turned out less than I expected and if I had read deminsions on the frames that would not have happened.
  • Zenni Glasses
I took a chance and ordered glasses for me. I absolutely love them. I get compliments all the time on my glasses and have told many people obout Zenni. I now have also ordered my husband's glasses and he loves them too. I will order again from them anytime. I saved $150.00 plus by ordering thru Zenni.
  • Zenni was great for me
I have a slightly strange astigmatism in one eye. It turns out that the prescription that is most comfortable for me to use is not the one the doctor will give me when he measures my eyes. Because Zenni is so inexpensive, I was able to buy multiple pairs of glasses with slight variations to the prescription and use them until I found the best and most comfortable correction. At a regular optometrist, this would have been too expensive. Zenni is awesome!
  • why they are so cheap
The glasses are cheap because they are made with essentially slave labor. When China is free, I'll consider buying products from there. But when they have to pay a living wage, the glasses won't be so cheap will they?
  • Zenni Optical
After purchasing my two primary glasses at Costco (both titanium, one bifocal), I had extra "use it or lose it" medical savings money so I decided to try Zenni. I ordered 8 pair of glasses - back up bifocal, backup single vision, and sunglasses all with titanium frames; two safety glasses, one with bifocal; one wind goggles; and two ultra cheap pairs for a Halloween costume. Total cost (all with non-reflective coating) less than $300. They arrived exactly in 2 weeks as estimated and all appeared to be well made and accurate prescriptions. While I cannot comment on durability yet, the only problem I had was that I still have some of the "use it or lose it" money left. At the very least, these are great for back-up glasses and yard or shop work with the safety glasses.
  • ZENNI
...I have 13 spare pairs, at $8 each..they are great......my optomitrist was shocked at the high quality in the $8 spare pairs...she had never seen anything like this...she recommends ZENNI...this is at the VETERANS ADMINISTRATION.....but most people at ZENNI pay $70...that is their average purchase..all I wanted was spare pairs, over a 2 year period....I do not like the 700% markup eye docs rape their victims..er, customers....
  • outstanding service
I had outstanding service from Zenni - I was about to deploy to Iraq and had just received my glasses. I cracked the lens during training; I contacted Zenni to ask if I might purchase a replacement lens (the lenses connect with 2 small screws, which I could do myself). Instead, the owner said he would immediately ship me a complete pair, asking only my word that I would ship the original pair back to them. I received the replacements in time to deploy (june 2006); I wore them throughout my deployment and am still wearing the same pair. For less than $90 for bendable titanium, rimless, no-glare/no-line bifocals, I'm not looking elsewhere for future glasses.
  • Zenni
I loved this story, it was hilarious and reminded me of my own situation with my wife and kids...usually over clothes however! My Daughter loves her Zenni's, actually like the process better because she got to (same as Stephi) sit down at my computer and choose her perfect frames. I had to adjust a bit to find ones where the measurements fit her face, but she loves them and all for 14.95!
Thanks for turning us on to Zenni, Clark!
  • Zenni glasses
I've bought two pair and yeah, they were cheap...but they both broke within months, and, since one is titanium (I know, my fault) it would cost $100 to fix. The other broke in such a way that the screw into the glass couldn't be removed properly. Both were frameless or half-framless fashionable type glasses. (Also, the prescription on one never felt quite right.) If you buy from them, make sure the frames are simple and fixable!
  • Zenni
I got a pair and love them. They are great - AND they're transitional bi-focal. Thank you Clark, for the info on this company.
  • Zenni... so true!
"Zenni is all about the price -- not the customer service." Sooo true. I bought my daughter (30 yrs old, not a kid!) a pair of glasses from Zenni to supplement her contacts. Short story..the frame around the lenses cracked under the part that holds the lens in. That happened with TWO frames.
Not from abuse. They sent the second frame free as a replacement. After they broke, I contacted their customer non-service department. They referred me to their website, the next frame was available to be ordered at half off. I tried to explain to them that there must have been a manufacturing defect since both frames split in exactly the same place. They got belligerent and rude...even the supervisor, when I asked to speak to her. So FYI, yes the glasses are cheap and a great deal, but they are short on customer service. I guess it is even a good deal if you have to purchase a second pair to replace the broken ones. And one other thing they stress..be sure that if you have a problem, contact them WITHIN the 30 day window of the guarantee.
