Oct 07, 2008 -- Bank of America earns kudos over Countrywide settlement

If you're a regular listener, you know that Clark is no fan of Bank of America. But right now he's got to give them credit. As the owners of Countrywide, BoA has reached a settlement in 11 states where they'll offer workouts to 400,000 homeowners who were victims of predatory lending.

Mortgagees were put into loans they couldn't afford by Countrywide. Of course, you could argue, "Well, they were adults and signed on the dotted line. Why should they get a workout?" But who among really understands all the mortgage mumbo-jumbo you sign when you buy a home?

This collective workout will cost BoA between $8-9 billion. It will allow mortgagees to re-calculate their monthly payment to one-third their income. The 11 states affected include Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Washington.

Meanwhile, there's another ongoing action where Countrywide allegedly cheated people by putting false fees on loans to create additional profits. That still has to go through the courts, so there's no telling when it will be resolved.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

I would suggest checking out the Home Save program by NACA.com. They will get the negotiations done for you. Go to the nearest Home Save workshop and Naca will negotiate the terms for you. Good luck
  • Bank of America ROCKS
Thanks for recognizing the real "Americanism" of Bank of America-- anybody noticed how they're NOT in trouble like so many banks at present?
I have been a faithful BOA customer since they "took over" NationsBank years ago. I've stayed with them through three mortgages (or should I say "THEY stayed with ME?"), credit cards and online banking, all without difficulty. Well that is until they "forgot" to pay my R.E. taxes last month, but we're working on that!!!
  • BOA
I am happy you said something positive about BOA. I think some people forget that companies are in business to make money. It is up to the individual to stay ahead of the game. Do not let these companies put you in something you can not afford. They make profit off consumers.
  • Countrywide Home Loans Lawsuit
I have an adjustable rate mortgage with Countrywide and I have tried to get help from them but refused me over and over again because I have more debt than income. What else can I do? I am now behind two months with no way of catching up those two payments. I was told that I should still send a letter with my situation. What should I say? Who should I sent it to, Bank of America or Countrywide. I need some guidance. Thanks
