Sep 29, 2008 -- Giant monster-mega banks to dominate new America

It's a new era in banking with 3 giant monster-mega banks -- Citibank, Bank of America and Chase -- rising to dominate the financial landscape. Historically, we've had many banking choices in the United States to avoid concentration of financial power. Canada was really the first developed nation to go the giant monster mega-bank route. As part of the backlash, our neighbors in the Great White North also embraced credit unions like no other nation!

When all the financial mess settles down, Citibank, Bank of America and Chase will together account for about 1 in every 3 deposit dollars in the United States. The relative lack of competition means the banks have no incentive to offer good customer service. But you don't have to do business with them -- even though convenience is king for many people.

Clark thinks we need intense supervision of these 3 outfits so they can't get into any lending foolishness that could undermine our nation.

Meanwhile, Europe is facing 3 bailouts of its own during the last 36 hours. The most prominent has been the Benelux-funded rescue of banking and insurance company Fortis. There were also similar bailouts in Britain and Germany. So is the world on the verge of financial collapse? No, but we've got a lot of homework to do here and overseas.

What others are saying

  • BANKS
THE NEW AMERICAN PREAMBLE. SREW THE PEOPLE..OF THE BANKS, BY THE BANKS,FOR THE BANKS
  • Credit Unions
I have basically the same question as Dan400Man : Are the Credit Unions being affected by the current economic situation ? I have not heard anything about the Credit Unions and am considering puting my IRA into a IRA CD at a Credit Union.
  • What Banks?
I'll stick with my local bank thanks. I hate the monster three, and hopefully that will be dealt with eventually. But, mine is local, solid and good CS. I had a credit union once. Dumped it like a hot potato since they kept making errors in their favor. I got tired of the fight with airheads.
  • More consolidation raises risk
So what happens if (when?) one of these three banks fails? And then the next? What is Congress doing to ensure that one of these doesn't go under? Do we wait until there's only one left to put in place required safeguards?

I have been a member of a credit union for a number of years now. Clark, how do banks offer more convenience than credit unions? I'm not seeing it. I have free online banking, free online bill payment, free access to thousands of ATMs across the country, interest on loans that always beat the banks. What convenience am I missing? If anything, my credit union offers me more convenience at less cost than any bank I had previously been a customer of.

Does anyone know (yet) whether any problems the Big Three Banks may encounter could negatively affect credit unions? Just by sheer size and momentum?

Clark, you are spot on with your suggestion of "intense supervision" of the Big Three. In any case, the Big Three shouldn't be able to purchase so much as a box of Kleenix without some oversight.
  • Banks
I am not sure about you, but IF I want good customer service, the last place I even think about going is a bank or any government facility. That leaves us to find credit unions, which are great from my experience with them!
