Sep 11, 2008 -- Remembering 9/11, state guard service

Seven years ago today, our nation took a major body-blow during the unfathomable terror attacks in New York and Washington D.C. So many innocents were blown away by fireballs of brutality from the evil geniuses of al-Qaeda.

Seven years on, we as Americans have fatigued from the War on Terror. But the reality is that dealing with terrorists is messy and we have a long road ahead of us.

Clark recalls how the British handled the IRA. The IRA would put bombs in metal trashcans to turn them into shrapnel. So the Brits put in plastic trash cans. They also put in cameras everywhere with artificial intelligence to recognize terrorists. The point is they adjusted and they ultimately defeated the IRA. Thus goes our struggle with al-Qaeda.

There are so many ways people have been moved to contribute in the aftermath of 9/11. Clark joined his state guard in November 2001. He didn't have any martial skills at all, so they put him in public affairs. But he's also had opportunities to serve that he never anticipated -- such as when he did medevac relief during Hurricane Katrina.

What others are saying

  • Grandpa Gene
I agree with War Vet. I've been in combat and "firefights." I would never put someone down for any service given to their country and community. Clark is doing a noble thing and we can all learn from him. To Grandpa Gene: turn off the Clint Eastwood movies, you're not fooling anyone.
  • Grandpa Gene
You, Sir, sound like a poseur to me. You don't articulate like a TRUE war veteran. Are you sure that you haven't simply watched too many movies?
  • Appreciate comments
As an British expat I appreciate your comments on the IRA. The IRA was widely not referred to as a terrorist organization by the US, and, as we know was actually funded by some sympathises over here. I lived in Britain through the terror of the IRA and it was not until they were publicly condemned as a terrorist organisation, post 9/11, by the US that the road to their final defeat came about.
  • to grandpa gene
    Clark was only 16
  • Tinker Toy Troop's
While it is commendable that you feel a need to serve and those who stand and wait also serve too. But I just have a question for all of you WANT-A-BE's, Where were you in "72"??? Been there, done that, in RVN, hump the bush, then was a member of a gunship flight crew on a fling wing deathtrap. Where were you? And you think you might be able to protect me and my family without a rifle! No Thanks Clark, I'm not a plastic trooper and if you and the rest of the wussy's could take it, You might be the real thing instead of a WANT-A-BE. After all, when you live through a fire fight or two its like the old Sarge said "You'll live and learn or you won't live long". Get real, sign up and pull your tour of duty in hell, and be a man among men, or remain a second class wussy.
  • War on Terror Fatigue
Sorry Clark, but you're wrong on this one. Americans aren't fatigued by this "war on Terror" - they're angry at being deceived that somehow Iraq was connected to terrorism, and they're confused about what exactly we've been doing to counter terrorism for the last seven years. We've been scared with mindless "color alert codes", bullied at airports and repeatedly lied to. Is this really the way to wage a true "War on Terror?"
  • Refinancing
Would it be correct to say then that individuals with decent credit and new homes (less than 2 years old) with interest rates in the 6 percent range and whose homes have seriously depreciated during this mortgage crisis are just out of luck when it comes to refinancing for a lower rate. What has to happen in order for them to refinance? For example: Jumbo Loan 80/20. The 80 is at 6.87/30 yr. fixed percent and the 20 is at 12.85 percent/ 15 yr. balloon, and the home has depreciated 71,000 below purchase price in the last 8 months. What has to happen in order to refinance these 2 loans and combine them into 1 loan? The loans of course are with you guessed it - Countrywide.
