Sep 02, 2008 -- Cell phone companies rip you off with 3rd party billing

RIP-OFF ALERT: Cell phone companies have been engaging in a practice that's been ripping you off! It's happening most often to those who have an add-a-phone service (where you add a friend or family member to your plan.) The industry is making huge money doing 3rd-party billing for "services" that other companies claim they've provided you -- services such as ring tones, joke-of-the-day texts, etc. The cell phone company gets such a large commission for doing this kind of billing, that they've been purposely deceptive about the practice. The Cyberfraud Task Force of the State of Florida went after AT&T for billing their customers for services that they'd advertised as being free. The settlement was over $10 million, for Floridians alone.

Clark knows that cell phone bills are impossible to understand. Clark's last cell phone bill was 56 pages long! But Clark goes through it page-by-page each month. About once every four months he'll find something that's not legit. (Most recently, he found a $2.95 charge for a ring tone that the provider's website claimed was free - but they lied.)

The cell phone companies have no incentive to clean up their act, since it's such a cash cow for them. And according to Smart Money magazine, they go out of their way to make these charges hard to find on your bill. Therefore, Clark says he needs YOU to be the cop for your own phone bill. Look for deceptive terms such as "Premium Content", or "Direct Bill Charge" (sometimes referred to as "DBC" on your bill.)

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Facebook connected?
I just got a bill that had "Too Lazy Text LLC" that started when I opened a facebook account and I put in my cell number. I took that number off. Not sure why I put it on there to begin with. But the charges started then. I've found so many hackers in Facebook wondering if they are doing this?
  • accessvoice
The same happen to me but it was my land line. Never sign up for the "accessvoice" but was charge 19.95 a month .
  • how do I get these charges off?
I just got crammed with $36.46 of fake charges on my home phone bill. Embarq/CenturyLink claims they can't remove the charges and I have to call the third party companies. Does that work? Also Embarq refuses to (claims they can't) block the service. What should I do?Thanks for advice!
  • Verizon - 47941 Too Lazy ($9.99 since Jan 2009)
I have been charged for Too Lazy to call to send me unwanted spam since 2009 on my verizon wireless cell phone. I feel a bit dumb that I never noticed until now. Ugh. Need to get more Clark Smart.

I had to block this service (never asked for it ** i.e., *I* have to block it in order not to get charged - what kind of business model is that??).

I love the web - I found info on this here:

    http://www.breakingwindows.com/2008/09/block_premium_text_messaging_4.php
  • Cylon, LLC - Facebook
I recently had a charge from these internet parasites on my Sprint bill. After doing a bit of research, I removed my cell number from my info in Facebook as there is NO other way this could have happened. From what I've been reading all over the internet, it appears many of the quizzes you can take on Facebook that might ask you for your cell number for the results (which I NEVER give that info) is where these fraudulent charges originate from. Considering this information was likely taken from my Facebook account, I'll be contacing my state Attorney General today and filing a fraud complaint against these scammers and contacting my cell carrier AND Facebook. So in light of all this and after reading the comments below I do have to add, yes James Derrik, this IS a fraud scam and NO you don't have to sign up for anything or even provide this information to these people to initiate charges to begin with. They take it. I wouldn't be surprised at this point if they install spyware on our computers to obtain this information as well.
  • 3rd party billing
Your local phone company can put a block on all 3rd party billing at your request. I did, and there was no charge with AT&T.
  • Go Live Mobile charges on Verizon bill
I too have been the victim, twice, of this type of fraud. I was billed by Gol Live Mobile on my Verizon account two separate months for a charge labeled 'Premium Text Messaging. I have no knowledge of ever utilizing this service. The company is supposed to have refunded me within 6-8 weeks from the date of July 12, but I have never received this refuld.
  • 3rd party scam
I am getting billed by Verizon for AccessVoice, I do not want AccessVoice, Verizon was fine they gave me numbers to call but AccessVoice does not answer their phone at 19.95 a month I am quite angry! When I do get ahold of AccessVoice they will get an ear full and no I did not sign up for thier program. No lies, if this company is reputable they would answer the phone!
  • CYLON LCC NOT A SCAM!!!
YOU NEED TO STOP WITH THE LIES!!! THIS COMPANY IS VERY REPUTABLE. IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY STUPID PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO SIGN UP FOR SERVICES USING THEIR CELL PHONE NUMBERS, AND DON'T READ THE FINE PRINT! IF YOU SIGNED UP FOR THEIR SERVICES WITHOUT READING THE FINE PRINT, YOU GET ALL OF THE MISERY YOU DESERVE!!! STUPID IDIOTS!!!
  • Cell phone companies.
I have T Mobile and I pay my bill each month through our checking accounts bill pay. I was looking for ways to save money so i was going into each bill. Ya, I discoverd 3rd party billing, and was mad. When I called TMobile they said there was nothing they could do. So I call the other company, and was told oh you signed for it so I ask her what I down loaded since I started paying for it 14 monthes ago. She said nothing, I said I want my money back. I was told oh I can only give you a 3 month refund. So I got the check today and its not even my correct name so I can't even cash the check. Does anyone know of any class actions going on about this?
  • OAN ripoff
    OAN
Neither my wife, nor I, asked for or know what it is, but OAN has charged me, on my ATT bill, for $24.95 for two months. Last month, I called their number, and they agreed on the phone to cancel the service, whatever it is, but they lied. Why does our government allow these companies to continue unethical practices?
  • OAN
I NOR MY WIFE EVERY SIGNED UP OR ASKED FOR OR REPLIED TO ANY MESSAGE FROM THEM BUT THEY CONTINUE TO BILL ME THROUGH ATT EVEN THOUGH I CALLED AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD CANCELL..09/07/09
  • Cylon charges disgusting!!
I noticed that I had charges on my bill for Cylon and had no idea how they got there. AT&T should be sued for charging people for stuff they didn't approve...
  • att and third party billing
In January 2009 I received bills from OAN and Allvoicemail through Verizon for service I don't even understand, especially as one line is my fax line. I got it straightened out and now I have charges from Cylon LLC on my AT&T bill for Purchases and Downloads. I have a phone that calls, receives calls, takes messages and that's all. I have no Facebook or anything else like that. I did drop a line on the family plan, same as in January. Is it true that AT&T has to charge its customers for anything on their phone numbers? The first two companies were in Florida; maybe they found business better from Arizona.
  • Cylon LLC Unsolicited Charge on Cell
On Jan 12th, my wife received several unsoliciated text messages. We do not use text, so she deleted them. I found a $9.99 charge from Cylon LLC on the July bill and called AT&T. They told me it was also on my Aug bill and they removed both. Also put a block on our two cell phones for these type charges. Called Cylon and they removed my wifes number from their billing. I asked for an explanation on how and why this happened and was told they had no comment. I filed a complaint with the Arizona Attorney Generals office.(Cylon is in Scottsdale, AZ).
This is an unscrouplous company that is ripping off thoughts of cell phone users with only a small number challenging them. go to www.cyloncorp.com and complain. File a complaint with the Attorney General in Arizona to have them investigated.
  • Cylon scam
I received a charge for 9.99 from cylon on my sprint bill.I realize that the phone companies saynthey are not reponsible for these. However somehow they got my nnumber. Sprint says they show a text out on my phone to them. one problem I don't know how to text. Spint had to walk me through how to text them to stop the service. I also have not done anything on facebook that reqiured my phone number.
  • 3rd Party Billers
I took quizzes on Facebook and had them sent to my cell. I then sent a message to the 3rd party biller telling them to STOP. One out of three did. When I called Verizon, they gave me the 5 digit codes for who was billing me. I sent another message to STOP the service for which I received replies telling me they had. Gee, guess what? I received a bill from them again this month. Ugh! When I call Verizon, they had a different code that I had never seen, but the lady claimed it was on last month's bill. That number was never given to me last month. THEN, they conveniently can not find the 800 number for the companies so I can call them directly. If we tried doing something like this, we would be in jail for fraud. HELP me figure this one out.
  • Cylon LLC
I'm unable to stop the text messaging from Cylon LLC in the amount of 9.99 a month. When I reply stop, they blantenly ignore my request and I don't even use this service. Any suggestions on how I can get out of this vicious circle. Sprint is my carrier.
  • cancel it
    @cathy
I called t-mobile, and they were very helpful. (My wife signed up for one or two of these by filling out deceptive surveys/quizzes on facebook).
They asked those companies for reimbursement on my behalf, and provided clear instructions for me to cancel the ongoing payments.
That being said, it's still a horribly deceptive practice
  • SERIOUSLY!?!??!!?
Does nobody realize that it isn't the service provider's fault? Here is how this scenario works.

Cylon LLC (or Jamster, DADA Mobile, Thumbplay, Predictomobile, Mobile messenger, etc.) provides a service people that sign up for. This service is inclusive - meaning you must contact them first to start the service (which could be text alerts, ringtones, games, etc). It can be started with something as simple as an online survey that you submit your phone number to (in order to get the survey results). It can also be started by texting a certain shortcode (like 38146 for Cylon LLC).

Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. are NOT responsible for you signing up for this service. By entering your phone number, or sending that text you are agreeing to these 3rd party vendors' terms and conditions. They provide you with some sort of service and they tell your service provider (Sprint, VZW, etc) that you have subscribed to their service - and they bill your service provider.

Then, your service provider, in turn, must bill you because they are being charged by this 3rd party vendor for services their subscribers have signed up for. THAT'S WHY THEY AREN'T ABLE TO CREDIT THESE CHARGES - AND IF THEY DO IT IS FOR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND GOODWILL!

I understand these phone companies can come off as dishonest - and maybe they are, but this particular 3rd party debate is not their fault.
  • AT&T Ripoff
AT&T rep told me all she does is answer calls about third party billing. This is stealing--plain and simple--and the government should fine AT&T for driving the get-a-way vehicle. AT&T is profiting from an illegal activity. Don't use them. Call your legislators get laws passed that will put the bastards put behind bars for stealing.
  • T-Mobile is a crooked phone company
T-Mobile is a crooked phone company working with other scam-ers to scam its customers. I had an incoming text from MobileMessenger, 84287 MMText(800)416-6129 each month. T-Mobile charged me $9.99. I tried to call T-Mobile to resolve this problem. I could not reached anyone in T-Mobile to help me because they kept routed my call from one department to another department and then got loss. After many tries, I finally talked to a real person. T-Mobile stated that they cannot do anything about the bogus $9.99 charged. They can help me by blocked the MobileMessenger text message. Guess what, more than a month later, I received a new billing statement shown that MobileMessenger spammed me a text again and charged another $9.99. This is madness!!! T-Mobile stinks. Thank God, my T-Mobile contract will expire soon. I will switch to other provider. It is hard to fine a good cell phone provider. I welcome any suggestions.
  • Dumbie
Clark Howard is ridiculous! He makes a big deal out of nothing and really has no clue what the heck is going on with your bill either! Premium Content is something YOU or YOUR child purchased through the handset! LOCK YOUR KIDS PURCHASING ABILITY IF YOU DO NOT WANT THEM BUYING STUFF! IT ISN'T AT&T's FAULT! It is yours! Take responsibility for your own problems!
  • fraudulent charges on my Virgin Mobile phone
I have been charged for text messaging coming in to me. I keep deleting and they keep coming. I don't know how this happens, but it is eating up my minutes and my $$$$$. I pay to top up, and I have never texted anyone.
  • Alltel Alows Third Party Charges
    Alltel Allows Third Party Charges
I have been fighting with Alltel trying to get them to remove from my bill services that I did not ask to have. I am being charge for (44577 Gator Arcade Trivia 9.99) and (47941 To Lazy 9.99) and once again (44577 Gator Arcade Trivia 9.99) totaling 29.97 on my April bill. The fact that I have the same game on the bill twice should bring to their attention that something not right.
I called Alltel services department, the Rep said that it on the bill there for I must have ordered it and they will not refund me. The Rep said I have to take up the charges with the company that charging me. I said will that you, it on your bill.
I ask Alltel for the phone number of the company’s who are charging me and the Alltel Rep. could not come up with the numbers. I was able to find (Gator Arcade and To Lazy) on the internet. Gator Arcade had a phone number to reach them and To Lazy you had to email them. I Called Gator Arcade and gave them the information about the game and bill and they inform me that I do not have account with them, and Alltel will to have correct this problem. I email To Lazy only to get quick computer reply to text them to stop. I do not have text messaging.
Alltel should be held reasonable allow third party to be on their bill and to have anything place on the bill without asking the customer is wrong.
  • ESBI Scam
I'm one of the few left who has & likes a land line. I pay AT&T about $12- $15/month for 30 local calls, no extra unneeded features & use call card for LD. The last few months, there's been an extra $15.85 unauthorized fee from E(nhanced)S(ervices)B(illing)I(nc) which they say I ordered by clicking one too many times or some such thing. The cubicle folks are unprofessional & make it up as they go along. I refused to pay it both times & reported them & AT&T to the fcc. They claim it's fixed,so we'll see. AT&T credited this time, but will probably keep trying to sneak it back on, hoping you'll forget & just pay.(I won't). Caveat emptor of ESBI. We my need to sic my Dateline hero, Chris Hanson on this one. Thanks also to Clark for his caring advice to his listeners.
  • Cylon LLC Hoax
I have received a $9.99 charge on my sprint bill from Cylon LLC. Alerts-Info 41463. So I text the number STOP and they text me back a phoney website and said other charges may apply. We need to stop these money hungry liars!
  • Sprint Dishonesty
Have been billed for a preium service we never signed up for. Sprint refuses to credit, or stop the billing. My only choice is to change service providers. When ever I see a Sprint employee in passing I go out of my way to remind them they, that person, is a dishonest person because of who they represent. If everyone who has a problem with Sprint did this management might get the message.
  • Cylon LLC
"CYLON LLC ATT third party billing:::Jan.bill had $9.99 charge. ATT. does not know(allegedly) what service he gets for this charge. Appears to be a SCAM...Stopped Cylon service but still have $9.99 on January's bill. Will dispute.."

Hi, we have problems with Cylon LLC in Germany as well. Some of our members has filed a complained with the BBB in Arizona.

We would suggest that you do the same!
    Kind regards

  • Sprint cramming
Had charges of $20 on each bill, Nov 08, Dec 08, Jan 09, and Feb 09. Each time Sprint credits account after phone call to "no service". BUT it keeps happening. After complaint to BBB, FCC and FTC, I received a letter from Sprint stating THIS WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. The very next month, yep $20 charge for gaming scam.
  • cell phone rip off - 3rd party charges
take some action - send your complaints to

  • CYLON LLC ATT third party billing
Got my grandson a cell phone for Christmas. Jan.bill had $9.99 charge. ATT. does not know(allegedly) what service he gets for this charge. Appears to be a SCAM...Stopped Cylon service but still have $9.99 on January's bill. Will dispute..
  • Unauthorized Charges MBLOX on at&t
I recently noticed that my cell phone bill was going up so I decided to check it out. I was being charged 19.99 twice a month from a company called "mblox" on my bill under the description "game cheats". I had a total of 230$ in these charges over a five month period. I contacted AT&T about this and they did issue a credit for these charges and put a purchase blocker on my phone. They were very helpful on this occasion. Guess I will have to check my bill closer every month, this is very frustrating especially since I have been a customer for over 10 years.
  • Sprint RIps You Off
We have been a repeated victim of these so called "third party charges" from Sprint. They refused to tell us how we supposedly "signed up" for a $9.99 a month premium service. Finally they agreed to disable internet access on our phones and say this will solve the problem. They would only refund one month of these charges though, leaving us out about $30 from previous months before we got this issue resolved. How is this legal?
  • Ripoff charges
I recently had one of these scam charges appear on my Verizon bill. I called Verizon, and they disabled "all premium texting content" and said we could not be hit with 3rd party billings like this again. Let's hope so. In the meantime, looks like we fell victim to a Facebook scam.
  • Verizon 3rd party charges
My children downloaded games - $700 worth over a 3 day period. I am not justifying what they did, but they are minors (age 10).I received my bill and immediatley called VERIZON. I was explained about 3rd party billing and they couldn't do anything but credit for the megabytes ($180), thankful for that, but these charges were incurred over a 3 day span. I have been a long time VERIZON customer 10+ years, landline,tv and internet . I am ready to jump ship on everything verizon. Do I have any recourse ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  • Verizon rip-off
I have $9.00 extra in "data charges" each month for downloads I have never requested or even had access to. Several months ago I requested and supposedly had all download features blocked by a Verizon representative. I am continually charge, but for what I don't know. I visited a Verizon store and they told me the only way to stop it was to switch my number. In a round-a-bout way, the representative informed me that it must be my fault because these authorizations are very complex. He told me that I must have responded twice (back, forth, and back again) with this unknown third-party biller and authorized it myself. I have news for them, they will lose my business, too. What can be done about this? My next call is to the Attorney General.
  • Scam on Qwest home phone bill
I listen to Clark on KPAM Portland OR. I feel it is my civic duty as a consumer to say that on our Qwest phone bill here in Portland OR has been over charged for several month with a fishing scam that originated on the internet. My wife evidently visited a music site ez-track.com and clicked on a "get $1,000 in coupons" or something of the sort (button). A form popped up for her to get the coupons was a long contract that most people do not bother to read because you have to scroll down the 6-7 pages of terms and conditions. Click on "I agree or consent". But what she did not have time to read in the mouse type was. (I agree to activate a 1800 number of which family and friends could call to leave a message). And the company has a right to charge $13.99/ month added to the phone bill. We don't always read the phone bill, just pay it. And I reviewed it and was surprised to see this on page four. Called Qwest and they were allowed to credit back 3 of the 6 months charges. However the customer service said that the law allows companies to charge your phone bill if they say that you've activated a service. I just think that folks should be aware that long contacts and an "I agree" with the terms and conditions on the internet is really an unfair practice for those seeking to receive coupons.
  • metro pcs issues
if any of your customers are having customer service issues with metro pcs
please have them call or talk only to the immokalee road store we give the best cust service. they are a metro owned and operated corporate store.. the cust below can call me and i will take another look at his phone, all mpcs phones have a 1 year manufactures warranty and as long as the phone was not wet or abused we exchange it for 10 bucks.. so something in his story does not add up
  • metro pcs NO RIP OFF
i know metro pcs only usses refurbished phones for in warranty exchanges only.. if you buy a PHONE it is a new one
never ever do they sell refurbs
  • sprint rip- off
I have sprint and for the past few months my bill is always higher than what it should be. They try to charge me overage all the time. One month I had 1000 min plan and I jused only 660 so they charged me overage for 110 min how does that math works I don't know, but I try to call them about refunding me that money ,they said, if is over 60 day they can't do it. Last month they had to refund me $45 and this month $98. Advice for everboby who is with SPRINT go trough your minutes every month, beacuse they try to over charge me every month for at least $30-40.
  • Thumbplay rip-off
I noticed that my Alltel August bill was higher than expected. I found a charge of $9.99 for a compmany called Thumbplay. I then remembered that I had received a text message for a free ringtone. I selected the free ringtone, but was not able to download it. I did not sign up for a subscription or purchase anything. Then I got the bill - passed to me from Thumbplay through Alltel! I talked with two different people at Alltel. They said they would credit my account with the next billing cycle. Alltel lied. My next bill had no credit. I talked with another no-customer rep at Alltel who also told me he would credit my next bill. I told him that was not acceptable and demanded that he credit my account now or send me a check to my home address. He told me he would not do either and that it was Alltel's policy to credit on the next bill. I reminded him that Alltel had lied to me once and that I could not trust them. He still refused to do anything to satisfy my claim - he even said that I was probably responsible for the charge anyway! I will never do business with Alltel again!
  • New behavior with pay-as-you-go cell phone
My husband and I have pay-as-you-go cell phones, and over the past few months we've noticed that we are occassionally being charged for calls that are not picked up on the other end. The scenario is this: I dial a number, hear it ring, and then hang up before (or just after) the answering machine/voicemail answers. Up until a few months ago, I could hang up the moment I heard the automated voice speak and not be charged. Now I can hang up when I still hear ringing, and I'm being charged occasionally. The obvious explanation is that the other end picks up and the charge is incurred before I actually hear the call complete, which I think is a little under-handed.
  • Are these things saving time...or not?
Ive decided I don't have time for a cell phone and all their time wasting non service. I have my company cell phone if an emergency occurs but other than that...I will talk at home on my good old fashion phone. And the big 3 can keep their raggedy phones & their even raggedier service.
  • CHEAP CELL PHONES
FOUR MONTHS AGO I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW PHONE FROM METROPCS. I CAN ONLY ASSUME IT WAS NEW AND NOT REFURBISHED. I HAVE A SNEAKY SUSPICION THAT THEY ARE SELLING REFURBISHED PHONES AS NEW. ANYWAY, I PURCHASED THEIR "SLIDE PHONE" THAT HAS A RATHER LARGE SCREEN WITH A LIGHT. NOT ONLY IS IT A SLIDE PHONE, BUT IT TAKES PICS AS WELL. I HAVE NEVER DROPPED THIS PHONE NOR HAS IT BEEN IN WATER, YET MY SCREEN HAS GONE BLACK AND I CAN'T SEE WHO'S CALLING ME OR GET TO MY PHONE BOOK. I TRIED CALLING CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE ONLY THING THEY WANT TO KNOW IS IF I HAVE INSURANCE. WHEN I TOLD THEM I DON'T EVEN RECALL BEING OFFERED INSURANCE THEY GIRL STATES THAT THERE’S NOTHING SHE CAN DO FOR ME. I FLIPPED OUT ON THE PHONE AND DECIDED TO SEND A LETTER TO METRO'S CORPORATE OFFICE. I ALSO SENT A COPY TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND CHANNEL 7 NEWS “ON YOUR SIDE”. APPARENTLY, THIS IS A COMMON THING WITH METROPCS, BECAUSE SO FAR I HAVE HEARD LOTS OF HORROR STORIES REGARDING OTHER PEOPLE’S PHONE PURCHASES.

IS THERE ANY INFORMATION OUT THERE THAT SOMEONE CAN SHARE WITH ME REGARDING METROPCS THAT WILL HELP ME GET MY PHONE FIXED FASTER. RIGHT NOW I AM ANGERY AND CONTEMPLATING TAKING METRO PCS TO COURT.
  • Phone company ripoffs
How can we stop AT&T and other phone companies from allowing this practice?
  • cell phone directory assistance
In the last 3-4 months the directory service Alltel provides has really deteriorated - the operators cannot spell, usually give out the wrong information no matter if you patiently spell the information, and lately sound as if they are in a large holding pen with a huge amount of background noise - are others noticing and complaining? I agree - it's not a service you want to request frequently, but when you need it, it should be a good service
  • Cell Phone companies and 3rd party billing
You are so right! It is difficult- if not impossible- to get the charges removed. I went back and forth w/Verizon about a bogus charge for a $10 text message from an outside company. The first month it was "Okay I just removed it."
The 2nd month I called again because the charge was still there-
"Sorry we can't remove it because it really isn't ours. Call the number on the bill and speak to them directly."
I did of course, and after an argument they said they would remove it.
The 3rd month I called Verizon again as the charge was still there. "Oh, no we can't remove it."
"But you have to because I will not pay it- he doesn't have that service, never had that service, etc."
"No sorry we can't do it."
I didn't back down and kept insisting that they remove it but they were equally insistent that they couldn't. I went back and forth with him until I finally realized that our contract had expired a while ago. (Yippee- leverage!)So I told the Verizon guy that I would cancel my cell phones- all of them, the whole account- just to get rid of this problem! All of a sudden he paid attention.
"What?? Oh no, you don't want to do that."
"Oh but I DO- and right now too."
"NO, no- all you have to do is send this exact text message UNSUBSCRIBE/STOP/CANCEL to that number and they will cancel the charge and then they will text back and tell you that it is canceled and it will be done."
"Really?? You mean after 3 months of this ridiculousness you mean it will really be over?"
    "Yes Ma'am."
"Gee, why didn't someone mention this to me 2 months ago!!"
    Dead silence on Verizon's end.
Well happy to say that his advice did work and worked immediately. But, it's too bad I had to threaten to cancel with them to get some action on the problem. I am not renewing my contract with them any time soon. I am still pretty angry about the whole thing. I thought Verizon was reputable but now I know that when it comes to stuff like this, none of them are.
